About the Good Morning Snore Solution

How Does The GMSS Work?

Closeup Blue Good Morning Snore Solution on a white backgroundWhile Mandibular Advancement Devices currently dominate the anti-snoring device market, a newer type of product classified as a Tongue Stabilizing Device or TSD is beginning to consume an increasingly large portion of the market share. One such device is the Good Morning Snore Solution. Like other TSD’s, this one works by using a suction bulb to pull the tip of the tongue forward where it remains while you sleep. The theory is that the tongue actually relaxes while sleeping, creating a blockage in the airway and causing snoring. Like the MAD, this device is also effectively treats snoring. The company even goes as far as saying that it is effective at treating mild to moderate sleep apnea in some cases.

A One Size Fits All Solution

Blue GMSS contained within plastic retail packaging One of the greatest advantages of this product is the fact that it is ready to use out of the box. Other oral appliances require that you boil and bite the mouthpiece to fit or make complicated adjustments. The GMSS is a one size fits all solution that will work in just about any circumstance. It simply rests between your gums and inner lip. The suction bulb grabs and holds the tongue forward, preventing it from moving back. There is no need to mold, trim or adjust it.

Will It Work? – A Simple Test

Looking at this simple device, it’s quite difficult to imagine how the GMSS can prevent snoring.

Fortunately, there’s a very easy in-home test that you can perform to determine if it will work for you. Performing this test only takes a few seconds and will help you to better understand if a TSD, such as the Good Morning Snore Solution, is a good fit for you. There are three simple steps:

  1. Take a look around to ensure nobody is watching you. This is very important. 🙂
  2. Pretend as if you are sleeping and emulate the sound of snoring.
  3. Now, stop for a second and stick your tongue out through your teeth and resume the sound of snoring.

Stick out your tongue and try to emulate the sound of snoring

Did you notice a difference between the snoring sound with your tongue inside versus your tongue outside of your mouth? I just tried it and found that while it was easy to generate snoring sounds at first, it was very difficult to recreate the snoring sound with my tongue out. While this experiment is rather unscientific, it should give you an idea of whether or not the GMSS will work for you.

Why does holding your tongue forward prevent snoring? The sound of snoring most often originates in the airway. Airway tissue becomes loose and flap against each other, generating this sound. When the tongue is held forward, the tissue surrounding the airway tightens and prevents airway tissues from flapping around.

TSDs such as the GMSS is a simple snoring solution that has been clinically proven to work in several studies.

Who’s Behind The GMSS?

Canadian dentist Dr. Nancy Markley on white background

Dr. Nancy Markley, Founder of MPowRx

The GMSS was developed by Dr. Leslie Dort who currently practices dentistry in Calgary Canada. Once created, she conducted clinical studies on this device to verify its effectiveness. The results indicated a clinically significant reduction in sleep disturbances.

In 2007, Dr. Dort teamed up with another Calgary dentist, Dr. Nancy Markley who created the company Mpowrx to market and sell the GMSS. What started off as a small startup,  now has a far global reach with multiple distribution centers in operation worldwide.

Is The Company Trustworthy?

Better Business Bureau accredited business logo As you may already know, one of the easiest way to check the trustworthiness of a company is to visit the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and search for the company that you are interested in.

For well over 100 years, the BBB has been helping consumers in North America locate businesses, brands, and charities they can trust. They are a non-profit association who provides unbiased information to consumers and also serve as an intermediary between businesses and customers, helping to settle thousands of disputes annually.

A business must meet certain criteria in order to become BBB accredited. In addition, they must pay a minimum of $623 per year to maintain their accreditation. Larger companies often pay over $16,000 a year in BBB accreditation fees.  Most companies that are serious about their business seek BBB accreditation.

According to the BBB, the Good Morning Snore Solution is sold by Mpowrx Health & Wellness Products 2012 Inc who is based out of Calgary, AB. Records show that they have been in business since June 2007 and became accredited in March 2012.

At the time of this writing, they are maintaining an A+ rating with a few minor complaints, mostly concerning return shipping. All complaints have been quickly addressed by the company and there are currently no open cases.

Being an accredited member of the BBB and maintaining an A+ rating with no open cases is a strong indicator that Mpowrx is a trustworthy company that takes their customers and business seriously.

Does the GMSS contain BPA?

Illustration of person holding up No BPA sign What is Bisphenol A (BPA) and why should you be concerned if your mouthpiece contains this chemical? Also, does the Good Morning Snore Solution contain BPA? Let’s start by answering the first question.

BPA is a synthetic compound that has been around for well over 100 years, however, it has been used commercially for only the past 60 years. It is typically used by manufacturers to produce everything from plastic water bottles to sports equipment. It’s found in nearly everything, including your home water supply lines, aluminum can liners, and yes, even in some snoring mouthpieces. In fact, BPA is so common, over 10 billion pounds are produced annually for manufacturing purposes.

While still currently legal to use in the US (with the exception of baby bottles), BPA is continuously scrutinized by regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration as well as the European Food Safety Authority because of increasing evidence linking the chemical to health problems. Although the jury is still out, several studies suggest that BPA may cause endocrine system disruptions, especially at higher levels of exposure.

Oral appliances are placed inside the mouth for several hours each night and if they contain BPA, this chemical may leach into your body. While it’s still debatable whether or not BPA exposure is hazardous to one’s health, it’s best to err on the side of caution and choose a mouthpiece that does not contain BPA.

Both the manufacturer’s website and their product packaging state that the GMSS is BPA free. This is a claim that is made by only a handful of companies who manufacturer mouthpieces, GMSS being one of them. Industrywide, there seems to be a relationship between trustworthy companies who receive clearance through regulatory agencies such as the FDA and the use of BPA free material in their product. Generally speaking, most FDA cleared oral appliances are labeled as BPA free.

Does The Good Morning Snore Solution Contain Latex?

No Latex sign shows balloons with the word latex and a red line passing through Did you know that approximately 1%-2% of the general population has a latex allergy? Health care workers and individuals with conditions such as spina bifida who have undergone multiple surgeries are at greater risk of developing a latex allergy.

Symptoms of an allergy to latex typically begin within minutes of exposure and often include a runny or stuffy nose, hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing and tightness in the chest.

While most who are reading this review probably do not have a known allergy to latex, repeated exposure to latex products can lead to a latex allergy. The Department of Labor estimates that between 8%-12% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex due to constant exposure from wearing latex gloves.

For this reason, if you are going to use a tongue stabilizing device on a daily basis for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to choose a product that does not contain Latex.

This leads us to the question – “Does the Good Morning Snore Solution contain latex?”.

Looking at the manufacturer’s sales page and frequently asked question section, I was unable to immediately locate the answer to this question. After doing some further searching on their website, I found a statement within a blog post that was published in February of 2016 that answers this question. The statement reads that the GMSS “utilizes a latex-free medical grade resin”. So, to answer this question, no the GMSS does not contain latex.

Where Is The GMSS Made?

Two circles, one with the Canadian Flag one with USA Flag indicating made in USA & Canada As a consumer, I’m usually interested in the country in which my goods are made. This is especially true if the item that I’m purchasing will be used for health or personal use.  All too often we hear about toxic imported goods making their way into the hands of unsuspecting consumers.

Depending on where a product is produced, there may be little to no government oversight which sometimes leads to questionable manufacturing practices to reduce costs. For this reason, it’s a good idea to choose personal items, such as snoring mouthguards, that are manufactured in developed countries.

According to the manufacturer’s website, the GMSS is produced in the USA and Canada, two countries with strict government controls on manufacturing.

How Long Will It Last?

