Ripsnore is a stop snoring device that was created by David Colin Campbell in 2009. Mr. Campbell is listed as the “director” of the company but is also said to be the creator.

Over the past 4 years, the device spread across Europe and eventually made its way into the United States. Currently, it sells online in Australia, the UK, Canada, and the USA. It is also the only MAD sold at chemists and pharmacies in Australia and New Zealand. The unit is classified as a MAD and like all other products on the market, it claims to puts an end to your snoring.

Product details

Two Ripsnore Mouthpieces with storage case and packaging This boil and bite device can be custom fitted at home. Simply heat the device in warm water and insert into your mouth while adjusting your jaw slightly forward, ensuring that you lower teeth are positioned slightly in front of your upper. Remember to insert the breathing hole spacer before creating your impression. Drop in cold water for a few seconds, remove the spacer and the device is ready to use. Once this process has been completed, it will be completely transparent.

One unique feature found with the Ripsnore is the two breather holes located in the front of the device. Some products have one narrow passage, making breathing difficult while others have none at all. Dual air holes allow for better airflow and help to prevent the device from creating a whistling sound as air rushes past and into your airway.

While the manufacturer does not specify the material used in production, it is likely constructed of a medical grade plastic. They do specify it was created using “FDA approved materials” and that it is “BPA free”. FDA approved materials does not necessarily indicate that the device itself has been approved by the FDA.

Who’s behind the Ripsnore?

Word who? asking who's the inventor of RipSnore The company comprises of a middle age Aussie by the name of David Campbell along with 10 staff members in addition to local representatives and suppliers in Canada, the United States, and Britain.

Mr. Campbell is not a newcomer to the dental industry, as his family has a long history in the business. For years, his grandfather operated the largest dental supply company in Australia. His mother – a qualified dental practitioner.

David created the Ripsnore in order to solve his own snoring problem. Utilizing his skills and knowledge as an engineer, he developed this device with the help of his family who all together have been in the dental business for over 80 years. His wife, Jennifer, is credited with naming the device.

As for clinical trials, no information on studies could be found with this particular MAD.

It appears if Mr. Campbell has the experience and knowledge to create a useful product but does lack of clinical studies deem it as useless? Not necessarily. The truth is, most OTC stop snoring device available today were created by inventors and not necessarily professionals in the sleep industry. Also, there have been numerous studies done on the effects of MADs on snoring. Completing snoring clinical studies can be very time consuming and costly. For this reason alone, several manufacturers rely on others studies and base their product design around the proven devices used in the study.

My personal experience with the Ripsnore

I field tested the Ripsnore for 10 days and documented my experience in the video below.

The fitting process
Hot & cold water, tongs, a stopwatch and Ripsnore

Fitting requires hot & cold water, tongs, a stopwatch and mouthpiece

The fitting process was similar to other boil and bite devices that are commonly found online. I found the fitting process to be fairly straightforward and simple. In order to fit the device you need:

  • 2 cups or so of boiling water
  • 2 cups or so of ice cold water
  • a pair of tongs
  • a stopwatch

Here are the steps that I used to create an impression:

  1. Boil 2 cups of water on the stove and then transfer to another container such as a ceramic bowl or Pyrex dish.
  2. Create an ice bath using another bowl, water, and ice.
  3. Using a set of tongs, submerge the Ripsnore into the hot water for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove and allow to cool for a few seconds. Touch to the skin to ensure that its cool enough to put into your mouth.
  5. Place the device into your mouth (curved side up) and move the lower jaw slightly forward before biting down.
  6. Create a vacuum in your mouth by sucking the air out while using your fingers to push in on the gums.
  7. After 30 seconds, remove and place into an ice bath for 60 seconds.
  8. Remove spacer and check the fit.

I was able to get a good impression during the first try but if necessary, I could have placed it in hot water once again, this time for 18 seconds, and then remolded.

First night trying out the mouthpiece

Before going to bed I installed the device and waited for several minutes before I was able to fall asleep. Having a piece of plastic in your mouth can take some time to get used to. Once asleep, my wife monitored my snoring and said that I did not make a single sound the entire night! However, I did wake up with a puddle of drool running down the side of my face and a slight jaw ache. Hopefully, things will get better in the coming days.

The following 9 nights
My Ripsnore after fitting

My fitted Ripsnore

After 3 days, my jaw aches eventually passed and the drooling subsided. Falling asleep became much easier as my body became accustomed to wearing the mouth guard. From this point on it was smooth sailing. During the entire trial period, my wife says that I never snored one time so yes, it is effective when it comes to preventing snoring.

The two large breathing holes in the front provided adequate airflow which is important because I tend to breathe through my mouth while sleeping. The divider located down the middle of the air hole served its purpose by preventing the hole from collapsing if I were to bite down while asleep.

It was fairly comfortable to wear although I have tried other mouth guards which are much more compact and less bulky in the mouth. Improvements could be made to reduce the overall thickness of the unit. You will definitely feel and look like an orangutan when you install the RIPSnore so don’t forget to take it out before appearing in public!

In summary, here is a list of pro’s and con’s that I discovered:

Pros:

  • The fitting process is simple and straightforward
  • It works.
  • It has 2 large breather holes which I found to provide adequate air flow
  • The soft plastic material was easy on the gums

Cons:

  • Getting accustomed to wearing it takes a little time and can cause drooling and a jaw ache at first
  • A higher profile makes it a bit bulky in the mouth

UPDATE (10-29-13): I was contacted by Mr. Campbell in response to the thickness aspect the Ripsnore. Here’s what he had to say:

“Just a note on the thickness of the device as mentioned in your review. We did trial smaller models but decided on the larger version. This was due to 2 reasons.

1. A smaller device tends to not have the same resistance against jaw pull and therefore tends to be less effective and fail faster.
2. Teeth grinding. Most snorers grind their teeth and do not actually know it is happening. Therefore they also grind through the device, thus causing a failure.

We compromised in the design to obtain the maximum lifespan and also a comfortable fit. It could be smaller, but the lifespan and effectiveness would be shortened, therefore actually costing more to the customer in the long run. We did not want them to feel ‘ripped off’ in their experience of the product.”

Consumer review and complaints

Text cloud three in conversationScattered throughout the web are various reviews of the RIPsnore. The general conscious is that this device is just as effective as many of the other anti-snoring apparatuses that are available. Creating a custom mold is easy and if you have difficulty the first time, you are able to try again up to 4 times.

Most have effectively reduced or eliminated their snoring issues while using the Ripsnore while few, mostly heavy snorers, saw little improvement.

As for the whistling sound commonly heard with other units, the 2 large breathing holes seem to have solved this issue.

Most users find getting accustomed to having a mouthpiece in at night can be a challenge which is usually overcome within a few days. Additionally, some people complain of dry mouth or even excessive salivation.

Actual reviews from customers

“Well, received it quite a while ago and been using it every night. My wife said from the first night I stopped snoring, however, it was really bad one or two nights. I checked and it was the nights I was really really tired. Even my wife said she could not wake me at the time. But since then I basically stopped snoring, and my sleeping has improved as well. It takes a bit of getting used to the first week or so; slightly sore jaw, excessive drooling, and just basically getting used to sleeping with something in my mouth. That went away soon after and now I don’t even notice it anymore. Very glad I made the purchase. Can definitely recommend it. My wife is happy, too” –Shabeer Fathul (Does it really work)

“The most amazing product out there on the market! Don’t believe any imposers, this is the best product out there! As a very frustrated wife I’ve been through them all! And I can tell you nothing comes close to Ripsnore! You have saved not only our marriage but our bedroom life! 😉 Don’t think twice about purchasing this! My husband and I are regular customers now! And couldn’t be happier!” -Kirby Shannon (Youtube)

“Up until about 6 weeks ago I was using the RipSnore device every night which worked fairly well, it stopped me snoring as loud but it drove me round the bend, as I wear dentures I couldn’t get a perfect fit and it would sometimes come out during the night and I would snore” -KeefG (British Snoring)

Price tag

Drawer with cash in itRipsnore offers two of their devices for $67 with no additional charges for shipping. When broken down individually, the overall cost is just under $35 per unit. At $35, this is on the lower end of the price spectrum when compared others.

Is it worth the money?

Question mark asking if it's worth itBefore giving my recommendation, I would like to begin by giving my off-topic opinion of the product name.

The “RIP” portion of Ripsnore is a commonly known acronym for “rest in peace” – a term used to wish eternal rest upon one who has died. While completely unrelated to the result of using the device, the creator could have used a better choice of words while naming his product.

As for the performance of the device, several hundred reviewers are reporting success when it comes to eliminating snoring. Most have positive results the first night and continue to use the product. Personally, I had an overall good experience using this product.

The ability to create a customized fit in your home is always a plus as is having the ability to breathe through the mouth. Unfortunately, the omission of air holes is a design flaw commonly seen in several snoring mouthguards today. They have taken it one step further by creating additional holes to ensure adequate airflow and prevent the train whistle sound.

At $35 per unit, the Ripsnore provides unsurpassed value when compared its competitors. Unfortunately, the manufacturer forces you to purchase two at a time. With 2 snorers in a household this can actually be a plus but if you are snoring solo, having 2 may not be desired.

Having the ability to last 18 months or more is desirable. When it comes to longevity, this oral appliance excels as many others only last a few months.

The inventor has the necessary credentials to create such a device with a rich family history in the dental industry and a background in engineering. Ripsnore seems to be a solid product that has proven itself by having several satisfied customers.

I would consider this device a base model economy oral appliance which is affordable and effective. If you are willing to spend a little more money and are interested in a less bulky device, there are others available. One alternative that I really favor is the Zquiet. There are several reasons why this has become one of the favorite devices to treat my simple snoring. First, unlike many OTC mandibular advancement devices, it’s compact, taking up very little room inside your mouth. In addition, it works straight out of the box and does not need to be fitted. Also, you can speak and even sip water with the device in your mouth. I’ve posted a product review which goes into further detail if you are interested in learning more. This is an A+ product in my opinion and should be considered by anyone who is in the market for a comfortable yet effective device to control snoring.

