Snore Free Now top view

SnoreFreeNow was developed and used by 2 California dentist

Snore Free Now is a simple Mandibular Advancement Device, commonly referred to as a “snoring mouthguard” by the manufacturer. Since 1996 it has been used by dentist and is now available to the general public. Its sole purpose is to treat snoring and is not intended to treat sleep apnea, although some have had success doing so under the supervision of their doctor.

The mouthpiece is a one-piece design that is relatively simple and straightforward. There are a few similar products on the market but this one is not only FDA approved but also has unique features such as a long oval shaped breathing hole in the front that allows for easy breathing through the mouth.

When you purchase this product it is sold as a kit which includes the actual mouth guard, fitting handle, cleaning solution and carrying case. Upon arrival, it comes neatly assembled in retail packaging. It is currently being sold by IFMC, Inc who markets and sells this product worldwide.

Insertion tool used to fit Snorefree Mouthguard

Insertion tool used to fit Snorefree Mouthguard

Since is it constructed of BPA free Thermoplastic Elvax, it can be fitted by heating the material and taking an impression. The manufacturer suggests:

  • Insert the plastic handle into the breather hole
  • Boil a pot of water, remove from heat source and submerge for 25 seconds or more. Do not exceed more than 50 seconds as doing so will damage the material, rendering it unusable.
  • Briefly dip the device into ice cold water for 2-3 seconds
  • Insert into your mouth as described in the instructions. Firmly bite down while creating negative pressure in your mouth by sucking in. Ensure that your lower jaw is in the forward “advanced” position. This is the key to creating a successful piece.
  • Remove and place in ice cold water for 1 minute.
  • Repeat if you are not satisfied with the results.

It is important that you remember to use the provided handle. The handle also acts as a spacer to keep the air hole open during the molding process.

Who’s behind the SnoreFree?

Person behind SnoreFree nowThe website states that the Snore Free Now was developed by a “famous dentist” yet fails to provide any indication of who this may be. Buried on their website there is a mention of two Californian dentists who were the developers and had success using this particular device on their patients.

Upon further investigation, it is believed that the two dentists are Scott E. Feldman DDS and Norman Alan Shapiro DDS, both of Woodland Hills, CA. They seem to have worked together in a practice at one time but now have practiced just a couple miles from each other in Woodland Hills.

Cost

Money bag with dollar signProfessionally fitted snoring mouthguards can cost several hundred dollars. The SnoreFree can be purchased for $49.99 and includes everything that you need to get started – the mouthpiece, cleaning solution, storage case and an insertion tool. Once you purchase the essentials, you can buy the actual device in a three pack for $39.99 or $13.33 each. There are currently no shipping charges when you buy directly from the manufacturer.

Since the materials that are used to produce it must be soft enough to be comfortable, this compromises the length of time in which the device lasts. The manufacturer suggests that you replace every three months for this reason. By purchasing the kit plus a three pack, it should last for the first year. Each year after you can simply buy the 3 pack and save.

Customer reviews and criticism

Satisfaction surveySeveral people have reviewed this product and in general, it seems to be an effective device when it comes to preventing snoring. The fitting process is simple and only takes a few minutes but once it has been properly customized this device is as comfortable as they come.

As with almost all MAD devices, this one does take some getting used to and may cause a bit of discomfort when initially put to use. Some report side effects of teeth, gum or jaw soreness, and excess drooling which will typically go away after a few days.

Here’s what a few reviewers from Skymall had to say:

“My sleep is so much more restful. My partner is really happy. There is a small sound of the breath coming in and out of my mouth as I sleep, but it is hardly noticeable and not annoying at all.” – kyajpn

“I had been ready to return it after the first try but due to desperate times, thought I would re-do it for one more try. It was a much better fit and I have used it successfully for the last two nights.” – Mindy

“It takes a bit of getting used to, but this thing really does work. I am so impressed I am ordering a second one as a back up.” -Texgator

Our take on the SnoreFreeNow

Green Check MarkThe SnoreFreeNow has been in use for nearly 2 decades now but has only recently been sold to the general public. It was created by 2 actual dentists who used this product in their practice.