Spiraling clock demonstrating passage of time The GMSS is made from a medical grade silicone material that’s fairly durable and resistant to wear. How long it lasts really depends on the individual patient and how well it’s cared for.

The manufacturer suggests that the average lifespan is somewhere around 12 months. A person who properly cares for their device and does not chew on it while sleeping should expect it to last for a longer period of time.

2016 UPDATE: I’ve owned my GMSS for just under three years now and while my original GMSS is showing signs of wear, it’s still functional!  I actually upgraded my old clear GMSS to the new “refreshing blue” a few weeks ago. I still keep my original device as a backup and now use the blue one as my primary TSD.

Can the GMSS Be Used To Treat Sleep Apnea?

One question that I often receive from my readers is whether or not TSDs such as the Good Morning Snore Solution can be used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. This question is a bit complicated, primarily because the answer will vary depending on your geographical location.

Technically speaking, TSDs are considered medical devices and most countries have an agency that oversees the sale of such medical devices. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the regulatory agency.

Drawing of an airway that's blocked by the back of the tongue, causing Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by a blocked airway

Health Canada, Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and the European Commission are the medical device regulatory agencies for Canada, Australia, and the European Union respectively.

Each government agency uses its own method to classify medical devices and they set certain guidelines for the sale of each device to their citizens.

Good Morning Snore Solution is considered a Class I medical device and is available for the treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring in the following locations:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • European Union

As for the United States, the GMSS is technically considered a class II medical device and is only approved for the treatment of mild to moderate snoring and is not currently approved for the treatment of sleep apnea.

While most countries’ regulatory agencies allow the GMSS to be marketed for both snoring and sleep apnea, Mpowrx is unable to market it in the United States as a treatment for sleep apnea, simply because of different restrictions imposed by the FDA. So, while the exact same product is being sold in every country, the local government ultimately has a say in how it can be used.

Regardless of how your government classifies the GMSS, it’s always advisable to first speak with a qualified medical provider who can assess your situation, offer a proper diagnosis and explore all treatment options.

FDA Clearance

FDA Cleared 510k logo silver and blueAs mentioned, the GMSS is a class II medical device which requires clearance from the FDA prior to being sold.

According to the FDA database, Dr. Markley submitted a 510(k) summary (K081965) to the FDA in mid-2008.  By October 2008, the FDA had made a substantially equivalent determination, granting Mpowrx permission to market this device in the United States for mild to moderate snoring. At the time of this writing, the FDA website indicates that the company’s status as “Active”.

So it has been cleared by the FDA but what exactly does this mean? Here’s what the FDA has to say about cleared medical devices:

“These medical devices are ones that FDA has determined to be substantially equivalent to another legally marketed device. A premarket notification, referred to as a 510(k), must be submitted to FDA for clearance. A 510(k) is most often submitted by the medical device manufacturer.”

In other words, the FDA has determined that the GMSS is equivalent to a similar product that was previously cleared by the FDA. This gives the company the green light to bring their product to market.

Note, “FDA Cleared” should not be confused with “FDA Approved” which is typically reserved for high-risk medical devices and requires a more in-depth review process.

Does the GMSS Require A Prescription To Purchase?

Blank prescription pad with pen laying on top Depending upon where you live, a prescription may be required before purchasing the GMSS. While some countries have tighter restrictions on anti-snoring and sleep apnea products, such as MAD’s and TSD’s, others will allow you to purchase such devices off the shelf with no questions asked.

While considered a class I medical device in most countries,  the GMSS is considered a class II medical device in the United States. According to the FDA, Mandibular Advancement or Tongue Stabilizing devices such as the GMSS have greater regulatory controls to ensure safety and actually require a prescription from a medical doctor.

Luckily, obtaining a prescription from an MD may be easier than you think and doesn’t necessarily require that you to even leave your home. How is this possible? Allow me to explain.

Most (reputable) companies that sell snoring mouthpieces online are able to help you legally obtain a prescription at home, from behind your computer. Does this sound like a hassle? Actually, it’s really easy and takes about 3 minutes or less to complete. Here’s how it works:

Before being able to finalize your purchase, you are asked to complete a short online sleep health history questionnaire in which a series of health-related questions are presented. Once complete, your answers are carefully examined and a determination is made. If it’s determined that you are a good candidate for a TSD, a script will immediately be written and you will then be able to finalize your purchase of the GMSS. So, it’s as simple as correctly answering a dozen or so “yes” or “no” qualifying questions before being able to move forward with the checkout process.

Color Availability

Blue GMSS with white backgroundWhen the GMSS first came out, it was only available in clear. In late 2015 the company announced that they would be offering the GMSS in “refreshing blue” which is semi-transparent blue in color. The actual design has remained exactly the same, only a blue colorant has been added to the device.

As for availability, the manufacturer’s website states that the refreshing blue mouthpiece is currently only available for sale in the United States and Canada. Those in all other countries will receive the clear GMSS. In all likelihood, it will eventually make its way into other countries.

In Which Countries Can It Be Purchased?

Photo of globe demonstrating worldwideThe GMSS is sold in dozens of countries worldwide.

The company has established a global distribution network in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and Brazil to reach their customers quickly and efficiently. While this may sound like an excessive amount of money for such a simple device, it’s important to consider that a lot of money and effort goes into developing and marketing a clinically proven, FDA, ARTG, and EC cleared prescription product.

Single Vs Double Pack

When ordering the GMSS, you may choose either the single mouthpiece for $89.94 or the double pack for $129.94

There is about a 25% savings per mouthpiece when your order the double pack. For the bargain shopper, the double pack is a great choice.

But what will I do with two mouthpieces? Aside from saving a significant amount of money, here are a few reasons why one may choose the double pack instead of the single:

  • Use one, give the other away to your bedroom partner who also snores.
  • Use one, give the other away as a gift to a fellow snorer.
  • Use the extra one as a backup just in case yours becomes damaged or lost.
  • Use one, keep the other in your vehicle for overnight stays.
  • Use one and keep one to use when the first wears out. The manufacturer suggests replacing the GMSS every 12 months, although I’ve found that it tends to last much longer than this.

No Risk Return Policy And 30-Day Guarantee

100% satisfaction guarantee badge gold with black and white lettering The GMSS is offered with a 30-day Guarantee where you are able to test their product to see if it works for you. According to the company’s policy, you can return the GMSS within 30 days for a full refund of the purchase price if you are not satisfied. The return process seems very straightforward and is listed on their website.

  1. Email the company with your invoice number and reason for returning.
  2. After a customer service representative reviews your return request, you will be issued a Return Authorization (RA) number.
  3. Return the GMSS to the company along with your RA number.
  4. Once received, you will be issued a refund for the entire purchase price, not including shipping charge.

They state that you must return it in its original package.

This no-risk return policy makes it a lot easier if you are on the fence and can’t decide if this product is right for you.

What Are The Actual Customers Saying?

Thumbs up thumbs down customer reviewA quick look at the reviews from those who have tried this product shows that it is quite effective at treating snoring and is a great alternative to bulky mouthpieces that take up a lot of room in the mouth. Until recently, the MAD was the industry standard and there are many cases where people tried several different devices with failure before discovering the GMSS.  While it’s not the most fashionable solution, it delivers as promised and helps to control snoring.  Several reviewers have been using this TSD for over a year now without the need for replacement. The manufacturer does, however, suggest replacement every 12 months or so.

Quite a few denture wearers report having ordered this mouthpiece and had great results. It is one of the few stop snoring devices that can be used by those who wear dentures.

Others have found success in preventing teeth grinding while preventing snoring. Teeth grinding is nearly impossible since this product does not allow you to close your mouth all the way.