Which mouthpiece should I buy?

The anti-snoring mouthpiece is one of the most highly effective stop snoring solutions available. With over 100 different products to choose from, deciding which one to buy can be challenging.

As a snorer and product reviewer, I have tried many of these devices and created a list of recommended devices that will help to make this decision much easier.

Ask your doctor is a mouthpiece for snoring is the right decision

Before trying something new, any sensible person usually asks whether or not the product in question is safe to use. We obviously don’t want to do anything that would cause our body harm right?

When it comes to snoring mouthguards, there has been quite a bit of buzz surrounding this topic. After all, it wasn’t until recently that you could purchase a MAD or TSD on the internet without ever seeing a doctor. Technically speaking, they are still considered a class II medical device by the FDA and require a prescription to obtain.

It seems as if overnight one DIY product after another began to surface on the internet, all promising you the best night sleep ever. Some devices were developed by actual doctors who specialize in sleep medicine, some by dentist and orthodontist while others were simply inventors looking to capitalize on the latest trend that everyone is talking about. Whatever the case may be, a flood of new devices has entered the market, causing concern for some who use buy them.

Are snoring mouthguards really dangerous?

Obstructive sleep apena is one of two forms of sleep apena

Obstructive sleep apnea is one of two forms of sleep apnea

The answer to this question all depends on the reason for your snoring. While the majority of people simply snore, some may unknowingly have a medical condition known as sleep apnea which affects approximately 18 million Americans. In a nutshell, sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that involves multiple pauses in breathing while sleeping. Signs that you may have sleep apnea include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Issues with memory
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Falling asleep while doing activities during the day

There 2 types of sleep apnea – Central and Obstructive. Central sleep apnea involves a disruption of signals from your brain which tell your lungs to breath. As a result, breathing while sleeping will stop for a period of time. Central is less common but much more serious than OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea is more prevalent and also a serious medical condition that can lead to conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke. It involves an actual airway obstruction that prevents air from making its way through to the lungs. People who have been diagnosed with this condition are often issued a CPAP machine which actually provides constant air pressure to keep the airway clear.

How to tell if you simply snore or have sleep apnea

Sleep apena or snoringFor simple snoring, mouthpieces are a great choice. However, what if you actually do have a more serious sleep disorder such as sleep apnea? How can you tell the difference between the two?

This is where many people become confused and often make a bad decision. Before going the self-treatment route, it’s a good idea to first speak with your doctor and see what he or she has to say. If your doctor suspects sleep apnea, they may perform a sleep study to eliminate the possibility of a condition such as OSA or CSA.

Can you use a mouthpiece to treat sleep apnea?

In some cases, people have successfully treated their obstructive sleep apnea with a mouthguard.

Using a snoring mouthguard to treat OSA should only be attempted under the supervision of a doctor. Self-treating OSA using one of these devices is of course not a good idea.

Recommendation

Knowing the underlying cause of snoring is extremely important before treating it. Snoring is no laughing matter and should be taken seriously. Before using any oral appliance, first, speak with your doctor in order to determine if there is an underlying issue causing your snoring.

SleepTight – An Affordable and Reliable Mouthpiece

Its most notable features include a larger air hole at the front and grooves that are incorporated into the tray which helps to create a tighter fit. For mouth breathers, an opening that provides adequate airflow is necessary and the SleepTight has the largest opening that I have seen in a mouthpiece.

Puresleep not molded

$59.90 + $10 shipping for 2 Puresleep mouthpieces

Puresleep was invented by  Dr. Douglas Fenton, a San Francisco dentist and Noel Lindsay who was a snoring sufferer in search of a solution.

For a decade, Dr. Fenton and other physicians in the area prescribed similar snoring mouthpieces to their patients, charging them a whopping $400! Along came Mr. Lindsay a businessman who saw the potential in creating an easily accessible version of Dr. Fenton’s mouthpiece that is affordable the general public. From here, the Pure Sleep Company was created. Today, the company claims to have the “#1 selling snoring solution in the world”.

What is the PureSleep?

The Puresleep is best classified as a boil and bite Mandibular Advancement Device which is custom fitted and used to re-position the jaw forward, clearing tissue obstructions in the air passage. As a result, the sound that we know as “snoring” ceases.

It is constructed of two different types of plastic which are both BPA and latex free. The device is made in the USA and all materials used in production are US sources.

Customization

Dr. Douglas Fenton inventor of Puresleep

Dr. Douglas Fenton creator of Puresleep

When the device arrives in your mailbox, it comes in 2 pieces and includes instructions on how to create a custom fit and how to use the device. One unique feature is the snap-in jaw advancement adjustment which allows you to move the lower portion of the device into one of three different positions. Since everyone’s jaw rests in a different position, having the ability to make such adjustments is a key feature.

Creating a custom fit begins by choosing a position that is comfortable yet keeps the lower jaw in the advanced position. Choose the setting carefully as this can not be reversed after the next step. Once a position is selected, secure the device in the desired position by snapping together the upper and lower portions. Next, heat up a pot of tap water to the specified temperature, drop in the device, remove and place in the mouth to create a custom mold. It is important to hold your teeth in this position for 45 seconds while it cools and creates an impression.

As for longevity, expect to see between 6-9 months of regular use before having to replace.

User reviews

3 speech clouds indicating a review Pure Sleep Co. has been around for quite some time now. In fact, the company started selling the device in 2007. Unlike similar products that have recently made an appearance, this one has a ton of reviews which are mostly positive and claim that the device functions as promised.

As for complaints or side effects, some experience jaw soreness, dry mouth, discomfort or inability to keep the device in overnight. These issues typically resolve their self within a few days of use. Others say that it’s too bulky and uncomfortable to wear every night. Also, some have reported a case of excess drooling while sleeping with this device.

Users who have tried similar devices often experience many of the same symptoms so this is not an issue that is exclusive to PureSleep.

While there will always be those who have complaints, the vast majority of people report success with this product. Being a worldwide bestseller, having a few dissatisfied customers is inevitable. When reading through reviews online, keep in mind that this company has several competitors who leave bogus reviews just to damage the companies reputation. In other words, take everything that you read with a grain of salt.

Before purchasing this device or any other, read up on the causes of snoring and the possibility of your snoring is linked to sleep apnea, a serious medical condition.

The BBB

bbb logoWhile sifting through several consumer reviews, I noticed a handful of complaints filed with the BBB by consumers. Most of these issues dealt with shipping and billing while a couple had to do with product satisfaction. Overall, the company has resolved the issues and the cases have been closed.

The cost

The company has recently been running a buy one get one free deal on this device. You will receive 2 devices with storage containers for $59.90 + $10 shipping. When broken down on a per unit basis, this comes out to around $35 per unit. When compared to similar devices in the same classification, the PureSleep offers an incredible value.

Should I buy the Puresleep?

While there are more complicated and impressive devices available, Puresleep is one of the more popular affordable snoring mouthpieces. The company has been around for nearly 7 years now which is very rare in this particular industry. Additionally, it was created by an actual dentist which is a plus in an industry that is filled with fly-by-night inventors who often do not understand what it takes to make an effective yet safe product.

Prior to coming to market, Dr. Fenton used this device in his own practice for a decade. Technically speaking, this product has been put to use for 17 years now!

As for design, breathing air holes in the front allow for oral breathing while sleeping. Being constructed of safe materials manufactured in the US is a must because it will remain in your mouth for several hours each day and you do not want unhealthy toxins to leach into your body.

Overall, Dr. Fenton has a proven product that is priced to sell therefore, I would recommend it to anyone with a snoring issue. After all, with a 30-day money back guaranty, it much cheaper (and less risky) than going through surgery for snoring.

The Original SnoreDoc is yet another MAD used to adjust the lower jaw forward, opening the airway and preventing snoring. This mouthguard like oral appliance happens to be one of several similar devices that have surfaced in recent years as an increasing number of people deal with snoring issues on a nightly basis. Some suggest that nearly 40% of Americans snore and this number only accelerates as we age. Snoring can lead to stroke and heart disease along with several other ailments.

The SnoreDoc proudly boasts that it has the “best anti-snoring device” and it even says so under their websites title. Are such claims true or are there better options available? These are a couple of the questions that we will further investigate.

What makes the SnoreDoc special?

Original Snoredoc Mouthpiece front view on top of storage caseIn a world where there are so many options available, most people are interested in exactly what differentiates this product from others that are available. For starters, its customizable boil and bite technology allows you to take an exact impression of your mouth for a better fit. While this feature is not exclusive, it is a plus that several others do not have.

The SnoreDoc has a breather hole which allows air to enter the mouth while the piece is installed. People who have nasal issues can appreciate this feature as other mouthpieces restrict or even prevent breathing through the mouth. For some, this reason alone is a deciding factor.

In addition, it is registered with the FDA, making it safe to use. The company also claims that they are registered with the Better Business Bureau, although I was unable to find any information while searching for the product name or Pearl Enterprises LLC, the listed manufacturer’s name.

What I found while testing the SnoreDoc

I tried out the Snoredoc for a week to see how it measures up. When I received it in the mail, the device came packaged with a hard case, instruction booklet, and a Popsicle stick. The fitting process was easy and only took about 10 minutes. Here’s what I did:

  1.  Boil a pot of water and remove from the heat source for 20 seconds.
  2. Insert the provided Popsicle stick into the front air hold. Be sure to not push it in too far because this will interfere with the fitting process.
  3. Submerge the entire device into the hot water for exactly 18 seconds, remove and shake off the excess hot water.
  4. Allow to cool slightly and place into your mouth curved side up.
  5. Immediately move the lower jaw forward as if you were eating corn on the cob. Make sure that you lower teeth are just past your upper teeth.
  6. Hold this position for one minute while the mouthpiece takes an impression of your teeth.
  7. After a minute, remove from your mouth and place into a bowl of cold water for 2 minutes. This will ensure that the plastic retains its shape.
  8. Remove from the water, remove the Popsicle stick and check for fit.