The product is FDA approved, BPA free and made in the United States. Unfortunately, there are several others out there who are selling products sourced from China among other countries and are not cleared by the FDA.

Overall, the design is similar to other MAD’s yet this one offers a breathing hole which is great for anyone who has a difficult time breathing through their nose.

On the downside, the manufacturer suggests that you should only expect 3 months of use before having to replace the device. This is far below the average life expectancy compared to similar devices.

All around the SnoreFree Now has proven itself as a useful product. As with any other product it has its setbacks which include a short lifespan. Although they do not offer a money back guaranty, you may want to give it a try because it is one of the less expensive options available. If you are looking for a cheap short-term anti-snoring device this could be an alternative to a higher quality, more expensive product. If the SnoreFree (or any other Mandibular Advancement Device) does, in fact, stop your snoring, I would recommend upgrading to a better quality device that lasts longer.

There are several other choices available that last much longer and perform just as well. One such product that I would recommend is the Zquiet. It requires no special fitting that involves putting a boiling hot mouthpiece into your mouth. It worked very well to control my snoring and unlike the SnoreFree and other boil and bite devices, it isn’t a space hog inside your mouth. Best of all, it’s only $10 more than the SnoreFree device and lasts several months longer. You can read my complete product analysis of the Zquiet if you would like more information.

Which mouthpiece should I buy?

The anti-snoring mouthpiece is one of the most highly effective stop snoring solutions available. With over 100 different products to choose from, deciding which one to buy can be challenging.

As a snorer and product reviewer, I have tried many of these devices and created a list of recommended devices that will help to make this decision much easier.

Product design and specifications

SomnoGuard AP with adjustment screw

The SomnoGuard AP can be adjusted up to 10mm

The SomnoGuard AP is a boil and bite mandibular advancement device that is designed and produced by a German company by the name of Tomed. This MAD is commonly fitted by a doctor or dentist but can be ordered from several online resellers and fitted in your home. Note, although the SomnoGuard AP has been approved by the FDA, it is currently unavailable for purchase online in the United States. In all likelihood, this will change in the near future as several related companies have taken their products to US markets, making them available to anyone without a prescription.

Dr. Winfried Toussaint is the creator of this device that has been used by medical professionals in the US for 16 years now. Dr. Toussaint, a 20 year MD who practices natural medicine in Bensheim developed this product to solve his own sleep apnea problem.

Fitting the SomnoGuard

Somnoguard fully extended side viewThe fitting process is a bit more complicated than most boil and bite devices because it involves multiple steps. Here are the steps used to properly fit the device.

  1. Remove the upper tray from the packaging and submerge in hot water for 3 minutes, this will make it moldable.
  2. Allow cooling briefly before fitting over upper teeth. Simply press the guard against the teeth. Do not bite down.
  3. Remove after a few seconds, place in cold water and trim off any excess material
  4. Heat lower piece in boiling hot water for 3 minutes. Attach to upper piece and place into the mouth. Apply pressure with the jaw. Remove and trim.
  5. Repeat step 4 once again with the upper piece.
  6. Fit together and make advancement adjustments if necessary

How is it different?

School of gold fish with one different There are seven attributes that set this device apart from other mandibular advancement devices that are used for sleep apnea and snoring.