On the downside, several people reported tongue soreness and a bit of drooling the first few nights of use but this went away in almost every case. One reviewer claimed that he couldn’t keep the suction bulb stuck to his tongue the entire night.

Here are a couple reviews from actual customers:

Sources: Yelp CPAP talk

“I was extremely sceptical about the ability of this device to reduce snoring, but it’s worked for me. It took about 2 weeks to get used to it. I would put it in for a couple of hours and then take it out, increasing the time every night.” -Diana M

“I really prefer the Good Morning Snore Solution. It’s smaller, only encases the very tip of the tongue and completely prevents mouth breathing. Totally stops snores, too. Plus you cant grind your teeth when wearing it! And zero dry mouth! ” -Babytalk

My Personal Experience With The GMSS

How Do I Measure Effectiveness?

When testing out a new snoring mouthpiece, I typically spend two weeks or more using the product to ensure long-term comfort and effectiveness. There are three indicators that I use to assess the effectiveness of a mouthpiece:

  1. How I feel in the morning
  2. My bed partner’s observation of my snoring
  3. Smartphone sound recording app

Man waking up refreshed. Sitting on edge of bed stretching arms out.

The first consideration, how I feel in the morning, is perhaps the most tell-tale indicator of whether or not a mouthpiece is effective. First, it’s necessary to understand that both snoring and sleep apnea are caused by a narrowed airway. The airway can become restricted, tissues flap against each other (snoring) and in some cases the airway will completely collapse, resulting in apnea. In the event that the airway collapses, your body will instinctively cause you to awaken in order to capture your breath. A sleep-awake cycle occurs all throughout the night and you are usually completely unaware of what is going on. In many cases, the individual will wake up over a dozen times each hour throughout the night and not even know that this is occurring. For this reason, you may wake up feeling tired, even if you sleep for 8, 9, or even 10 hours.

The second way that I determine effectiveness is what I like to call “the wife test”. While I’m a heavy snorer, my wife also occasionally snores. Fortunately for me, I almost always fall asleep first and as a heavy sleeper, my wife’s snoring rarely bothers me. While great news for me, she is often forced to lay awake for several minutes or sometimes hours each night nudging me, trying to stop my snoring. Trust me, if a mouthpiece that I try is not effective, my wife will be the first one to tell me all about it in the morning.

Finally, the third way that I am able to tell if I am snoring is by simply setting up a sound recorder. There are numerous smartphone sound recording apps to choose from, some are even made specifically for capturing and evaluating the sound of snoring. For me, I use a simple free sound recording app.  While I’m sure that other apps offer more bells and whistles, I try to keep things simple, as this has always worked well for me. I use an app that allows me to adjust the microphone sensitivity so that it doesn’t pick up sound from my wife. Also, the app that I use only records when sound is present and remains off when silent. This is helpful because I usually only have to listen to a few minutes of the recording instead of 8 hours.

Before going to bed, I start the recording and then lay the phone next to my pillow on the opposite side that my wife sleeps on. Upon rising in the morning, I play back the recording and listen to see just how bad my snoring was. If I wake up and there are 6 hours of recorded sound, I’m immediately able to tell that the device is not working.

The Arrival

When I first saw this anti-snoring device it seemed a bit strange and I admit that I was a bit skeptical. After all, this thing resembles a pacifier and I really didn’t understand exactly how it worked. So, I ordered one and didn’t know what to expect.

After answering a few “yes” or “no” questions, my order was approved and it shipped the next day with tracking information. While the company is based out of Canada, I found out that they actually have a fulfillment center in the US. Four days after placing my order, it arrived at my doorstep. This was a relief as receiving a package from outside of the US can sometimes take weeks if held up in customs.

The GMSS arrived neatly contained inside of a plastic clamshell package. Inside, there was one device, the instructions, and a Polident denture tablet which I used to clean the GMSS before use. The instructions were straightforward and took just a couple of minutes to read over.

Since it requires no fitting or trimming, it was ready to use straight out of the box. I dropped a tablet into a cup of cold water and then submerged the device for 10 minutes before allowing it to dry on a paper towel for several hours before putting it to use.

Putting The GMSS To The Test

Blue Good Morning Snore on black background

My Good Morning Snore Solution

Before going to bed I simply squeezed the bulb, stuck out my tongue, and let the suction naturally pull my tongue in. For the first night, I let out as much air as possible to ensure that it didn’t fall off of my tongue.

The next morning I woke up and felt refreshed and well rested. I know from past experiences that this was a good indication that the device had worked. The GMSS was still well stuck to the end of my tongue and I had to squeeze and maneuver it off.  I felt a bit of soreness after removing it, but this eventually dissipated after about 30 minutes.

I took a look at my phone and saw 45 minutes of sound was recorded from overnight. While I waited for my wife to wake up, I listened to the recording and was surprised to hear that not a single snoring sound exited my mouth. The captured recording was simply the sound of me breathing into the microphone at 4:00 am when I must have rolled over and my face landed right on top of my phone.  My breathing sounded very smooth both inhaling and exhaling. No snoring, pauses, or throat clearing sound.

Later, when my wife woke up, I learned that she stayed awake reading for 2 hours after I had fallen asleep and didn’t hear a sound. This was very encouraging to hear and I was now excited to continue using it for the next two weeks.

The second night I followed the same procedure except I increased the sound recording sensitivity to ensure that I wasn’t missing anything. With the GMSS in use and the recording on, I quickly fell asleep.

Upon rising the next day, I felt great once again, the only audio that I captured was 1.5 hours of the sound of smooth breathing and once again it had passed the wife test. Unfortunately, I had once again experienced some soreness for the first few minutes of the day.

While it was working well, my only complaint was that it made the tip of my tongue sore in the morning. I had checked the company’s website and they suggested not squeezing all of the air out which reduces the suction and should relieve some of the tongue tenderness.

Before going to bed for the third night, I had followed this advice.

I woke up for the third morning feeling well rested and had experienced another soundless night. The GMSS was still secured to my tongue, however, this time I did not experience the soreness that I had experienced the first two night. Great, the suggestion had worked! I simply had it too tight on the tip of my tongue.

After the third night, everything was smooth sailing. The device continued to work night after night for the next eleven days and the tenderness on the tip of my tongue had never returned.

Using it had quickly become routine and easy to keep up with. I simply placed the unit on the end of my tongue before going to bed, removed and cleaned it in the morning and allowed it to air dry.  I had really grown to like the fact that it’s so compact yet still extremely effective.

In the end, I was no longer a skeptic but rather a believer. Although completely different than any other snoring mouthpiece that I had tried in the past, it really does work well! Although it seemed sort of odd at first, I soon became accustomed to wearing it.

2016 UPDATE: After buying my very first snoring mouthpiece, I was simply amazed by how these things worked and wanted to help other snorers. Three years ago I started to test every product that I was able to get my hands on and write an in-depth review.  Since then, I have reviewed over 2 dozen snoring mouthpieces and shared my opinion on each. Over the years, I’ve received multiple emails from people who thanked me for introducing them to the GMSS. Three years and many mouthpieces later, the Good Morning Snore Solution has remained an all-time favorite that I still use today.

Product Recommendation

Three men in suites each holding up the number 10 indicating a perfect 10 score

After learning about the GMSS and then putting it to the test, it’s quite clear that this product is hands-down one of the best snoring mouthpieces on the market.

Having an actual dentist behind it increases credibility and the fact that it is clinically proven, BPA free, latex free, made in the USA and cleared by the FDA shows that the company has gone to great lengths to ensure that you are receiving a safe and reliable product. With so many unregulated and untested snoring mouthpieces making an appearance on the market today, it’s important to consider where your mouthpiece comes from and whether or not it’s safe to use.  There are a disturbing amount of products on the market that are made of questionable materials and have not been tested by a government regulatory agency such as the FDA. No matter which product you choose, always ensure that it has been cleared by the FDA or a similar regulatory agency.