I was able to achieve an awesome fit by following these instructions. The unit fits well inside of my mouth and was ready to use.

Seven snoreless nights

My fitted Snoredoc resting on top of storage case

My fitted Snoredoc

I used the SnoreDoc for the next 7 nights and had no issues when it came to snoring. There was an adjustment period of 3 days initially and I did experience some jaw stiffness in the morning. This is to be expected with any mandibular advancement device as your lower jaw is held in an unnatural position for several hours while you sleep. After the third day, I was accustom to wearing it and no longer experienced any discomfort.

The Snoredoc did, in fact, work well to control my snoring. It works using the same principle as many of the other anti-snoring devices, by holding the lower jaw forward as you sleep. I would say that this device is comparable to the Sleeppro Standard or the Ripsnore.

One feature that could use improvement was the air hole. It is a bit narrow (the size of a Popsicle stick) which can make breathing through the mouth a challenge if you are a mouth breather. This is otherwise a good product for anyone who is looking for a basic boil and bite device that is affordable.

I documented my experience using this mouthpiece in the video below.

What are the reviewers saying?

Illustration of two people reviewing For the most part, those who purchased this device have been satisfied with their purchase. As with all other products that are available, there are occasional complaints or concerns. One of the most prevalent concerns is the fact that sometimes the piece makes a whistling sound due to the size and shape of the air hole. This is an understandable complaint as the sound of whistling can be just as troublesome as snoring itself. While this is unlikely to happen in most cases, it is still a possibility.

Those who have a tendency to grind their teeth often express discontent with the fact that the device does not last very long. While this may be true, it is also the case for just about any other product on the market.

Some report having a difficult time keeping it in their mouth the entire night. After a few nights, you should get used to wearing it and it will usually stay for the entire night. If you are still having trouble, consider remolding it to better fit your mouth. Be careful as they can only be remolded 3 or 4 times. Doing this too often can weaken the soft rubber material and render the device useless.

Comments from actual SnoreDoc users

“I am a CPAP user who prefers not to take my machine for short trips. After following the instructions for fitting, I found the SnoreDoc did help with my sleep. Still, even though I did repeat the fitting procedure a couple of times, I feel that I slightly better fit would make this product even more useful.” – Jack (Rakuten)

“I was very troubled with my husband’s snoring. Though we tried oral sprays and anti snoring pills, the snoring symptoms reappeared after some time. SnoreDoc helped us get over the issue, and eased off my husband’s snoring perfectly. I am very thankful to the device, and recommend it to others as well.” Patty Moore (As Seen on TV)

“I’ve seen a few reviews for a stop snoring mouthpiece and ended up buying the SnoreDoc. I heard it is better because a lot of people complained regarding discomfort and ease of use. The SnoreDoc has a custom molding mouthpiece that works by soaking in hot water and then using to mold to your teeth. Its actually pretty comfortable. I’d really recommend you try the snoredoc it really might help you.” Thetermy (Well Trained Mind)

 How much will I pay?

This device sells for $49.99 and includes a storage case. Also, it ships free of charge. Price wise, it falls in line with others in its class.

Pile of money indicating cost of SnoreDoc

Making the purchase decision

There are several reasons why I prefer this mouthpiece over several of the others available. Here are the pros and cons

Pros:

Thumbs up or thumbs down

  • A frontal air hole permits breathing through the mouth. Many who snore breath in through their nose and out through their mouth. Some breath exclusively through their mouth. Without a breather hole, this task would be very difficult, if not impossible.
  • Thermo-plastic ensures a comfortable fit as it can be molded and remolded a several times. This boil and bite type fitting is the next best thing to getting a custom impression made at your dentist’s office. Several competitors are starting to catch on, designing their products in a similar fashion.
  • At $49.99, it is affordable. Other often more complex devices that are available can cost $100 or more. They offer a money back guarantee which makes it even more enticing.
  • The manufacturer claims a 95% satisfaction rate. While this does not necessarily mean “success rate” it does indicate that many are satisfied with their purchase.

Cons:

  • The Snoredoc is somewhat bulky and can really leave you with a sore mouth. While this typically goes away after a few days for most, others have discomfort that lingers as long as the device is used. There are other alternatives available which take up less room in the mouth or even better, none at all.
  • Although an abundance of studies were done on MAD’s this particular one has not been clinically tested. This, however, does not mean that it doesn’t work because there are several who have tried the product and are happy with the results.

The Snoredoc works like several other OTC snoring prevention devices and is fairly affordable. There are however better alternatives that are available which may cost a few dollars more but are a better long-term solution. The Zquiet, for instance, is one of my favorites because it works well and is much more compact than any boil and bite snore control product that I’ve used. I’ve tried this product and wrote a detailed post highlighting the many reasons why I like their product. It’s effective, easy to use and does not have special fitting instructions. You simply rinse it off and place it into your mouth. One of the best features is the hinged design which allows you to freely open and close your mouth, making it less awkward to wear.

Keep in mind that there are several actions that you can take to help prevent snoring. Here’s some extensive information provided by Walgreens on sleep apnea that relates to snoring. Also, take a look at these great tips to help snoring naturally.

With dozens of products on the market that claim to eliminate snoring, deciphering between which ones actually work and which are the decoys can be an overwhelming challenge. Snoremender PS by Sleep Well Enjoy Life happens to be one of these products and I am going to save you a lot of time by sharing the information that I found on this device in the form of a review.

Device description and background

SnoreMender PS front view open white background The Snoremender PS is a mandibular advancement device that repositions the lower jaw forward, preventing the soft tissues in the throat from collapsing and causing the snoring sound. This technique is used by several manufacturers who sell anti-snoring devices and has been around for several years now.

Aside from its classification as a MAD, it has several unique features that are rarely found when compared to other product that are available.

    • The unique “hinged” design allows you to freely open and close your mouth. The vast majority of others out there hold your mouth in a closed position and sometimes leave small breathing holes. The hinged design is a plus for those who tend to breathe through their mouth while sleeping. This is especially helpful to sinus sufferers who are unable to breathe through their nose.
    • It is the only mouthpiece on the market that addresses the issue of outward pressure on the lower front teeth by refocusing the area in which the device makes contact with the surface of each tooth.
    • Snoremender PS offers simplicity which lessens the chance of product malfunction. More complicated devices are often constructed of fragile components which can break, rendering the mouthpiece unusable. It is constructed of a soft medical grade plastic which is pliable and will not break if dropped.
    • A simple design means that there are fewer crevices for germs and bacteria to hide in. After a quick rub down with your fingers using soap and water, you will be able to reach all areas where these germs may be hiding.
    • With a useful life of 12-24 months, it outlasts several of its competitors. This translates into substantial savings if you plan to use a MAD for several years to come.

Adjustability

The Snoremender does offer some degree of adjustability allowing the user to increase or reduce jaw advancement by heating the lower portion of the device. There are a few advantages and disadvantages when it comes to adjusting this style of a mouthpiece.

Advantages

  • The device remains easy to clean even after making adjustments
  • Minimal bulk in the mouth
  • It can be micro-adjusted
  • The flexible frame makes it more adaptive than a rigid screw mechanism, and also acts to prevent pressure

Disadvantages

  • It is not as simple as turning a screw. Comparatively speaking, it’s as easy to adjust as a Somnogard AP although with the Snoremender no special tools are required to make adjustments. Such tools are sometimes misplaced, making further adjustments difficult.
  • The range of adjustment is medium – however, if further adjustment is needed you can switch to a different strength offered by the manufacturer.

The company

Three men silhouette Sleep Well Enjoy Life companyThe company behind the device, Sleep Well Enjoy Life, originated in the UK and in 2011 made its way to the United States. It was originally formed in 2007 and has been led by Jeremy Alan Kenyon ever since. Mr. Kenyon  had a background in the computer and gaming industry up until he joined the company in 2007. He attended the University of Cambridge in the UK, receiving a degree in applied mathematics and computing.

Mr. Kenyon designed the Snoremender PS with the assistance of a firm of Denmark orthodontists. The team of designers was led by a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) who has been practicing for more than 30 years. The AADSM focuses on dental solutions such as oral appliances and upper airway surgery. Having a seasoned industry professional involved in the design process helps to strengthen the credibility of this product.

This small company is privately owned and operates with Mr. Kenyon listed as the director and secretary.

Their website claims that their device has been “clinically proven”, and they have provided clinical data to support this claim.

Snoremender PS Vs Zquiet

Snoremender on left vs Zquiet on right

Snoremender PS vs Zquiet

Similar to the Snoremender PS, the Zquiet offers a hinged design that also helps to reduce or eliminate snoring. While they share several attributes, there are 3 areas where they differ.

      1. Snoremender PS, although it claims to work “out of the box” can be adjusted by heating the plastic between 150° and 170° in order to stretch and shape the material. This temperature can be easily achieved by mixing 2 cups of boiling water with 1 cup of cold water.  The Zquiet does not offer any adjustability although it may be trimmed for a more comfortable fit.
      2. While the price points are similar, Snoremender PS does not charge for shipping which makes it about $10 cheaper than its competitor. With the Snoremender PS, you will receive a discount when purchasing in quantity. For instance, if you purchase two you will save $8 on each while purchasing five or more will save $14 on each item. This is especially useful if you are purchasing for yourself and a partner. Remember, while this device will last for several months, it will eventually need to be replaced.
      3. The Snoremender PS offers “Pressure Shift Technology” which focuses most of the outward pressure on the larger (and stronger) most inner teeth instead of the smaller front teeth. The Zquiet does not offer this.