  • It allows for approximately 10mm of adjustment. This means that it can accommodate people who have an extreme overbite or under-bite. By adjusting the stainless steel screw, the lower portion pushes against the upper portion to create the desired advancement
  • The two-piece design can be easily taken apart for cleaning purposes. It is essential to separate the two pieces to ensure a good cleaning.
  • SomnoGuard allows for lateral (side to side) movement which is an important feature that maximizes comfort.
  • When fitted, the mouthpiece is clear and less noticeable than several others.
  • Developed by a seasoned doctor, cleared by the FDA, and clinically tested. The launch of this product has been carefully planned and executed.
  • Breathing holes are built in and a necessary feature that others often leave out. Other MAD’s often receive bad reviews from people who are unable to breathe through their nose and require air ports in their mouthpieces. This problem has been solved with the SomnoGuard.
  • This device lasts 18 months or longer. This is considerably longer than most on the market today.

Treatment of sleep apnea

In most cases, mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea can be treated with this device. However, it is very important that you use it under the supervision of your doctor. Self-treating without a doctor can be dangerous and is not recommended.

How much does it cost?

US dollars arranged in a pileSeveral websites sell this device for around $150 plus the cost of shipping. In this case, shipping typically runs between $7.50 and $10.00. You can also purchase it through your doctor or dentist. This may be a good option for those who do not feel comfortable fitting their own piece or cannot purchase on outright. (such as US residence)

Comparing the price of this unit to similar ones, it is slightly more costly than comparable units. Part of the additional cost obviously goes toward research, development, clinical trials, advertising, and licensing. Unfortunately, these factors combine will raise the price of any product.

What are the reviewer saying?

Two hands, one with thumbs up and other with thumbs downIt is not surprising that most who have tried this agree that it does, in fact, work as promised. However, those who are heavy snorers or have a severe case of sleep apnea saw little to no relief with this product. For the most part, those who have tried it are satisfied. Several have commented that the SomnoGuard AP is hands down the best MAD that they have ever tried. Here are a few reviews from actual customers. Source: British Snoring Association

“This did almost totally stop my snoring, but I found it impossible to keep comfortably in my mouth. I have a small mouth and it was terribly uncomfortable so I couldn’t keep it in all night.” -Lorrie Marchington

“According to my boyfriend, even when my nose is really blocked up, I don’t snore, I just make a slightly heavier breathing noise than normal.” -Emily Newton

” I bought this product and it is brilliant. I no longer snore and not once have we spent a night apart since wearing it.” -Gabrielle

A few individuals also suggested that the device should be made into a one piece because it has a tendency to come apart while sleeping. There were only a couple reviewers who said that the product did not work for them at all.

Expert suggestion

Decision dice with yes, no, and maybe shown Let’s face it, there are a lot of MAD’s on the market today which means that making a decision is more difficult than ever. Fortunately, with this product, the decision has been made easy. While it may be somewhat difficult for the average user to fit, this is made up for by so many outstanding qualities.

Having the ability to adjust the unit forward up to 10mm is something that very few devices offer and the breathing holes are a must that is often overlooked.

This product has been around for several years now and was developed by a German doctor who shows transparency by publicly displaying his name next to the SomnoGuard. His company, Tomed has actually taken the time to conduct clinical studies and also cleared the device with the FDA. This is uncommon as competing products are often sold without FDA clearance and with no studies proving their effectiveness.

As for improvement, a custom lab mold would be more desirable than the boil and bite although this method is still effective.

I would give the SomnoGuard a try if you have the means to afford this oral appliance and live in a country that permits you to purchase one without a prescription. I do know that the SomnoGuard cannot be purchased inside the US without a prescription. There is, however, an alternative device that has been gaining a lot of popularity in the past couple of years. The Good Morning Snore Solution was developed by a Canadian dentist by the name of Dr. Leslie Dort. It has also been clinically proven to work. In the snoring mouthguard industry, clinical studies are rarely conducted on new products because of the high cost of doing so.

I’ve tried the GMSS and can tell you that it does indeed work. Take a look at my post for all the details including my review video.

One of the best features offered by the GMSS is the ability to control your snoring without putting a massive device inside your entire mouth. It works using a different principle (tongue stabilizing) that has proven to be just as effective as traditional mandibular advancement devices.  Best of all, they last a long time and cost less than the SomnoGuard.