While on the higher end of the price scale, this is something that should be expected with any new and innovative product in the industry. It takes a lot of capital to properly launch a prescription medical device.

Overall, the Good Morning Snore Solution is a less cumbersome alternative to the MAD. Innovative, comfortable and very effective are three words that I would use to describe the GMSS. If not for the higher cost, I would rate this product at five stars.

My experience using the SnoreRx

Animation of person holding magnifying glass over word reviewI recently had a chance to review the new updated SnoreRx.  The redesigned version addresses the issue of being too bulky by reducing the overall size of the mouthpiece, especially in the molar area.

After making improvements to the original design, the manufacturer now claims to be the undisputed best-in-class stop-snoring mouthpiece. Does it really stand up to these claims? I put the new SnoreRx to the test and documented the results along the way.

The initial fitting process

The SnoreRx arrived neatly packed in a small box and came complete with instructions. In order to fit this mouthpiece, you will need the following materials:

  • The device
  • A mug of boiling hot water
  • A mug of cold water
  • Tongs to retrieve your mouthpiece
  • A stopwatch

Here are the steps involved in fitting the device:

  1. Fill a mug with boiling hot water. Carefully drop the device in and allow to rest for 90 seconds.
  2. Remove the SnoreRx using a pair of tongs and give it a quick dip into a mug filled with cold water for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Open wide and place the entire unit into your mouth with the “UPPER” marking facing up. Bite down and hold for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove the mouthguard and immediately drop it into cold water. Leave for 60 seconds.
  5. Remove from cold water and check the fit
  6. Try the device for a night. If snoring sounds continue, adjust the lower tray setting by squeezing the sides and then moving the tray. (See video below.)

I found the fitting process to be rather simple, taking less than 5 minutes total. I was able to achieve a close fit on my first attempt. The instructions state that you can try up to 3 times if you don’t have success the first time. Keep in mind that heating and cooling the device more than 3 times can weaken the material and render it useless.

Immediately after taking the impression I adjusted the setting to 5 mm before trying it out the first night.

How did it work?

Illustration of person question how it workedI’ve been working the overnight shift lately so this gave my wife the perfect opportunity to observe my snoring habits. While asleep she checked in throughout the first night (her day) and did not hear a single sound. Instant success!

Upon rising, I noticed a bit of tenderness in my jaw from being stretched overnight. Before going to bed the following night, I reduced the advancement by 1 mm to 4 mm. This position felt more natural and comfortable. After another night of heavy sleeping, my wife reported absolutely no snoring sounds coming from the bedroom. In the morning my jaw was no longer tender and the snoring was gone.

I decided to test the device for an additional 6 nights and had experienced success night after night. Overall it was incredibly effective and comfortable to wear.

Very few of its kind

Line up of six people one standing out in redThe SnoreRx is a MAD that actually allows advancement adjustment. Most devices move the jaw forward to a position that may or may not be comfortable or effective. This device allows forward adjustments up to 10mm which is nearly 1/2″. The manufacturer recommends that you begin using the device in the 4mm-5mm setting range before making any adjustments for a more comfortable fit.

In addition to the incremental forward adjustments feature, you are also able to create a custom mold that conforms to the shape of your teeth. The SnoreRx offers similar boil-and-bite technology commonly found with other oral appliances. Simply drop the device in boiling water for 60 seconds, remove and cool slightly then take an impression of the teeth by biting down. Have a bowl of ice water handy to drop it in once formed.

The newer SnoreRx features a thin inner frame that is both rigid and durable. The unique frame allows you to make small incremental tray adjustments by “ratcheting” it forward and back.

Longevity is also a selling feature that several companies rarely talk about. This product is created from a medical-grade copolymer, making it both durable and long-lasting. They claim that one should expect it to last anywhere from 12 to 15 months. Several similar products last less than a year and often only 4-6 months. Since some non-prescription MAD’s are relatively expensive, this is an important factor that one should take into consideration.

How much is it?

Price tag under magnifying glassExpect to pay a bit more for a product that offers so many features. The SnoreRx currently retails for $99.00 plus $6.95 for standard United States Postal Service shipping.  The overall cost shipped to your door comes to around $106.00.

FDA cleared, BPA Free

FDA letter with red CLEARED stamped on topOne consideration that should be examined when shopping around for a MAD is whether or not it’s FDA-cleared and BPA-free.

Devices such as the SnoreRx are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as a class II medical device. Prior to selling any such device, a manufacturer is required to obtain this FDA clearance. In doing so, the government is ensuring consumer safety. Keep in mind, that not all products that are being sold in the United States are FDA-cleared.

Also, some mouthpieces (often less expensive) may contain a controversial harmful toxic chemical known as BPA.

The manufacturer of the SnoreRx claims that their product is both FDA-cleared and BPA-free. After checking the FDA database, I was able to confirm that it was cleared in Nov 2011 and is currently registered.

Consumer feedback

Hand drawing the word Feedback with blue marker An overwhelming majority of people who have tried this product agree that it is comfortable and easy to use. Most experience immediate results and are happy with their purchase.

On the other hand, there are some complaints that have also surfaced online. The most common complaint has to do with shipping and billing. In older online reviews predating 2015, some individuals with smaller mouths found it to be too large and difficult to keep in their mouth overnight although this complaint seems to have been resolved with the latest updated version that was released in 2015. Others have reported oral discomfort for the first 2-5 days of use. This is typical of most devices and should eventually disappear.

Should I buy SnoreRx or try something else?

Green Check MarkThere is no doubt that this stop snoring device is well designed and functional but does this mean you should hand over the $106.00 and give it a try?

The SnoreRx is one of the few MAD’s available without a prescription which allows you to adjust the position of your lower jaw. This combined with the custom boil and bite feature allows for a better fit when compared to other products on the market. Its design mimics oral appliances that are available from a dentist with a prescription. Most MAD’s that are prescribed are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea and should not be confused with this product and other OTC stops snoring products.

As for the inventor and his credentials, there is very little information available. There are however several medical professionals who support this product which gives it credibility.

According to the companies website, the SnoreRx is endorsed by Dr. Robert Lebby of Laguna Beach, CA who is board certified in sleep medicine. Dr. Lebby is quoted saying the following:

“Intraoral appliances, or mouthguards, that can be micro calibrated to the needs of the patient have a proven history of effectiveness for treating snoring and sleep apnea.”

The SnoreRx is also endorsed by Dr. Robert  L. Mandell a periodontist  in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts who is quoted saying:

“The patented Micro-Fit feature allows for a custom precise fit in 1mm increments to meet the needs of the individual patient. Only SnoreRx offers this critical patented feature. I would never prescribe an oral appliance that did not offer this.”

The price appears to be fair considering the complexity of its construction and its ability to last for a long time in comparison to other MAD’s that are available.

I was very impressed with the quality and the ease of use. It’s the only custom-molded MAD on the market that can be adjusted over and over with no tools required. It’s well constructed and should easily last 12-15 months as recommended by the manufacturer.