My personal experience using this stop snoring remedy

Over the past week, I have experimented with both the original Snoremender and the Snoremender PS. The Snoremender PS model was recently released (November 2013) and offers several improved features compared to the original. When you order from their website you will receive the new “PS” model although the original device is still available upon request. I happened to discover the Snoremender PS shortly after its introduction and it turns out that I was the first to do a review comparing both the new and original devices. I share my entire experience using both devices in the video below.

Original Snoremender vs Snoremender PS

The original Snoremender was released in 2007 and in November of 2013, the improved “PS” model was released. In case you are wondering, PS in an acronym for “pressure shift”. Keep on reading and I will further explain. I’ll start by comparing the two by pointing out the differences and similarities that I noticed.

Thickness of material. One of the first things that I noticed was that the PS model has walls which are much thicker than the original model. The type of material used seems to have remained the same between the two. The increased thickness of the material gave an overall appearance of a higher quality product.

Hinge tension. The tension of the hinges was a bit stronger with the newer PS model. I believe that this was due to the increase in overall product thickness. From what I understand, the company offers a handful of the same devices with different hinge tensions. They provide a free exchange program if the one sent to you does not work. By default, you are sent a medium strength device but there is also a low strength and high strength device available.

Edge sharpness. One noticeable change with the new PS model is the smoothness of the edges of the tray. With a thicker material, the manufacturer was able to create edges that are more rounded and easier on the gums. The original product is constructed of a thinner material, making it difficult to round off the edges.

Unnecessary pieces removed. The new design removed unnecessary parts of the device. For instance, the original had an outer and inner wall on both the upper and lower trays. Due to the nature of how all mandibular advancement device work, it’s not necessary to have an inner upper tray or an outer lower tray. When in use the outer upper tray is being pulled in while the lower tray is being pushed out.

Breathing spacers. The original device did not have a feature which prevents your mouth from completely closing. For mouth breathers, this is an important feature. The PS model was introduced with 4 small posts, two on the upper tray and two corresponding posts on the lower tray. These posts prevent the mouthpiece from completely closing and leave about 1/8″ air gap between the two trays.

Area of pressure. Perhaps one of the greatest improvements to the original Snoremender has to do with how the device uses the teeth as leverage points to hold the lower jaw forward. With the original device, most of the outward pressure is applied to the smaller lower front teeth which are generally weaker compared to larger most rear teeth. Also, the pressure is applied mostly to the top of the teeth. If you understand how leverage works, it’s easy to see how a tremendous amount of pressure applied far away the fulcrum (in this case where the tooth roots into the gum) can really stress these small lower front teeth.

The new device corrects this issue by focusing the pressure on the stronger more inner teeth. It also refocuses the pressure on the base of the tooth and not the top by changing the angle of the lower tray contact point.  Take a look at the image below. Most of the outward force is focused on the teeth shaded in purple and less on the yellow and green colored teeth.

Illustration of how pressure is shifted from the front teeth to the sides

How did it work for me?

I tried both devices for a total of 7 days, alternating every other night between the two. I will go ahead and cut to the chase and tell you that they both did, in fact, stop my snoring. That being said, I present an explanation of my experience using each device including the initial modifications, overall fit, and effectiveness.

Modifications

The manufacturer claims that their product works “out of the box” and while this may be true for some, I did have to slightly modify each one prior to use.

I found the original device to have unbearably sharp edges. Using a nail file, I dulled the edges so that they were blunter. This seemed to make it less irritating to the gums. Thankfully, this issue was corrected with the PS model.

With the PS model, I had issues with the lower tray popping off of my teeth. I easily corrected this issue by heating the lower tray in 158° water for 1.5 minutes and then holding it in my mouth for 2 minutes. I used a thermometer, however, the manufacturer suggest a temperature range between  150° and 170° which can be achieved by mixing 1 cup cold water with 2 cups boiling hot water. Using this method does not require the use of a thermometer.

The fit

Both devices fit in my mouth and didn’t fall out. However, the PS provided a closer and more comfortable fit overall. The original device does not take the different sizes of each tooth into consideration and the PS does.

Effectiveness

Both devices effectively controlled my snoring. As far as this aspect, one did not outperform the other.

What are the actual users saying?

Customer survey showing pencil and satisfaction rating from happy to sadOverall, those who have purchased this particular oral appliance have been satisfied with their decision. Some do report mouth soreness that lasts for several days. Others report excessive drooling while sleeping. These are typical complaints commonly cited by users of other mouthpieces.

Minor tweaking can be achieved by heating and pulling on the material. This is a different approach than the commonly found “boil and bite” types that are available. Some users found the adjustment process to be somewhat challenging. Others were able to use it right out of the box without any adjustments. Whether or not it will work out of the box for you greatly depends on your mouth structure.

Some have used this device in an attempt to help with sleep apnea and have had moderate success. However, using it to treat such a medical condition without proper diagnosis or doctor supervision is not advisable. According to Aetna, MAD’s help in some cases to prevent airway collapse while other times a continuous positive airway pressure machine is necessary.

The cost

Sack of money, indicating the cost of Snoremender The cost will vary depending on how many units you wish to buy. Here is the breakdown:

      • 1 for $57 + Free shipping
      • 2 for $49 each + Free shipping ($8 savings on each)
      • 5 for $43 each + Free shipping ($14 savings on each)

This product is one of the few out there being offered with free shipping.

To buy or not to buy

There is no denying that this device has several positive qualities along with a few negative ones.

In the industry of over-the-counter anti-snoring devices, it is certainly no newcomer with a 6-year history in the UK and USA. The design offers innovation, simplicity, durability, and adjustability. All four of these attributes are not commonly found in one product.

The device itself is small and compact, making it less bulky and intrusive in ones’ mouth. In addition, the simple design makes cleaning a breeze and ensures that all the nasties do not colonize.

Having clinical information to support their claims in addition to an AADSM member of their design team helps tremendously with credibility.

In addition, the Pressure Shift Technology helps to set this product apart from its competitors.

While some user complaints have surfaced, many of these are not exclusive to the Snoremender PS and are found in other similar products.

The cost savings of purchasing multiple devices gives it the competitive advantage over similar products. If you are interested in purchasing multiple units (for instance, one for you and one for your partner) this product may offer a better value.

Green check markOverall, this is a unique product that has so far stood the test of time. While the price is in the mid to high range, it is comparably priced to others in its class. It is, in fact, a simple yet effective device that delivers as promised.  Because of this, I recommend giving it a try. If you are interested in the Snoremender, you may also want to check out a very similar product that I recommend called the Zquiet. This product is very similar in nature, FDA approved and made in the USA. It was also developed by a dentist by the name of Avery Lieberman who has more than 20 years experience in sleep medicine.

Snoring is an issue that affects approximately 2 out of every five Americans. Often times, people will seek the latest gadgets, pills, potions, or even resort to surgery in order to rid their self of this problem. While each one of these solutions has its place, there are a few simple home remedies that are easy and affordable. Before handing your money over, consider these three stop snoring solutions.

Take a steamy shower

Taking a hot showerOne of the easiest home remedies for snoring may be as simple as taking a shower. If you have chronic nasal congestion, this could be a helpful solution to your snoring woes.

Before going to bed, take a long shower with the door closed and exhaust fan turned off. Adjust the water temperature so that it is bearably hot, being careful not to scald yourself. Take your time, relax and focus on breathing through your nose. The water vapors will help loosen mucus and open nasal passages in addition to moistening the airway. Don’t forget to turn the exhaust fan on once you are finished.

If you are crunched for time or perhaps are unable to shower, run a small towel under hot water and wring out excess water. Placing the towel over your face for several minutes will produce a similar effect.

Sleep on an incline

organizeit.comBy sleeping in a raised position, the soft palate in your throat will less likely come in contact with your airway. This can cause an airway blockage which is the primary cause of snoring.

While an adjustable bed may not be in your budget, a simple solution is to use bed risers. Place a 4″-6″ riser under the head legs of your bed. If you are on a really tight budget you can stack 2×4’s or even use bricks. Use books, blocks, whatever it takes to get the head of your bed in an elevated position. You may also want to swap out your pillows for newer, firmer ones which will also help to elevate the head and prevent snoring.

Avoid dairy products

dairy freeCheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream, and other dairy products consumed before bedtime can cause snoring. How so? It is a known fact that when you eat dairy products your body produces excessive mucus. An abundance of thick mucus can cause airways to become sticky, ultimately collapsing and restricting breathing. This theory has been around for a long time and is still debatable. The latest information indicated that some are affected by dairy while others are not. Either way, it’s worth a try.

The effects of dairy products can last for several hours so keep your bedtime in mind before consuming that fudge sundae or glass of milk.

Before taking drastic, and often more expensive measures, you may want to try these tips to stop snoring naturally.

About the Good Morning Snore Solution

How Does The GMSS Work?

Closeup Blue Good Morning Snore Solution on a white backgroundWhile Mandibular Advancement Devices currently dominate the anti-snoring device market, a newer type of product classified as a Tongue Stabilizing Device or TSD is beginning to consume an increasingly large portion of the market share. One such device is the Good Morning Snore Solution. Like other TSD’s, this one works by using a suction bulb to pull the tip of the tongue forward where it remains while you sleep. The theory is that the tongue actually relaxes while sleeping, creating a blockage in the airway and causing snoring. Like the MAD, this device is also effectively treats snoring. The company even goes as far as saying that it is effective at treating mild to moderate sleep apnea in some cases.