SleepPro Easifit general information

SleepPro Easifit front viewDeveloped by MEDiTAS Ltd, the SleepPro has three available versions – Easifit, Contour, and custom. During this review, we will be discussing the Easifit which is the less expensive alternative to the custom and SFA.

The Easifit version is a mandibular advancement device that works like several other MAD’s by holding the lower jaw just beyond the upper. This in effect pulls forward loose fat and muscles, freeing up previously blocked airways. This technique to prevent snoring has been used for several years now but has only recently gained popularity in the United States. In fact,  according to the companies website, 63% of the companies sales currently originate in the US followed by 25% in Australia. The remaining 13% of their sales come from other countries.

The company behind SleepPro is based out of Winchester, United Kingdom and has been conducting business since 1992 as a medical supply company, while the SleepPro line has been produced and distributed since 1998. The companies primary focus is to offer affordable oral appliances to help others with their snoring problems.

Whats different about the SleepPro?

If you have been shopping around, you have likely noticed that there are several similar devices available on the market. Many of these devices are created using a thermoplastic, medical grade silicone, or similar material. When these materials are heated, they become pliable and can be stretched and formed into a different shape. Since the process of reshaping typically involves dropping the device in hot water for a few seconds, inserting into the mouth and biting down, they are often referred to as boil and bite devices.  The SleepPro is no different than any other in this aspect.

Ability to breath freely

The unique design and breathing hole feature are what differentiates this oral appliance from all others. While some manufacturers design their device with a small breather hole or more commonly, no breather hole at all, the SleepPro clearly understands the need for such a feature and offers two large air holes which make breathing very easy for those who have nasal issues.

Man breathing through straw, showing difficulty breathing with some snoring mouthpieces

Other devices restrict breathing, like breathing through a straw

Let’s face it, quite a few people find breathing through their nose difficult due to blockages from issues such as a deviated septum, inflammation, and swelling, allergies or simply a cold. Breathing through the nose while sleeping can be not only challenging but almost impossible for some. As a sinus suffer, I can attest to this and understand that there are several others out there with similar issues who also snore while sleeping.

There are a few available mouthpieces that offer one small hole which creates a concentrated stream of air that often dries out the throat. These devices can also severely restrict breathing by forcing a large volume of air through such a small hole. Think about it like trying to breathe through a small straw. The SleepPro has 2 large ports that make breathing through the mouth much easier. This can be compared to breathing through two extra large straws. See how this can be much easier?

Originator, not an imitator

While not the first ever to produce a mold-able mouth guard style MAD, SleepPro has been at it for more than 15 years. The snoring remedies industry has recently seen an explosion in the United States as an estimated 30% – 50% of Americans snore. An increase in demand has caused an overwhelming response and dozens of companies have responded by creating cheap imitations, often produced using questionable materials. The SleepPro has a long history that has stood the test of time, giving it credibility and trust.

Cost

Green dollar signIf ordered directly from their website, the cost is $49.99 + $10.25 shipping. You have the option to include a second device for only $20 more. Ordering two will significantly reduce the overall cost and is typically a good decision as these mouth guards will have to be replaced after several months.

My personal experience using the SleepPro

I tried out the Sleeppro for two and recorded my results along the way. The initial fitting process was simple and can be seen in my video below. Here is the process that I used to fit my mouth guard:

  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil on the stove. Pour the water into a mug and allow it to cool for about a minute.
  • Submerge the mouthpiece under the hot water for 2 minutes. Ensure that the air hole retainer is pushed all the way in before dropping into the hot water.
  • Carefully remove the device using a spoon. Grab it by the handle and shake off any excess water. If the side walls flop over, use your thumb or finger to stretch them back to their original position.
  • Place the appliance on the lower teeth while ensuring that the “curved” portion of the device is facing up.
  • Close the lower jaw and bit down firmly while sucking out as much air as possible.
  • Push your lower jaw outward so that your lower teeth are just slightly past your upper set of teeth. Hold this position for 30 seconds while biting down firmly.
  • Use your index finger to push against the sides of your teeth. This will help to create a better fit.
  • After 30 seconds, drop the entire unit into a bath of ice cold water. Allow it to rest here for a minute or two.
  • Remove it from the ice bath and remove the air hole retainer. Check the fit and ensure that your lower jaw is in the forward position when your mouth is closed.
  • If necessary, you can repeat the process until you achieve the perfect fit.

The first night

My Sleeppro Easifit after fitting

My Sleeppro after fitting

After the fitting, it was time to put the SleepPro to the test. Before going to bed I placed the newly formed device into my mouth and the first thing that I noticed was how incredibly easy it was to breathe through the provided air holes. This is very important to me because I tend to breathe through my mouth as I sleep. My breathing was not at all restricted with the mouthpiece in. The holes were large enough to allow plenty of air in without making any annoying whistling sounds like some of the other units that I have tested tend to do.

As for comfort, it fit snugly inside my mouth was easy on my gums. Initially, the advanced jaw position was sort of awkward but this feeling eventually went away. It wasn’t long before I was sound asleep with my wife by my side. She’s a night owl who often stays up much later that I do.

In the morning I woke up an hour earlier than usual, feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day. I rinsed the mouthpiece off and placed it into the provided storage case. Later that day I asked my wife about my snoring and she said that I didn’t make a single sound! So far, so good. Let’s see how it stands the test of time.

From that day forward

For the following two weeks, I put the mouth guard in every night before going to bed. The process quickly became routine. Each morning I continued to wake up early, feeling well rested and full of energy. Something else that I noticed was that I no longer woke up with a scratchy throat from heavy snoring.

I actually slept in a separate bedroom and recorded myself for 3 nights as I slept. I was not at all surprised to hear the sound of silence as I played back the entire recording.

Taking care of it was easy, just give it a quick rinse under hot tap water before storing in the case.

As for the snoring, it has completely disappeared and has not returned! Unfortunately, my wife still snores on occasion. I’m still trying to convince her to use a mouthpiece for snoring.

Consumer reviews and comments

Black question markSeveral people who have tried the SleepPro have commented and for the most part, the feedback is positive in nature. The majority who have tried this product say that it works on the first night and continues to work for several months until it wears out. Overall, it seems to work in most cases and can be used as a stepping stone before purchasing a more expensive mouthpiece such as the SleepPro custom. Here are a few review that we found on Amazon UK:

“This products works, however after using it for over a months it keeps falling of my mouth, it might be because I molded it for to many times.” -Leo

“It takes a few weeks to get used to using it, your teeth can ache a little and occasionally the mouth piece falls out but without doubt it appears to have cured my snoring and would recommend it.” –Anton Sickle

“At first, the guard feels peculiar – and slightly painful – but has worked minor miracles to reduce my snoring. Overall, a fantastic purchase.” –Peter

After looking over the reviews, it is fairly clear that most are satisfied with their purchase although several people feel a bit of discomfort during the first few days of use. Having mild discomfort is a drawback that almost all oral appliances share. After all, you are placing a device in your mouth that has never been there. Your body will need some time to adjust and 3-7 days seems to be the norm.

Should I buy the SleepPro?

Man standing between word yes and no pointing to eachWhen deciding whether or not you should buy a boil and bite appliance, it all comes down to effectiveness, comfort, and affordability. MEDiTAS has seemed to have struck a decent balance between these three factors.

As for effectiveness, there are dozens of people (including myself) who have tried this product and have commented on its effectiveness. For most cases, it seems to do the trick. The concept is simple – by moving the jaw forward, relaxed muscles are tightened and move away from the airway. This has been proven in several clinical cases and the technique is widely practiced by doctors worldwide.