After closely examining the SnoreRx myself and then comparing this information to what actual customers are saying, The SnoreRx receives my approval on the basis of comfort, adjustability, and durability.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • One of the only adjustable MAD’s available online
  • Can adjust in 1 mm increments up to 10 mm
  • Large breather hole at the front
  • Newly redesigned and thinner than previous model
  • Endorsed by medical professionals
  • FDA cleared & BPA free
  • 12-15 month lifespan
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • May cause jaw tenderness at first

Product features and claims

zQuiet in two sizes with storage case ZQuiet is a Mandibular Advancement Device that is constructed of a soft rubber-like material. It is used to hold the lower jaw forward in order to widen the airway, allowing air to move freely and prevent a restriction in flow. The actual material used in the construction is a thermoplastic elastomer which contains no BPA’s nor latex.  It functions similarly to other MAD devices on the market with the exception of the fact that it is hinged at the jaw (named “living hinge” technology by the manufacturer). This allows free movement of the mouth, allowing you to speak and even enables you to take a sip of water without removing the device. This open design is essential for those who breathe through their mouth while sleeping.

According to the manufacturer, this device is expected to last for several months when used on a regular basis.

This MAD can be used right out of the box although some customization may be required in order to achieve optimal performance.

The zQuiet is offered on a 30-day trial basis, meaning that if you can give it a try before committing to the full asking price.

The trial cost is $19.90, which includes shipping and processing.

Meet the creators

In 2008, couple Dan and Katrina Webster developed the ZQuiet snoring mouthpiece in order to solve a common problem that they both shared – snoring.

Their company, Sleep Well LLC was registered with the state of Vermont in 2008. In order to gain some credibility, they recruited Avery Lieberman, DDS who for more than 20 years has worked in the sleep medicine field. While in practice, his focus was on sleep apnea, snoring and oral appliances. Lieberman helped Dan and Katrina to develop the ZQuiet.

My Experience using the ZQuiet

In the past, I have tried out several boil and bite mouthguard type devices in an attempt to treat my snoring. While just about every product that I have tried did in fact work, I was excited to try out the ZQuiet because it appeared to be much thinner than your typical self-fitted boil and bite mouthguard. I placed an order on their website and received my package in the mail containing my new device. From the time that I ordered it until it arrived in the mail took about 3 days, so it was reasonably fast.

As I unpacked it the first thing that I noticed was that as suspected, it was in fact much thinner and more compact in comparison to the traditional thicker mouthguard style devices that I have tried in the past. After glancing over the instructions I gave it a quick bath using dish soap and warm tap water. The warm water seemed to relax the spring action of the hinges a bit and gave it a softer feel.

I popped the device into my mouth and it seemed to fit naturally and was quite comfortable. The instructions do say that you can use a small pair of scissors to trim any extra material if needed but this was not necessary for me. I left it in for a few minutes to get a feel for it and started to notice drool coming out of the side of my mouth. Having used a mouthpiece before, I understood that this usually happened whenever introducing a new device into your mouth.

Night one

Illustration of man snoring and woman covering earsBefore going to bed I placed the ZQuiet into my mouth and laid down. The familiar feeling of salivation began but soon stopped after leaving it in for a few minutes. After getting over the excessive salivation it was nearly effortless to wear. I was able to close my mouth almost all the way with the exception of a couple of millimeters due to the airflow posts. The overall thickness was much less distracting in comparison to other thicker units that I have tried.

Now it was time for the trial with my wife being the judge. She’s a night owl and typically stays up a couple hours past my bedtime. By the time that she’s ready to go to bed, I am usually snoring like a freight train. She listened as I fell asleep and… guess what? This small device seemed to have alleviated my snoring.

The next morning I woke up and removed the device from my mouth. My lower jaw had an undeniable sore feeling as if it were held forward for the entire night. In reality, that’s exactly what all mandibular advancement device do. They hold the lower jaw forward which tightens the muscles in your throat and keeps the airway clear. I knew from past experience that this feeling usually goes away.

In the morning I gave my mouthpiece a rubdown with dish soap and then rinsed it off with warm water. The manufacturer suggests that you store it flat in the provided case so this is what I did after allowing it to dry.

Night two

Man laying on pillow sleeping with a smileIt was time for round two and with good results the first night I was excited to replicate my experience. Once again I rinsed it off under warm tap water and then placed it into my mouth before going to bed. This time there was there wasn’t much of a salivation issue so that was good.

Without hesitation, I fell asleep and once again received a positive report from my wife in the morning.

The morning time soreness feeling was still there and lasted a couple hours after removing it.

Twelve more nights of soundless sleep

The word success with arrow pointing upward For the next 12 nights, I used the ZQuiet with fantastic results. After a total of 2 weeks of quiet snoring, I have concluded that it does, in fact, work on a long-term basis. After day 3 or 4 the morning time soreness diminished and eventually became unnoticeable. Also, the drooling problem went away after a couple of night. I slept like a rock and my wife was also satisfied with the results as she was also able to sleep.

Overall my experience was better than average in comparison to other devices that I have tried in the past.

It worked comfortably right out of the box and did not need to be heated in boiling water. The hinged joint was a great feature which made it feel “natural” and allowed me to breathe through my mouth while allowing my jaw to move freely. I really enjoyed the fact that it’s compact and doesn’t make you feel like there is a rubber sanding block in your mouth.

What about user reviews?

Three animated people having a conversationOverall, users who have tried this device have reported positive results. The companies website reports a 94% satisfaction rate. Most say that this device works on the first night. It seems as if the product delivers as promised.

There are of course some side effects that are less commonly reported including drooling, sore jaw, and inability to keep the device in all night. I found a couple of comments from people who said that the device initially fell out when rolling over.  These are common side effects that are not exclusive to the ZQuiet. Side effects such as jaw soreness and excessive drooling typically subside within a couple days to a week.

Comments found online from users

“…But here’s the surprising thing… The bloody thing works. Seriously – it works exactly as advertised.” – Steve Jenkins (stevejenkins.com)

“After all of the different things I have tried, something finally worked and I am definitely going to keep it! So of course I suggest it to anyone who is looking for a solution for snoring and anyone who thinks that nothing will work.” – Monica B (ASOTVS)

“I sometimes snore, and I bought two of those Z quiet things. They work for me, but they seem to cause me to drool excessively and they don’t always stay in my mouth through the night.” – Ray Neman (The Gear Page)

“ZQuiet has worked for me for about a month. This little gem should have been around many years ago. thanks for a fine product.” – Chris Rasmussen  (ZQuiet Facebook)

“Three weeks ago, my husband tried ZQuiet for the first time. It took him 4 nights to get used to the mouthpiece being in his mouth. Finally and reluctantly after a week of him using ZQuiet, I agreed to try sleeping in the same room with him. With much anxiety I fell asleep with him next to me. Unbelievably, we slept all night and I didn’t hear him snore at all. We have been sleeping in the same room every night since.” – Carrie Parker

What do we recommend?

Illustration showing how zQuiet's living hinge technology works

“Living Hinge” makes wearing the ZQuiet more comfortable

With so many antisnoring devices available on the market, it comes down to functionality, unique features, safety, and cost.

From my own findings, I was able to confirm several reports of the ZQuiet working on the first night and every night thereafter. Because there is no initial fitting process required I simply rinsed it off under hot tap water and put it to use immediately. This product did an excellent job of treating my loud snoring that often keeps my wife up at night.

Most traditional boil and bite style oral appliances place your jaw in the forward fixed position, preventing you from speaking or drinking.  The ZQuiet addresses this issue with their “living hinge” technology. The airflow posts prevent the device from completely closing which is an important feature often overlooked by those who have a tendency to breathe through their mouth while sleeping.

Being made from a very soft rubber-like material makes it easy on the gums preventing irritation. Also, there are no sharp edges to poke at the inside of your mouth. It fits comfortably around your teeth and features a compact design that is amazingly effective.