A One Size Fits All Solution

Blue GMSS contained within plastic retail packaging One of the greatest advantages of this product is the fact that it is ready to use out of the box. Other oral appliances require that you boil and bite the mouthpiece to fit or make complicated adjustments. The GMSS is a one size fits all solution that will work in just about any circumstance. It simply rests between your gums and inner lip. The suction bulb grabs and holds the tongue forward, preventing it from moving back. There is no need to mold, trim or adjust it.

Will It Work? – A Simple Test

Looking at this simple device, it’s quite difficult to imagine how the GMSS can prevent snoring.

Fortunately, there’s a very easy in-home test that you can perform to determine if it will work for you. Performing this test only takes a few seconds and will help you to better understand if a TSD, such as the Good Morning Snore Solution, is a good fit for you. There are three simple steps:

  1. Take a look around to ensure nobody is watching you. This is very important. 🙂
  2. Pretend as if you are sleeping and emulate the sound of snoring.
  3. Now, stop for a second and stick your tongue out through your teeth and resume the sound of snoring.
Woman sticking out tongue performing mouthpiece test

Stick out your tongue and try to emulate the sound of snoring

Did you notice a difference between the snoring sound with your tongue inside versus your tongue outside of your mouth? I just tried it and found that while it was easy to generate snoring sounds at first, it was very difficult to recreate the snoring sound with my tongue out. While this experiment is rather unscientific, it should give you an idea of whether or not the GMSS will work for you.

Why does holding your tongue forward prevent snoring? The sound of snoring most often originates in the airway. Airway tissue becomes loose and flap against each other, generating this sound. When the tongue is held forward, the tissue surrounding the airway tightens and prevents airway tissues from flapping around.

TSDs such as the GMSS is a simple snoring solution that has been clinically proven to work in several studies.

Who’s Behind The GMSS?

Canadian dentist Dr. Nancy Markley on white background

Dr. Nancy Markley, Founder of MPowRx

The GMSS was developed by Dr. Leslie Dort who currently practices dentistry in Calgary Canada. Once created, she conducted clinical studies on this device to verify its effectiveness. The results indicated a clinically significant reduction in sleep disturbances.

In 2007, Dr. Dort teamed up with another Calgary dentist, Dr. Nancy Markley who created the company Mpowrx to market and sell the GMSS. What started off as a small startup,  now has a far global reach with multiple distribution centers in operation worldwide.

Is The Company Trustworthy?

Better Business Bureau accredited business logo As you may already know, one of the easiest way to check the trustworthiness of a company is to visit the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and search for the company that you are interested in.

For well over 100 years, the BBB has been helping consumers in North America locate businesses, brands, and charities they can trust. They are a non-profit association who provides unbiased information to consumers and also serve as an intermediary between businesses and customers, helping to settle thousands of disputes annually.

A business must meet certain criteria in order to become BBB accredited. In addition, they must pay a minimum of $623 per year to maintain their accreditation. Larger companies often pay over $16,000 a year in BBB accreditation fees.  Most companies that are serious about their business seek BBB accreditation.

According to the BBB, the Good Morning Snore Solution is sold by Mpowrx Health & Wellness Products 2012 Inc who is based out of Calgary, AB. Records show that they have been in business since June 2007 and became accredited in March 2012.

At the time of this writing, they are maintaining an A+ rating with a few minor complaints, mostly concerning return shipping. All complaints have been quickly addressed by the company and there are currently no open cases.

Being an accredited member of the BBB and maintaining an A+ rating with no open cases is a strong indicator that Mpowrx is a trustworthy company that takes their customers and business seriously.

Does the GMSS contain BPA?

Illustration of person holding up No BPA sign What is Bisphenol A (BPA) and why should you be concerned if your mouthpiece contains this chemical? Also, does the Good Morning Snore Solution contain BPA? Let’s start by answering the first question.

BPA is a synthetic compound that has been around for well over 100 years, however, it has been used commercially for only the past 60 years. It is typically used by manufacturers to produce everything from plastic water bottles to sports equipment. It’s found in nearly everything, including your home water supply lines, aluminum can liners, and yes, even in some snoring mouthpieces. In fact, BPA is so common, over 10 billion pounds are produced annually for manufacturing purposes.

While still currently legal to use in the US (with the exception of baby bottles), BPA is continuously scrutinized by regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration as well as the European Food Safety Authority because of increasing evidence linking the chemical to health problems. Although the jury is still out, several studies suggest that BPA may cause endocrine system disruptions, especially at higher levels of exposure.

Oral appliances are placed inside the mouth for several hours each night and if they contain BPA, this chemical may leach into your body. While it’s still debatable whether or not BPA exposure is hazardous to one’s health, it’s best to err on the side of caution and choose a mouthpiece that does not contain BPA.

Both the manufacturer’s website and their product packaging state that the GMSS is BPA free. This is a claim that is made by only a handful of companies who manufacturer mouthpieces, GMSS being one of them. Industrywide, there seems to be a relationship between trustworthy companies who receive clearance through regulatory agencies such as the FDA and the use of BPA free material in their product. Generally speaking, most FDA cleared oral appliances are labeled as BPA free.

Does The Good Morning Snore Solution Contain Latex?

No Latex sign shows balloons with the word latex and a red line passing through Did you know that approximately 1%-2% of the general population has a latex allergy? Health care workers and individuals with conditions such as spina bifida who have undergone multiple surgeries are at greater risk of developing a latex allergy.

Symptoms of an allergy to latex typically begin within minutes of exposure and often include a runny or stuffy nose, hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing and tightness in the chest.

While most who are reading this review probably do not have a known allergy to latex, repeated exposure to latex products can lead to a latex allergy. The Department of Labor estimates that between 8%-12% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex due to constant exposure from wearing latex gloves.

For this reason, if you are going to use a tongue stabilizing device on a daily basis for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to choose a product that does not contain Latex.

This leads us to the question – “Does the Good Morning Snore Solution contain latex?”.

Looking at the manufacturer’s sales page and frequently asked question section, I was unable to immediately locate the answer to this question. After doing some further searching on their website, I found a statement within a blog post that was published in February of 2016 that answers this question. The statement reads that the GMSS “utilizes a latex-free medical grade resin”. So, to answer this question, no the GMSS does not contain latex.

Where Is The GMSS Made?

Two circles, one with the Canadian Flag one with USA Flag indicating made in USA & Canada As a consumer, I’m usually interested in the country in which my goods are made. This is especially true if the item that I’m purchasing will be used for health or personal use.  All too often we hear about toxic imported goods making their way into the hands of unsuspecting consumers.

Depending on where a product is produced, there may be little to no government oversight which sometimes leads to questionable manufacturing practices to reduce costs. For this reason, it’s a good idea to choose personal items, such as snoring mouthguards, that are manufactured in developed countries.

According to the manufacturer’s website, the GMSS is produced in the USA and Canada, two countries with strict government controls on manufacturing.

How Long Will It Last?

Spiraling clock demonstrating passage of time The GMSS is made from a medical grade silicone material that’s fairly durable and resistant to wear. How long it lasts really depends on the individual patient and how well it’s cared for.

The manufacturer suggests that the average lifespan is somewhere around 12 months. A person who properly cares for their device and does not chew on it while sleeping should expect it to last for a longer period of time.

2016 UPDATE: I’ve owned my GMSS for just under three years now and while my original GMSS is showing signs of wear, it’s still functional!  I actually upgraded my old clear GMSS to the new “refreshing blue” a few weeks ago. I still keep my original device as a backup and now use the blue one as my primary TSD.

Can the GMSS Be Used To Treat Sleep Apnea?

One question that I often receive from my readers is whether or not TSDs such as the Good Morning Snore Solution can be used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. This question is a bit complicated, primarily because the answer will vary depending on your geographical location.

Technically speaking, TSDs are considered medical devices and most countries have an agency that oversees the sale of such medical devices. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the regulatory agency.

Drawing of an airway that's blocked by the back of the tongue, causing Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by a blocked airway

Health Canada, Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and the European Commission are the medical device regulatory agencies for Canada, Australia, and the European Union respectively.

Each government agency uses its own method to classify medical devices and they set certain guidelines for the sale of each device to their citizens.

Good Morning Snore Solution is considered a Class I medical device and is available for the treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring in the following locations:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • European Union

As for the United States, the GMSS is technically considered a class II medical device and is only approved for the treatment of mild to moderate snoring and is not currently approved for the treatment of sleep apnea.

While most countries’ regulatory agencies allow the GMSS to be marketed for both snoring and sleep apnea, Mpowrx is unable to market it in the United States as a treatment for sleep apnea, simply because of different restrictions imposed by the FDA. So, while the exact same product is being sold in every country, the local government ultimately has a say in how it can be used.

Regardless of how your government classifies the GMSS, it’s always advisable to first speak with a qualified medical provider who can assess your situation, offer a proper diagnosis and explore all treatment options.

FDA Clearance

FDA Cleared 510k logo silver and blueAs mentioned, the GMSS is a class II medical device which requires clearance from the FDA prior to being sold.

According to the FDA database, Dr. Markley submitted a 510(k) summary (K081965) to the FDA in mid-2008.  By October 2008, the FDA had made a substantially equivalent determination, granting Mpowrx permission to market this device in the United States for mild to moderate snoring. At the time of this writing, the FDA website indicates that the company’s status as “Active”.

So it has been cleared by the FDA but what exactly does this mean? Here’s what the FDA has to say about cleared medical devices:

“These medical devices are ones that FDA has determined to be substantially equivalent to another legally marketed device. A premarket notification, referred to as a 510(k), must be submitted to FDA for clearance. A 510(k) is most often submitted by the medical device manufacturer.”

In other words, the FDA has determined that the GMSS is equivalent to a similar product that was previously cleared by the FDA. This gives the company the green light to bring their product to market.

Note, “FDA Cleared” should not be confused with “FDA Approved” which is typically reserved for high-risk medical devices and requires a more in-depth review process.