While there will likely be a period of discomfort, this typically goes away. The device was designed in such a way to maximize comfort although it is still a foreign object in your mouth which remains noticeable when you wear it. It is constructed of a soft rubber-like material that does not have sharp edges which can poke or cut your gums.

When purchased 2 at a time, the overall price is reduced to $35 per unit which provides value when compared to alternatives that are out there. If you have been thinking about trying a MAD to correct your snoring, this is a great way to see if such a product will work for you prior to buying a more costly device.

I really favor the large breathing holes because it is necessary for mouth breathers and several other manufacturers leave this feature out.

With a decent design, good reviews, and a 30-day money back guaranty, it’s an inexpensive way to see if a jaw advancing device will work for you.

If you know that a jaw advancement device will work for you or if you want to start off with a better-engineered mouthpiece, consider using a product such as the Zquiet (go here for my full review) which is much more compact and does not require boiling to custom fit. The cost is just a few dollars more than the SleepPro but it offers a better design that is not so bulky in the mouth and even allows you to speak and sip water while installing.

As far as effectiveness, I found the Zquiet to be just as effective as the SleepPro yet it’s more compact and can be used straight out of the packaging without the need to take an impression.

About the Prosnore 2

prosnore 2 on top of storage caseA while back we reviewed the Original Prosnore which turned out to be a pricey yet excellent product for controlling snoring. The company who brought you the Prosnore I has come out with a revised version that is even better than the first. They totally redesigned the entire mouthpiece while still offering the lab customized teeth impression feature. Few companies who sell OTC Mandibular Advancement Devices offer such a service.

The Prosnore II is a two piece unit that emulates the same practices often used by a dentist to make a professional mouthpiece. This makes sense because the product was developed by Dr. Gregerson, an actual dentist who has been practicing in the dentistry field for well over three decades.

Before this MAD can be used, it must first be customized to your mouth. Since everyone’s teeth structure is different, having a customized mold is important for both comfort and function. You will be wearing this device for approximately 1/3 of your life so you will want to ensure a proper fit. The developers understand the importance of this and have taken the road less traveled by other manufacturers and offer a lab customized mold.

In order to create a customized mouthpiece you must:

  1. Use the impression kit that will be mailed to you in order to create an impression of your upper and lower teeth. The impression kit consists of 2 trays labeled “upper” and “lower”. While following the instructions, place the molding clay into the dental trays, and insert each tray in its appropriate position. Take an impression and remove.
  2. Place the mold into the provided prepaid packaging and send it to the laboratory. From here your Prosnore 2 will be created.
  3. Within 2-3 weeks you should receive your new stop snoring device in the mail. Check for fit before using.

Overall, the entire fitting process takes around 4 weeks including travel time in the mail.

Difference between Prosnore 1 and Prosnore 2

prosnore 1 vs prosnore 2While both versions offer the same professional molding feature, there is one distinct advantage that the second model has over the first. The second version has snap settings that will allow you to choose just how far you would like to adjust your jaw forward. It uses a hook and loop material that allows you to make micro adjustments forward or back. This 2 piece design differs greatly from the previously sold one piece design.

The Original Prosnore has one advancement setting that moves the lower jaw just past the upper. The protruding piece in the front of the mouthpiece is secured in front of the teeth. In essence, your lower jaw is placed just a fraction of an inch in front of your upper.

While the original method still works, the ability to make small adjustments to gradually move the jaw forward more closely mimics the more expensive devices found at your doctor’s office. Some people have a huge overbite and moving the jaw forward using extreme measures will likely be uncomfortable.

The Prosnore 2 is also cosmetically different as it is clear in color compared to the original which is off-white in color. If visibility is an issue for you, this may be more appealing.

One last difference is the presence of air holes which allow breathing. The original is a one piece and has 2 raised areas that run along the surface of the teeth. This provides some ventilation. The second version offers 2 distinct air holes, making breathing much easier.