Chart comparing zquiet to other mouthpiecesSafety should be a high priority for anyone shopping for a snoring mouthguard. The manufactures of the ZQuiet have taken all of the necessary steps in order to ensure that their product is safe to use. Being regulated by the FDA and also latex and BPA free gives them a competitive advantage over other products that could be made of questionable materials which may contain harmful toxins. There is an alarming number of mouthguard product being sold that do not meet these requirements.

The total cost comes to around $100 which is the average price one should expect to pay for a quality OTC oral appliance. There are numerous other devices available that sell for nearly half this cost, however, they are almost always your simple boil and bite mouthguard style units which are fairly thick and take up quite a bit of room in your mouth. ZQuiet has covered all of their bases with a unique and safe product that performs well and lives up to its expectations. While you may be thinking “$100 for a simple piece of plastic” the fact that it’s one of a kind, safe and effective makes it worth its weight in gold.

Having all of these features and seeing the ZQuiet in action has convinced me that it is perhaps the best OTC mandibular advancement device on the market today. Considering all factors, the ZQuiet gets my personal recommendation. It is important to keep in mind that your results may vary.

While snoring may be a laughing matter to many, it can really wreak havoc on one’s health and personal relationships with others. It is estimated that 30% to 40% of Americans snore from time to time while the majority of those who snore do so habitually.

So what’s the big deal with frequent snoring? Many would say that the main problem with snoring is that it keeps other awake. Whiles this is true, a more dangerous reason comes down to the health issues that are associated with regular snoring. The act of snoring could stem from a sleep disorder known as sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, an estimated 18 million American adults have sleep apnea which can lead to other problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, or depression.

It is very important to remember that not all who snore have sleep apnea and those with sleep apnea do not always snore. This is why it is advisable to visit your doctor to determine if your snoring is a result of a more serious medical condition. Before visiting, keep a sleep journal noting how often your snoring occurs and under what conditions. Also, document your energy levels throughout the day and other factors such as mood changes. If possible, have partner observe you while sleeping, taking note of pauses in breathing or gasps for air.

There are several factors which increase the likelihood of snoring. Often times, issues can be resolved by taking action to improve your health. Other times, one is genetically predisposed and unable to help their self.

Once you have determined that your snoring is not the result of a more serious medical condition, you may want to give these self-help ideas a try.

Lose weight, feel great

Stop snoring lose weightThere are numerous health benefits associated with losing weight, including a reduction in snoring. Think back to a time when you were a few pounds lighter. Did you snore during this time period? If the answer is yes then your snoring may be due to your current state of being overweight. Keep in mind that age may also be a factor because as we get older, we lose muscle tone in our airways.

Snoring is prevalent in overweight people as fatty tissues build up around the neck, causing a restriction in the airway. As you lose weight, these fatty tissues begin to vanish, opening up the airway that was once obstructed by fat. As a general rule of thumb, women should keep their neck size under 16 ” while men should keep it under 17″.

Lay off the alcohol and sedatives

avoid alcohol snoringIf you enjoy a few alcoholic beverages or take sedatives before going to bed, this may be a cause or be contributing factor to your snoring.  Both are widely known to relax the tongue and muscles in the throat, causing them to become obstructed or even collapse while drawing air in as we sleep. If you drink, ensure that you consume your last beverage 4 to 5 hours prior to going to bed and don’t overdo it. Also, be sure to include food along with your beverage of choice. This can help to lessen the effects of the alcohol. Limit your prescription medications to daytime use if possible.

Change your sleeping position

sleep on side and snoringThe reason why you snore may be as simple as the position in which you sleep. Sleeping on the back sometimes causes the uvula (the soft thing that dangles in the back of your throat) and soft palate to sag down and block your airway. The simple solution: adjust your sleeping position. Sleeping on the side is an easy way to help prevent this from happening.

What if you are accustom to sleeping on your back? Some suggest that taping tennis balls to you pajamas to prevent rollover may be the solution. While many find this uncomfortable, it may be worth a try if have a difficult time staying off your back.

Drink plenty of water

stay hydrated and snoringDoctors have been saying this for years. There are several benefits associated with staying hydrated but how does this help with snoring? Simply stated, mucus in the nose and throat become thick during a period of dehydration. Thick mucus in the throat and nose can stop up the airway, restricting breathing.

The recommended amount of water will vary depending on who you ask. Some say eight 8oz glasses of water per day while other say different.

The Institute of Medicine now recommends that men consumer 125 oz per day while women consume 91 oz. Keep in mind that this includes water in food which accounts for on average 20% of our intake.

Another recommendation is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. For instance, a 256 lb person should drink 128oz of water per day or 1 gallon.

Rethink your pillow

new pillow snoring solutionThe answer to your snoring problem may as simply swapping out your pillow. A pillow that positions your head too high or too low can cause restrictions in your airway. Choose a pillow that allows you to rest comfortably while not placing your neck in an awkward position.

While on the subject of pillows, did you know that allergens and dust mites may contribute to your snoring by causing inflammation? There is a bit of debate when it comes to how often you should swap out your pillows although most experts agree that they should be replaced every 1-2 years. If possible wash and thoroughly dry according to manufactures instructions.

Zyppah Company and Product Information

Zpa, Zpaw, Zeppe, or Zeepa, however, you want to spell it, we are talking about the same product which is the Zyppah. Zyppah is a stop snoring product that is often associated with the somewhat irritating voice of “Jimmy”, who is sure to capture your attention if you happen to listen to Sirus XM radio.

When I was initially introduced to the Zyppah, pronounced “Zee Pah”, the first thing that stood out was its appearance. Unlike the vast majority of snoring mouthpieces on the market, this one was sleek and stylish, sporting eye-catching colors of bright neon green and black. Another unique feature was the tongue stabilizing strap, referred to by the manufacturer as the “Snore Eliminator”.  It is located at the back of the device and stretches horizontally, from one side to the other. The combination of both jaw adjustment and tongue stabilization places this snoring treatment device in a class of its own.

The Zyppah was developed by industry professional Dr. Johnathan Greenburg who spend over three decades in the field of dentistry and also studied bioengineering as an undergraduate student. Dr. Greenburg has spent the past 15 years studying sleep apnea and snoring.

He currently operates five “Snore Experts” centers in southern California located in the cities of Encino, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, Pasadena, and Valencia. These centers focus on snoring, sleep apnea, and CPAP intolerance. Dr. Greenburg operates these clinics with the help of his partners, Dr. Jay Khorsandi, DDS and Dr. Stephanie Colletta, DDS. Together, they treat patients using a variety of different options such as oral appliances, CPAP, APAP, & NightLase.

Portrait of Dr. Jonathan Greenburg white background Zyppah is headed by Dr. Greenburg with Owen Gonzales listed as the Chief Operating Officer and Jerry Washburn as the Cheif Financial Officer. The company has a license agreement with Nevada corporation Always More Marketing, Inc. (headed by Dr. Greenburg). Always More Marketing holds the intellectual rights to this product while Zyppah manufactures, markets, and sells the mouthpiece.

There are currently 2 types of Zyppah devices that are available – the over-the-counter version which can be purchased on the internet. This is used to treat snoring only. Then there are the prescribed versions which are custom fitted by a doctor at one of the 5 Snore Expert centers in CA or by a participating certified practitioner.

Unlike any other oral appliance, Zyppah uses an elastic band in conjunction with a mandibular advancement feature. The jaw advancement helps to tighten tissue and muscles at the rear of the throat while the elastic band works to help prevent the tongue from blocking the air passage while you sleep.

The first thought the likely comes to mind when you see the Zyppah is “this can’t possibly be comfortable to wear”.  As with all anti-snoring device, it will take a few days to get used to. This product has been on market since June 2012 and those who have tried it say that it takes about a week to get used to wearing. Some have reported jaw tenderness during the initial week, which soon diminishes. Once accustom to, most users claim that it has helped their snoring significantly.