Does the GMSS Require A Prescription To Purchase?

Blank prescription pad with pen laying on top Depending upon where you live, a prescription may be required before purchasing the GMSS. While some countries have tighter restrictions on anti-snoring and sleep apnea products, such as MAD’s and TSD’s, others will allow you to purchase such devices off the shelf with no questions asked.

While considered a class I medical device in most countries,  the GMSS is considered a class II medical device in the United States. According to the FDA, Mandibular Advancement or Tongue Stabilizing devices such as the GMSS have greater regulatory controls to ensure safety and actually require a prescription from a medical doctor.

Luckily, obtaining a prescription from an MD may be easier than you think and doesn’t necessarily require that you to even leave your home. How is this possible? Allow me to explain.

Most (reputable) companies that sell snoring mouthpieces online are able to help you legally obtain a prescription at home, from behind your computer. Does this sound like a hassle? Actually, it’s really easy and takes about 3 minutes or less to complete. Here’s how it works:

Before being able to finalize your purchase, you are asked to complete a short online sleep health history questionnaire in which a series of health-related questions are presented. Once complete, your answers are carefully examined and a determination is made. If it’s determined that you are a good candidate for a TSD, a script will immediately be written and you will then be able to finalize your purchase of the GMSS. So, it’s as simple as correctly answering a dozen or so “yes” or “no” qualifying questions before being able to move forward with the checkout process.

Color Availability

Blue GMSS with white backgroundWhen the GMSS first came out, it was only available in clear. In late 2015 the company announced that they would be offering the GMSS in “refreshing blue” which is semi-transparent blue in color. The actual design has remained exactly the same, only a blue colorant has been added to the device.

As for availability, the manufacturer’s website states that the refreshing blue mouthpiece is currently only available for sale in the United States and Canada. Those in all other countries will receive the clear GMSS. In all likelihood, it will eventually make its way into other countries.

While this may sound like an excessive amount of money for such a simple device, it’s important to consider that a lot of money and effort goes into developing and marketing a clinically proven, FDA, ARTG, and EC cleared prescription product.

Single Vs Double Pack

When ordering the GMSS, you may choose either the single mouthpiece for $89.94 or the double pack for $129.94

There is about a 25% savings per mouthpiece when your order the double pack. For the bargain shopper, the double pack is a great choice.

But what will I do with two mouthpieces? Aside from saving a significant amount of money, here are a few reasons why one may choose the double pack instead of the single:

  • Use one, give the other away to your bedroom partner who also snores.
  • Use one, give the other away as a gift to a fellow snorer.
  • Use the extra one as a backup just in case yours becomes damaged or lost.
  • Use one, keep the other in your vehicle for overnight stays.
  • Use one and keep one to use when the first wears out. The manufacturer suggests replacing the GMSS every 12 months, although I’ve found that it tends to last much longer than this.

No Risk Return Policy And 30-Day Guarantee

100% satisfaction guarantee badge gold with black and white lettering The GMSS is offered with a 30-day Guarantee where you are able to test their product to see if it works for you. According to the company’s policy, you can return the GMSS within 30 days for a full refund of the purchase price if you are not satisfied. The return process seems very straightforward and is listed on their website.

  1. Email the company with your invoice number and reason for returning.
  2. After a customer service representative reviews your return request, you will be issued a Return Authorization (RA) number.
  3. Return the GMSS to the company along with your RA number.
  4. Once received, you will be issued a refund for the entire purchase price, not including shipping charge.

They state that you must return it in its original package.

This no-risk return policy makes it a lot easier if you are on the fence and can’t decide if this product is right for you.

What Are The Actual Customers Saying?

Thumbs up thumbs down customer reviewA quick look at the reviews from those who have tried this product shows that it is quite effective at treating snoring and is a great alternative to bulky mouthpieces that take up a lot of room in the mouth. Until recently, the MAD was the industry standard and there are many cases where people tried several different devices with failure before discovering the GMSS.  While it’s not the most fashionable solution, it delivers as promised and helps to control snoring.  Several reviewers have been using this TSD for over a year now without the need for replacement. The manufacturer does, however, suggest replacement every 12 months or so.

Quite a few denture wearers report having ordered this mouthpiece and had great results. It is one of the few stop snoring devices that can be used by those who wear dentures.

Others have found success in preventing teeth grinding while preventing snoring. Teeth grinding is nearly impossible since this product does not allow you to close your mouth all the way.

On the downside, several people reported tongue soreness and a bit of drooling the first few nights of use but this went away in almost every case. One reviewer claimed that he couldn’t keep the suction bulb stuck to his tongue the entire night.

Here are a couple reviews from actual customers:

Sources: Yelp CPAP talk

“I was extremely sceptical about the ability of this device to reduce snoring, but it’s worked for me. It took about 2 weeks to get used to it. I would put it in for a couple of hours and then take it out, increasing the time every night.” -Diana M

“I really prefer the Good Morning Snore Solution. It’s smaller, only encases the very tip of the tongue and completely prevents mouth breathing. Totally stops snores, too. Plus you cant grind your teeth when wearing it! And zero dry mouth! ” -Babytalk

My Personal Experience With The GMSS

How Do I Measure Effectiveness?

When testing out a new snoring mouthpiece, I typically spend two weeks or more using the product to ensure long-term comfort and effectiveness. There are three indicators that I use to assess the effectiveness of a mouthpiece:

  1. How I feel in the morning
  2. My bed partner’s observation of my snoring
  3. Smartphone sound recording app

Man waking up refreshed. Sitting on edge of bed stretching arms out.

The first consideration, how I feel in the morning, is perhaps the most tell-tale indicator of whether or not a mouthpiece is effective. First, it’s necessary to understand that both snoring and sleep apnea are caused by a narrowed airway. The airway can become restricted, tissues flap against each other (snoring) and in some cases the airway will completely collapse, resulting in apnea. In the event that the airway collapses, your body will instinctively cause you to awaken in order to capture your breath. A sleep-awake cycle occurs all throughout the night and you are usually completely unaware of what is going on. In many cases, the individual will wake up over a dozen times each hour throughout the night and not even know that this is occurring. For this reason, you may wake up feeling tired, even if you sleep for 8, 9, or even 10 hours.

The second way that I determine effectiveness is what I like to call “the wife test”. While I’m a heavy snorer, my wife also occasionally snores. Fortunately for me, I almost always fall asleep first and as a heavy sleeper, my wife’s snoring rarely bothers me. While great news for me, she is often forced to lay awake for several minutes or sometimes hours each night nudging me, trying to stop my snoring. Trust me, if a mouthpiece that I try is not effective, my wife will be the first one to tell me all about it in the morning.

Finally, the third way that I am able to tell if I am snoring is by simply setting up a sound recorder. There are numerous smartphone sound recording apps to choose from, some are even made specifically for capturing and evaluating the sound of snoring. For me, I use a simple free sound recording app.  While I’m sure that other apps offer more bells and whistles, I try to keep things simple, as this has always worked well for me. I use an app that allows me to adjust the microphone sensitivity so that it doesn’t pick up sound from my wife. Also, the app that I use only records when sound is present and remains off when silent. This is helpful because I usually only have to listen to a few minutes of the recording instead of 8 hours.

Before going to bed, I start the recording and then lay the phone next to my pillow on the opposite side that my wife sleeps on. Upon rising in the morning, I play back the recording and listen to see just how bad my snoring was. If I wake up and there are 6 hours of recorded sound, I’m immediately able to tell that the device is not working.

The Arrival

When I first saw this anti-snoring device it seemed a bit strange and I admit that I was a bit skeptical. After all, this thing resembles a pacifier and I really didn’t understand exactly how it worked. So, I ordered one and didn’t know what to expect.

After answering a few “yes” or “no” questions, my order was approved and it shipped the next day with tracking information. While the company is based out of Canada, I found out that they actually have a fulfillment center in the US. Four days after placing my order, it arrived at my doorstep. This was a relief as receiving a package from outside of the US can sometimes take weeks if held up in customs.

The GMSS arrived neatly contained inside of a plastic clamshell package. Inside, there was one device, the instructions, and a Polident denture tablet which I used to clean the GMSS before use. The instructions were straightforward and took just a couple of minutes to read over.

Since it requires no fitting or trimming, it was ready to use straight out of the box. I dropped a tablet into a cup of cold water and then submerged the device for 10 minutes before allowing it to dry on a paper towel for several hours before putting it to use.

Putting The GMSS To The Test

Blue Good Morning Snore on black background

My Good Morning Snore Solution

Before going to bed I simply squeezed the bulb, stuck out my tongue, and let the suction naturally pull my tongue in. For the first night, I let out as much air as possible to ensure that it didn’t fall off of my tongue.

The next morning I woke up and felt refreshed and well rested. I know from past experiences that this was a good indication that the device had worked. The GMSS was still well stuck to the end of my tongue and I had to squeeze and maneuver it off.  I felt a bit of soreness after removing it, but this eventually dissipated after about 30 minutes.

I took a look at my phone and saw 45 minutes of sound was recorded from overnight. While I waited for my wife to wake up, I listened to the recording and was surprised to hear that not a single snoring sound exited my mouth. The captured recording was simply the sound of me breathing into the microphone at 4:00 am when I must have rolled over and my face landed right on top of my phone.  My breathing sounded very smooth both inhaling and exhaling. No snoring, pauses, or throat clearing sound.

Later, when my wife woke up, I learned that she stayed awake reading for 2 hours after I had fallen asleep and didn’t hear a sound. This was very encouraging to hear and I was now excited to continue using it for the next two weeks.

The second night I followed the same procedure except I increased the sound recording sensitivity to ensure that I wasn’t missing anything. With the GMSS in use and the recording on, I quickly fell asleep.