One concern for many is the tongue stabilizing strap which could potentially trigger the gag reflex. The manufacturer suggests that there is no need to worry about triggering your gag reflex as the elastic band is positioned in such a way that will not affect most people. In fact, very few complaints of this nature have surfaced since this product was released.

Zyppah in four colors Green & Black, Red, white and blue, pink and white, cammo brown and greenThe original Zyppah is green and black, although the company has sold it in several different patterns and designs throughout the years including:

  • Limited edition pink & white Susan G. Komen was released in 2014 with $5 dollars from every sale going to her organization to help fight breast cancer.
  • Military Zyppah, a Camouflage hunter green and brown mouthpiece, was released in 2016 but is no longer available
  • Zyppah Red, White, & Blue was another special edition that was also released in 2016 and is not currently available.
  • A glow-in-the-dark Zyppah was said to have been released in 2017.

Technology Used to Create Zyppah

Zyppah is made from a commonly found thermoplastic boil-and-bite material which allows you to create a comfortably fitting mouthpiece that contours to the surface of your teeth.

Custom fitting is rather simple and requires that you drop the device into hot water, remove and allow to cool briefly prior to inserting it into your mouth. Once inserted, bite down and hold to form an impression. As the material cools, it will retain its shape.

As for the ability to micro-adjust the lower tray, this particular mouthpiece does not offer this feature. This can, however, be found in a few other OTC mouthpieces and at your dentist’s office.

The Growth Of Zyppah

Bar graphic of sales going upZyppah has seen an impressive growth since its launch in 2012.

According to a 2018 campaign created on Wefunder, a crowdfunding site, over the years they have sold over 200,000 units which is equivalent to approximately $24 million in sales.  Nearly all of these sales occurred between 2015 – 2017.

What’s the reason behind the rapid growth? Much of sales can be attributed to an impressive advertising campaign.

In 2012, Zyppah signed a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Bob Eubanks.

In recent years, they partnered with radio host Dr. Laura & also Jenny McCarthy.

They purchased a billboard ad in time square, sponsored the #7 Indy car at the Indianapolis 500, launched an ad campaign with Jim Rome, Mike & Mike as well as ESPN. In 2017 & 2018 Zyppah ran radio superbowl ads.

In addition, they hired “Jimmy”, to create XM radio commercials which air on Sirus Satellite Radio.

Needless to say, Zyppah has been dropping a lot of money on advertising in order to get their product in front of their audience and it has been effective.

Zyppah Used for the Treatment of Sleep Apnea

Zyppah-K professional series mouthpiece for sleep apnea

Zyppah-K is used to treat OSA

First, it’s important to note that the version available online is not for the treatment of the medical condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where you may experience pauses in breathing while asleep. Other symptoms include morning headaches, daytime tiredness, and inability to concentrate. The Zyppah is used to reduce or even eliminate the sound of snoring but does not necessarily treat any underlying issues such as OSA.

As with all OTC oral appliances, it is advisable that you consult with a doctor in order to determine whether you are simply a snorer or actually have a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, or a combination of both. According to this 2015 study, it’s estimated that up to 50% of men and 23% of women have sleep-disordered breathing. Treating a sleep disorder with an OTC device prior to consulting with a doctor can be extremely dangerous.

A close examination of the  Zyppah website reveals that the term “sleep apnea” is nowhere to be found and there is a good reason for this. The Zyppah should only be used for its intended purpose which is to treat snoring.

Zyppah does, however, offer several professional devices including the Zyaaph-T, Zyppah-K, Dorsal Zyppah Hybrid, and the Herbst Zyppah Hybrid. These are used for the treatment of snoring as well as mild to moderate sleep apnea.

In order to receive a professional series device, you must either visit one of Dr. Greenburg’s Snore Expert centers in California or find a local dentist who is a Zyppah Sleep Certified Dental Practitioner. Sleep Certified Dentist receive online webinars and course training from Zyppah.

FDA Clearance

FDA 510k cleared badge silver and blueIn order to legally sell a snoring mouth guard in the United States, one must first obtain FDA clearance, which typically involves proving that a product is substantially equivalent (SESE) to another device that was previously cleared by the FDA.

Obtaining approval usually involves hiring a consultant who can navigate through the process which usually can take a bit of time and is often costly. For this reason, there are several manufacturers who sell their product without FDA clearance.

Zyppah submitted a section 510k premarket notification to the FDA in February 2012 and in June 2012 it was decided that their device was substantially equivalent which gave the company the green light to sell their product to the public. The summary and determination letter can be found here.

While the FDA does not necessarily approve such medical devices, they do clear them.  Going through the effort to have their product cleared by the FDA is an indicator of the companies commitment to ensure consumer safety.

BBB Accreditation

BBB Accredited Business A+ badgeAccording to the BBB website, Zyppah is an accredited business, meaning that they are committed to making a good faith effort to resolve complaints that may arise from customers. Accredited businesses must also pay an annual fee to maintain this badge of trust. For a business the size of Zyppah, this would cost around $490 per year.

BBB shows that their file was opened in 2013 and they currently have an A+ rating. This rating is based on a number of factors such as complaint volume, unanswered complaints, unresolved complaints, and time in business.

Currently, they have experienced a total of thirty-five complaints in the last three years. Out to the 35 complaints, 18 were resolved to the customer’s satisfaction while the remaining 17 were either not satisfied with the response or did not relay to the BBB whether or not they were satisfied with the response that they received.

The majority of these issues appear to be related to returning the Zyppah and receiving a refund.

Considering that the company has sold over 200k with only 17 total complaints that may not have been resolved, this is a very good indication that they are committed providing good customer service. While it’s nearly impossible to make everyone happy,  199,965 out of 200,000 customers who have not complained is fairly impressive.

The Cost

Animated person standing next to question mark filled in with US $100 billWhen originally introduced, this device was selling for $123.00.

Today, you can expect to pay $99.95 plus shipping. For US residents, standard shipping (7-9 day) costs $9.95 while priority shipping (3-day) will set you back $21.95.

Since Zyppah is a California based business, the company is required to pay sales tax on orders that are delivered within the state. If you are a California resident, expect to pay an additional $9.00 – $10.00 in sales tax.

International buyers are charged $23.95 for standard shipping. Keep in mind that any duties, taxes, or port handling fees are typically paid for by the buyer.

Zyppah does not specify how long international shipping takes, although, the transit time for most international USPS packages is typically between 2-3 weeks.

Their terms and conditions page states that all orders are shipped within 3-5 days from the completion of an order.

Zyppah Coupon Codes

Zyppah does occasionally offer promotional discounts to their customers, however,  an online search did not reveal any coupon codes that are currently active.

I’ll make an effort to keep this review updated with any promotional codes, should they become available.

Where is Zyppah Made?

Made in USA with American flagOne question that’s often asked is where a product is made. There is a growing concern over toxic goods being imported from countries such as China. Such countries are known to have very little quality control within manufacturing facilities. Products that are made in the US are often more accepted by consumers who may be concerned that a product such as a mouthpiece may contain toxic chemicals.

The good news is, Zyppah is made in the USA. To be more specific, it’s manufactured in Houston Texas.

Which Retail Stores Sell the Zyppah?

If you were to visit your local drugstore or superstore in search of the Zyppah, will find yourself coming home empty-handed. You will not find the Zyppah, or any other snoring mouthpiece for that matter, at any store in the US.

Why, you ask? Simply because such products are currently considered a class II medical device by the FDA and are to be sold by prescription only. By prescription, we mean that they can only be sold online after answering a few questions or agreeing to their terms and conditions.