Upon rising the next day, I felt great once again, the only audio that I captured was 1.5 hours of the sound of smooth breathing and once again it had passed the wife test. Unfortunately, I had once again experienced some soreness for the first few minutes of the day.

While it was working well, my only complaint was that it made the tip of my tongue sore in the morning. I had checked the company’s website and they suggested not squeezing all of the air out which reduces the suction and should relieve some of the tongue tenderness.

Before going to bed for the third night, I had followed this advice.

I woke up for the third morning feeling well rested and had experienced another soundless night. The GMSS was still secured to my tongue, however, this time I did not experience the soreness that I had experienced the first two night. Great, the suggestion had worked! I simply had it too tight on the tip of my tongue.

After the third night, everything was smooth sailing. The device continued to work night after night for the next eleven days and the tenderness on the tip of my tongue had never returned.

Using it had quickly become routine and easy to keep up with. I simply placed the unit on the end of my tongue before going to bed, removed and cleaned it in the morning and allowed it to air dry.  I had really grown to like the fact that it’s so compact yet still extremely effective.

In the end, I was no longer a skeptic but rather a believer. Although completely different than any other snoring mouthpiece that I had tried in the past, it really does work well! Although it seemed sort of odd at first, I soon became accustomed to wearing it.

2016 UPDATE: After buying my very first snoring mouthpiece, I was simply amazed by how these things worked and wanted to help other snorers. Three years ago I started to test every product that I was able to get my hands on and write an in-depth review.  Since then, I have reviewed over 2 dozen snoring mouthpieces and shared my opinion on each. Over the years, I’ve received multiple emails from people who thanked me for introducing them to the GMSS. Three years and many mouthpieces later, the Good Morning Snore Solution has remained an all-time favorite that I still use today.

Product Recommendation

Three men in suites each holding up the number 10 indicating a perfect 10 score

After learning about the GMSS and then putting it to the test, it’s quite clear that this product is hands-down one of the best snoring mouthpieces on the market.

Having an actual dentist behind it increases credibility and the fact that it is clinically proven, BPA free, latex free, made in the USA and cleared by the FDA shows that the company has gone to great lengths to ensure that you are receiving a safe and reliable product. With so many unregulated and untested snoring mouthpieces making an appearance on the market today, it’s important to consider where your mouthpiece comes from and whether or not it’s safe to use.  There are a disturbing amount of products on the market that are made of questionable materials and have not been tested by a government regulatory agency such as the FDA. No matter which product you choose, always ensure that it has been cleared by the FDA or a similar regulatory agency.

While on the higher end of the price scale, this is something that should be expected with any new and innovative product in the industry. It takes a lot of capital to properly launch a prescription medical device.

Overall, the Good Morning Snore Solution is a less cumbersome alternative to the MAD. Innovative, comfortable and very effective are three words that I would use to describe the GMSS. If not for the higher cost, I would rate this product at five stars.

My experience using the SnoreRx

Animation of person holding magnifying glass over word reviewI recently had a chance to review the new updated SnoreRx.  The redesigned version addresses the issue of being too bulky by reducing the overall size of the mouthpiece, especially in the molar area.

After making improvements to the original design, the manufacturer now claims to be the undisputed best-in-class stop-snoring mouthpiece. Does it really stand up to these claims? I put the new SnoreRx to the test and documented the results along the way.

The initial fitting process

The SnoreRx arrived neatly packed in a small box and came complete with instructions. In order to fit this mouthpiece, you will need the following materials:

  • The device
  • A mug of boiling hot water
  • A mug of cold water
  • Tongs to retrieve your mouthpiece
  • A stopwatch

Here are the steps involved in fitting the device:

  1. Fill a mug with boiling hot water. Carefully drop the device in and allow to rest for 90 seconds.
  2. Remove the SnoreRx using a pair of tongs and give it a quick dip into a mug filled with cold water for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Open wide and place the entire unit into your mouth with the “UPPER” marking facing up. Bite down and hold for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove the mouthguard and immediately drop it into cold water. Leave for 60 seconds.
  5. Remove from cold water and check the fit
  6. Try the device for a night. If snoring sounds continue, adjust the lower tray setting by squeezing the sides and then moving the tray. (See video below.)

I found the fitting process to be rather simple, taking less than 5 minutes total. I was able to achieve a close fit on my first attempt. The instructions state that you can try up to 3 times if you don’t have success the first time. Keep in mind that heating and cooling the device more than 3 times can weaken the material and render it useless.

Immediately after taking the impression I adjusted the setting to 5 mm before trying it out the first night.

How did it work?

Illustration of person question how it workedI’ve been working the overnight shift lately so this gave my wife the perfect opportunity to observe my snoring habits. While asleep she checked in throughout the first night (her day) and did not hear a single sound. Instant success!

Upon rising, I noticed a bit of tenderness in my jaw from being stretched overnight. Before going to bed the following night, I reduced the advancement by 1 mm to 4 mm. This position felt more natural and comfortable. After another night of heavy sleeping, my wife reported absolutely no snoring sounds coming from the bedroom. In the morning my jaw was no longer tender and the snoring was gone.

I decided to test the device for an additional 6 nights and had experienced success night after night. Overall it was incredibly effective and comfortable to wear.

Very few of its kind

Line up of six people one standing out in redThe SnoreRx is a MAD that actually allows advancement adjustment. Most devices move the jaw forward to a position that may or may not be comfortable or effective. This device allows forward adjustments up to 10mm which is nearly 1/2″. The manufacturer recommends that you begin using the device in the 4mm-5mm setting range before making any adjustments for a more comfortable fit.

In addition to the incremental forward adjustments feature, you are also able to create a custom mold that conforms to the shape of your teeth. The SnoreRx offers similar boil-and-bite technology commonly found with other oral appliances. Simply drop the device in boiling water for 60 seconds, remove and cool slightly then take an impression of the teeth by biting down. Have a bowl of ice water handy to drop it in once formed.

The newer SnoreRx features a thin inner frame that is both rigid and durable. The unique frame allows you to make small incremental tray adjustments by “ratcheting” it forward and back.

Longevity is also a selling feature that several companies rarely talk about. This product is created from a medical-grade copolymer, making it both durable and long-lasting. They claim that one should expect it to last anywhere from 12 to 15 months. Several similar products last less than a year and often only 4-6 months. Since some non-prescription MAD’s are relatively expensive, this is an important factor that one should take into consideration.

How much is it?

Price tag under magnifying glassExpect to pay a bit more for a product that offers so many features. The SnoreRx currently retails for $99.00 plus $6.95 for standard United States Postal Service shipping.  The overall cost shipped to your door comes to around $106.00.

FDA cleared, BPA Free

FDA letter with red CLEARED stamped on topOne consideration that should be examined when shopping around for a MAD is whether or not it’s FDA-cleared and BPA-free.

Devices such as the SnoreRx are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as a class II medical device. Prior to selling any such device, a manufacturer is required to obtain this FDA clearance. In doing so, the government is ensuring consumer safety. Keep in mind, that not all products that are being sold in the United States are FDA-cleared.

Also, some mouthpieces (often less expensive) may contain a controversial harmful toxic chemical known as BPA.

The manufacturer of the SnoreRx claims that their product is both FDA-cleared and BPA-free. After checking the FDA database, I was able to confirm that it was cleared in Nov 2011 and is currently registered.

Consumer feedback

Hand drawing the word Feedback with blue marker An overwhelming majority of people who have tried this product agree that it is comfortable and easy to use. Most experience immediate results and are happy with their purchase.

On the other hand, there are some complaints that have also surfaced online. The most common complaint has to do with shipping and billing. In older online reviews predating 2015, some individuals with smaller mouths found it to be too large and difficult to keep in their mouth overnight although this complaint seems to have been resolved with the latest updated version that was released in 2015. Others have reported oral discomfort for the first 2-5 days of use. This is typical of most devices and should eventually disappear.

Should I buy SnoreRx or try something else?

Green Check MarkThere is no doubt that this stop snoring device is well designed and functional but does this mean you should hand over the $106.00 and give it a try?

The SnoreRx is one of the few MAD’s available without a prescription which allows you to adjust the position of your lower jaw. This combined with the custom boil and bite feature allows for a better fit when compared to other products on the market. Its design mimics oral appliances that are available from a dentist with a prescription. Most MAD’s that are prescribed are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea and should not be confused with this product and other OTC stops snoring products.

As for the inventor and his credentials, there is very little information available. There are however several medical professionals who support this product which gives it credibility.

According to the companies website, the SnoreRx is endorsed by Dr. Robert Lebby of Laguna Beach, CA who is board certified in sleep medicine. Dr. Lebby is quoted saying the following:

“Intraoral appliances, or mouthguards, that can be micro calibrated to the needs of the patient have a proven history of effectiveness for treating snoring and sleep apnea.”

The SnoreRx is also endorsed by Dr. Robert  L. Mandell a periodontist  in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts who is quoted saying:

“The patented Micro-Fit feature allows for a custom precise fit in 1mm increments to meet the needs of the individual patient. Only SnoreRx offers this critical patented feature. I would never prescribe an oral appliance that did not offer this.”

The price appears to be fair considering the complexity of its construction and its ability to last for a long time in comparison to other MAD’s that are available.

I was very impressed with the quality and the ease of use. It’s the only custom-molded MAD on the market that can be adjusted over and over with no tools required. It’s well constructed and should easily last 12-15 months as recommended by the manufacturer.