In some cases, the customer fills out a questionnaire which asks questions about their medical history such as the presence of sleep apnea, TMJ, TMD, missing teeth, respiratory issues, etc.

With most brands, if you answer the questions on their website correctly, a “script” will be written which allows you complete your order. Answer the questions incorrectly and you will not be able to move forward with the checkout process.

Zyppah doesn’t actually ask any questions. They do however ask you to agree to their terms and conditions which includes several statements about your health. The agree to terms box must be checked prior to completing your purchase.

For years, this is how snoring mouthpieces such as the Zyppah were sold. Zyppah is, however, looking to change that.

Is Zyppah Coming to Costco, Walmart, Target,  Save-On, Amazon, CVS & Walgreens?

Costco retail storefront In January 2018, Zyppah announced that they had plans to eventually sell their product in retail stores such as Costco, Walmart, Target, etc.

While the FDA classification for the Zyppah has not changed, according to a statement by Dr. Greenburg, the company is anticipating that the FDA will allow them to sell their product over-the-counter in the near future.

Here’s some evidence showing that they have completed an interventional study which will likely be used to help persuade the FDA that the Zyppah should be reclassified to perhaps a class one device and will allow it to be sold at retail stores.

For the time being, you will not find the Zyppah at retail stores. I will update this review if and when this happens to change.

Does It Come With A Guarantee?

Most snoring mouthpieces come with a money back guarantee, while others offer a “trial” period in which you can pay for shipping and try a mouthpiece for a period of time (usually 30 days) before being charged for the product.

While Zyppah does not offer a trial period, it does however come with a 90-day money back guarantee. If the Zyppah does not work or you are not satisfied for any reason, they will refund you within 90 days of purchase.

Thier return policy states that they will provide a refund with no questions asked. In order to receive this refund, you simply call their customer service phone number and ask for a Return Merchandise Authorization number.

It’s also worth noting that they will provide a free replacement (within the guarantee period) if you did not mold your mouthpiece correctly. In fact, they will replace your mouthpiece, free of charge, for any reason within the 90-day period.

Overall, their return policy seems to be one of the better that I have seen.

My Experience Using The Zyppah

Molded green and black ZyppahI must admit, when first introduced to the Zyppah I was somewhat skeptical. A tongue stabilizing strap that resembled a florescent green rubber band that was supposed to hold my tongue in place and prevents snoring seemed like a bit of a stretch.

I’ve tried quite a few tongue stabilizing anti-snoring products that all worked by holding the tongue forward such as the Good Morning Snore Solution.  However, they were all similar in nature and worked by placing the tip of your tongue into a pacifier-like device with a suction bulb at the tip. When squeezed, the bulb would draw the tongue forward and hold it there.  The Zyppah takes a different approach by holding the tongue down and in place using a soft rubber-like strap.

Before drawing any conclusions, I ordered a Zyppah and put it to the test.

My Zyppah was shipped via USPS and arrived within 3 days. The box that it arrived in was rather fancy, decorated with colorful shades of green, yellow and white while boasting the phrase “8 Hours Of Sleep & 0 Snoring”.

The contents of the package contained some paperwork which included the instructions, the device, and a storage case. Overall, I was rather impressed with the effort put into packaging this product. The instruction manual was well written and visually appealing. It took about 5 minutes to read over the literature and to get an understanding of exactly how this device worked.

Armed with my newfound knowledge, I was ready to begin the initial fitting process.

In comparison to other devices, the fitting process was quite similar with the exception of the tray design. Most of the “boil and bite” MAD’s that I have tried were made with some sort of tray walls which helps to guide the teeth into the correct position while fitting. The Zyppah mouthpiece does not offer this.

For this reason, it is critical that you read the instructions carefully to ensure that the initial fitting is completed correctly. Without the recessed trays, you must use a mirror to ensure that your upper and lower teeth are placed in the correct position prior to biting down and taking an impression.  The following is a brief rundown of the fitting process. More precise instructions can be found in the instruction manual.

The Fitting Process

Before I began, I gathered the following supplies and followed these instructions:

  • The Zyppah
  • A pair of tongs
  • Pot with water
  • A mirror
  • A stopwatch
  • Mug of cold water
  1. Remove the device from its packaging and give it a good rinse under warm water. In order to get a feel for the product, place it into your mouth while emulating the following fitting instructions.
  2. Heat a medium-sized pot of water on the range. Once the water reaches boiling temperatures, remove and allow to cool for a minute or so before continuing.
  3. Using a pair of tongs or a slotted spoon, submerge the device under the hot water for 45 seconds to 60 seconds. I left mine in for the full 60 seconds. Use the tongs or spoon to hold the device under water as it tends to naturally float.
  4. Carefully remove it from the hot water and allow to cool for 20 seconds. Be very careful while handling the device as the thermoplastic material will be very soft and quite sticky. It’s best to handle it with the rubber strap or the hard plastic portion of the unit.
  5. Before moving forward, understand which side is up. While looking at the front, the lower portion which reads “Zyppah” is the lower tray. You can also tell by looking at the lower tray as it rests slightly in front of the upper tray. While looking into a mirror, place the device into your mouth, starting with the lower teeth. Ensure that the lower teeth line buts right up against where the harder black plastic meets the softer green thermoplastic. Once aligned, stretch your jaw forward until the outer edge of the upper teeth are resting against where the hard plastic meets the soft plastic in the upper tray. Once aligned, firmly bite down and hold for 1 minute. You should feel your teeth sink into the soft green thermoplastic.
  6. Carefully remove after one minute and run under cold water or drop into a cup of cold water for a minute or so.
  7. Once cooled check for fit. If it does not fit properly you can try again by reheating the device and repeating the above steps.

15 Nights Without Snoring

Over the next two weeks, I used the Zyppah to control my snoring. One of the first things that I noticed was the ability to breathe freely with the open air hole locate at the front of the device.

The overall profile was rather slim. Some of the less expensive models leave you with the feeling of a mouth full of plastic but I didn’t get that sensation with this device.

As for triggering my gag reflex, this was not an issue.

During the initial adjustment period of 4 days, I noticed a bit of soreness in my jaw upon rising in the morning. The soreness diminished within the first hour of each day. After a few days, the sore feeling completely went away. I also experienced some drooling for a couple nights which also eventually subsided. These two side effects are typical and usually disappear after a few days of use.

Each morning I cleaned the device using a denture cleaning tablet. After a short soak, I allowed it to air dry and it was ready to go once again.

So does it work? While testing out the Zyppah I had experienced absolutely no snoring so it is in fact effective! I verified this by using sound recording app while asleep.

I suspect that my relief from snoring was due mostly to the jaw advancement feature while the tongue stabilizing strap may have helped to some degree. Depending on the reason for snoring, others who experience snoring due to a relaxed tongue may benefit more from the tongue stabilizing strap. There is a bit of evidence showing that stabilizing the tongue can reduce snoring and in some cases help with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

Recommendations

Green Check MarkThe Zyppah was introduced in June of 2012 and has quickly established itself as a leader in the stop snoring device industry. It was developed by a seasoned dentist who also holds a degree in biomedical engineering. The appliance has been proven to help eliminate snoring by using both mandibular repositioning and tongue stabilization. Its low profile makes it less obtrusive and more comfortable than some of the other devices available on the market. Also, it is constructed of a soft silicone-like material which increases comfort.

Compared to similar devices, it is a bit on the pricey side, although it is a one-of-a-kind product. The higher price is most likely driven by advertising expenses as well as research and development cost.

The combination of a tongue strap plus mandible advancement makes this product a unique Hybrid and one worthy of trying.

Taking all factors into consideration, I give this product the “okay”.