After closely examining the SnoreRx myself and then comparing this information to what actual customers are saying, The SnoreRx receives my approval on the basis of comfort, adjustability, and durability.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • One of the only adjustable MAD’s available online
  • Can adjust in 1 mm increments up to 10 mm
  • Large breather hole at the front
  • Newly redesigned and thinner than previous model
  • Endorsed by medical professionals
  • FDA cleared & BPA free
  • 12-15 month lifespan
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • May cause jaw tenderness at first

Product features and claims

zQuiet in two sizes with storage case ZQuiet is a Mandibular Advancement Device that is constructed of a soft rubber-like material. It is used to hold the lower jaw forward in order to widen the airway, allowing air to move freely and prevent a restriction in flow. The actual material used in the construction is a thermoplastic elastomer which contains no BPA’s nor latex.  It functions similarly to other MAD devices on the market with the exception of the fact that it is hinged at the jaw (named “living hinge” technology by the manufacturer). This allows free movement of the mouth, allowing you to speak and even enables you to take a sip of water without removing the device. This open design is essential for those who breathe through their mouth while sleeping.

According to the manufacturer, this device is expected to last for several months when used on a regular basis.

This MAD can be used right out of the box although some customization may be required in order to achieve optimal performance.

The zQuiet is offered on a 30-day trial basis, meaning that if you can give it a try before committing to the full asking price.

The trial cost is $19.90, which includes shipping and processing.

Meet the creators

In 2008, couple Dan and Katrina Webster developed the ZQuiet snoring mouthpiece in order to solve a common problem that they both shared – snoring.

Their company, Sleep Well LLC was registered with the state of Vermont in 2008. In order to gain some credibility, they recruited Avery Lieberman, DDS who for more than 20 years has worked in the sleep medicine field. While in practice, his focus was on sleep apnea, snoring and oral appliances. Lieberman helped Dan and Katrina to develop the ZQuiet.

My Experience using the ZQuiet

In the past, I have tried out several boil and bite mouthguard type devices in an attempt to treat my snoring. While just about every product that I have tried did in fact work, I was excited to try out the ZQuiet because it appeared to be much thinner than your typical self-fitted boil and bite mouthguard. I placed an order on their website and received my package in the mail containing my new device. From the time that I ordered it until it arrived in the mail took about 3 days, so it was reasonably fast.

As I unpacked it the first thing that I noticed was that as suspected, it was in fact much thinner and more compact in comparison to the traditional thicker mouthguard style devices that I have tried in the past. After glancing over the instructions I gave it a quick bath using dish soap and warm tap water. The warm water seemed to relax the spring action of the hinges a bit and gave it a softer feel.

I popped the device into my mouth and it seemed to fit naturally and was quite comfortable. The instructions do say that you can use a small pair of scissors to trim any extra material if needed but this was not necessary for me. I left it in for a few minutes to get a feel for it and started to notice drool coming out of the side of my mouth. Having used a mouthpiece before, I understood that this usually happened whenever introducing a new device into your mouth.

Night one

Illustration of man snoring and woman covering earsBefore going to bed I placed the ZQuiet into my mouth and laid down. The familiar feeling of salivation began but soon stopped after leaving it in for a few minutes. After getting over the excessive salivation it was nearly effortless to wear. I was able to close my mouth almost all the way with the exception of a couple of millimeters due to the airflow posts. The overall thickness was much less distracting in comparison to other thicker units that I have tried.

Now it was time for the trial with my wife being the judge. She’s a night owl and typically stays up a couple hours past my bedtime. By the time that she’s ready to go to bed, I am usually snoring like a freight train. She listened as I fell asleep and… guess what? This small device seemed to have alleviated my snoring.

The next morning I woke up and removed the device from my mouth. My lower jaw had an undeniable sore feeling as if it were held forward for the entire night. In reality, that’s exactly what all mandibular advancement device do. They hold the lower jaw forward which tightens the muscles in your throat and keeps the airway clear. I knew from past experience that this feeling usually goes away.

In the morning I gave my mouthpiece a rubdown with dish soap and then rinsed it off with warm water. The manufacturer suggests that you store it flat in the provided case so this is what I did after allowing it to dry.

Night two

Man laying on pillow sleeping with a smileIt was time for round two and with good results the first night I was excited to replicate my experience. Once again I rinsed it off under warm tap water and then placed it into my mouth before going to bed. This time there was there wasn’t much of a salivation issue so that was good.

Without hesitation, I fell asleep and once again received a positive report from my wife in the morning.

The morning time soreness feeling was still there and lasted a couple hours after removing it.

Twelve more nights of soundless sleep

The word success with arrow pointing upward For the next 12 nights, I used the ZQuiet with fantastic results. After a total of 2 weeks of quiet snoring, I have concluded that it does, in fact, work on a long-term basis. After day 3 or 4 the morning time soreness diminished and eventually became unnoticeable. Also, the drooling problem went away after a couple of night. I slept like a rock and my wife was also satisfied with the results as she was also able to sleep.

Overall my experience was better than average in comparison to other devices that I have tried in the past.

It worked comfortably right out of the box and did not need to be heated in boiling water. The hinged joint was a great feature which made it feel “natural” and allowed me to breathe through my mouth while allowing my jaw to move freely. I really enjoyed the fact that it’s compact and doesn’t make you feel like there is a rubber sanding block in your mouth.

“ZQuiet has worked for me for about a month. This little gem should have been around many years ago. thanks for a fine product.” – Chris Rasmussen  (ZQuiet Facebook)

“Three weeks ago, my husband tried ZQuiet for the first time. It took him 4 nights to get used to the mouthpiece being in his mouth. Finally and reluctantly after a week of him using ZQuiet, I agreed to try sleeping in the same room with him. With much anxiety I fell asleep with him next to me. Unbelievably, we slept all night and I didn’t hear him snore at all. We have been sleeping in the same room every night since.” – Carrie Parker

“Living Hinge” makes wearing the ZQuiet more comfortable

With so many antisnoring devices available on the market, it comes down to functionality, unique features, safety, and cost.

From my own findings, I was able to confirm several reports of the ZQuiet working on the first night and every night thereafter. Because there is no initial fitting process required I simply rinsed it off under hot tap water and put it to use immediately. This product did an excellent job of treating my loud snoring that often keeps my wife up at night.

Most traditional boil and bite style oral appliances place your jaw in the forward fixed position, preventing you from speaking or drinking.  The ZQuiet addresses this issue with their “living hinge” technology. The airflow posts prevent the device from completely closing which is an important feature often overlooked by those who have a tendency to breathe through their mouth while sleeping.

Being made from a very soft rubber-like material makes it easy on the gums preventing irritation. Also, there are no sharp edges to poke at the inside of your mouth. It fits comfortably around your teeth and features a compact design that is amazingly effective.

Chart comparing zquiet to other mouthpiecesSafety should be a high priority for anyone shopping for a snoring mouthguard. The manufactures of the ZQuiet have taken all of the necessary steps in order to ensure that their product is safe to use. Being regulated by the FDA and also latex and BPA free gives them a competitive advantage over other products that could be made of questionable materials which may contain harmful toxins. There is an alarming number of mouthguard product being sold that do not meet these requirements.

The total cost comes to around $100 which is the average price one should expect to pay for a quality OTC oral appliance. There are numerous other devices available that sell for nearly half this cost, however, they are almost always your simple boil and bite mouthguard style units which are fairly thick and take up quite a bit of room in your mouth. ZQuiet has covered all of their bases with a unique and safe product that performs well and lives up to its expectations. While you may be thinking “$100 for a simple piece of plastic” the fact that it’s one of a kind, safe and effective makes it worth its weight in gold.

Having all of these features and seeing the ZQuiet in action has convinced me that it is perhaps the best OTC mandibular advancement device on the market today. Considering all factors, the ZQuiet gets my personal recommendation. It is important to keep in mind that your results may vary.

So what’s the big deal with frequent snoring? Many would say that the main problem with snoring is that it keeps other awake. Whiles this is true, a more dangerous reason comes down to the health issues that are associated with regular snoring. The act of snoring could stem from a sleep disorder known as sleep apnea. It is very important to remember that not all who snore have sleep apnea and those with sleep apnea do not always snore. This is why it is advisable to visit your doctor to determine if your snoring is a result of a more serious medical condition. Before visiting, keep a sleep journal noting how often your snoring occurs and under what conditions. Also, document your energy levels throughout the day and other factors such as mood changes. If possible, have partner observe you while sleeping, taking note of pauses in breathing or gasps for air.

There are several factors which increase the likelihood of snoring. Often times, issues can be resolved by taking action to improve your health. Other times, one is genetically predisposed and unable to help their self.

Did you snore during this time period? If the answer is yes then your snoring may be due to your current state of being overweight. Keep in mind that age may also be a factor because as we get older, we lose muscle tone in our airways.

Snoring is prevalent in overweight people as fatty tissues build up around the neck, causing a restriction in the airway. As you lose weight, these fatty tissues begin to vanish, opening up the airway that was once obstructed by fat. As a general rule of thumb, women should keep their neck size under 16 ” while men should keep it under 17″.

Lay off the alcohol and sedatives

avoid alcohol snoringIf you enjoy a few alcoholic beverages or take sedatives before going to bed, this may be a cause or be contributing factor to your snoring.  Both are widely known to relax the tongue and muscles in the throat, causing them to become obstructed or even collapse while drawing air in as we sleep. If you drink, ensure that you consume your last beverage 4 to 5 hours prior to going to bed and don’t overdo it. Also, be sure to include food along with your beverage of choice. This can help to lessen the effects of the alcohol. Limit your prescription medications to daytime use if possible.

Change your sleeping position

sleep on side and snoringThe reason why you snore may be as simple as the position in which you sleep. Sleeping on the back sometimes causes the uvula (the soft thing that dangles in the back of your throat) and soft palate to sag down and block your airway. The simple solution: adjust your sleeping position. Sleeping on the side is an easy way to help prevent this from happening.

What if you are accustom to sleeping on your back? Some suggest that taping tennis balls to you pajamas to prevent rollover may be the solution. While many find this uncomfortable, it may be worth a try if have a difficult time staying off your back.