Then there is, of course, the price difference. The Prosnore I cost $119.99 while the Prosnore II cost $20 more.

What does it cost?

Green dollar bill sign The Prosnore II cost $139.99 which includes shipping of the impression kit and shipping to and from the lab. Considering the complexity of the molding process and the actual product design, this appears to fall in line price wise with its competitors.

Does anyone use the Prosnore II?

Person sitting on top of question mark Nationwide, various reviewers from CPAP and sleep apnea support forums to Amazon and eBay buyers have chimed in with their opinions. Overall, this seems to be one of the most respectable, internet ordered devices available. Many people like the fact that it is fitted from a customized impression and processed in a laboratory instead of the commonly used boil and bite devices which are difficult to fit and are done at home. Users find it to be one of the most comfortable devices that they have ever tried. Also, the small incremental jaw adjustments are a great improvement that is well accepted by many. In most cases, snoring stopped the first night while in other cases the jaw had to be adjusted several times before snoring was eliminated.

Some do however complain about the high cost of acquisition when compared to other mouthpieces that are available. While the more complex procedure of production often yields a better product, some simply can not afford the purchase price which is understandable.

A few people dislike the amount of time it takes to receive their device although the time frame is clearly posted prior to making a purchase. Others say it is too bulky and are not able to adjust to having something in their mouth the entire night.

Expert recommendation

Ok stampIt is not every day that you run across a product that offers so much in one package. While the higher price does turn some people off, those who can afford it agree that the extra cash spent is well worth it.

This device is yet another proven winner, offering a true custom fit that is comfortable and actually does what its suppose to do – stops snoring.

The advanced advancement feature makes the Prosnore 2 more accommodating for those who have a severe overbite and find one size fits all devices uncomfortable.

Having breathing holes is essential for most people and this is something that they kept in mind which yet another great feature.

Overall, I recommend this product to anyone who is serious about finding a product that is similar to what you would find at you dentists’ office but at a fraction of the price. However, price and lab processing time are two factors that should be taken into consideration before laying $140 on the table for the Prosnore II.

UPDATE: I have been informed by the manufacturer that the ProSnore Original and ProSnore II are currently unavailable. The Good Morning Snore Solution is a product that I have been using for a while now and it would make an excellent substitute. Also, check out some of the other products that I have tried and would recommend.

I have found less costly alternatives such as the Good Morning Snore Solution to be just as effective as jaw advancement devices such as the ProSnore. The GMSS is a bit cheaper than the Prosnore yet packs a powerful punch that eliminated even my heaviest snoring. You can read about my experience here.  Custom fitting this type of device is not required and it works the first night that it’s put to use.

The GMSS is a game changer in the anti-snoring device industry because it fits on the outside of your teeth and takes up very little room in your mouth. Did I mention that it’s just as effective as the traditionally used mandibular advancement device? Needless to say, it’s a product that I prefer and would recommend it to anyone interested in an effective yet affordable snoring solution.

It’s estimated that 1 out of 15 Americans (6.6%) have some form of Sleep Apnea. Most people have at least heard of Sleep Apnea but many are left wondering if their snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea or simply “just snoring”. So which one is it?

Sleep Apnea vs Snoring

snoringWhen faced with a problem such as snoring, most people by default attempt to fix the effect without examining the possibility of an underlying cause. In other words, snoring as we know it, could be caused by sleep apnea or some other unknown factor. With several cheap and easy fixes available online such as chin straps, throat sprays, and mouthpieces, it is difficult to resist the temptation of skipping the doctor’s office and silencing your inner beast with the latest gadget or snake oil.

Knowing if one causes the other can be quite challenging as there is no foolproof way to tell. If the sound of sawing logs keeps your partner up on a regular basis, this can be a tell tail sign that you need to seek help from a medical professional. Making a guess or assuming may put your health in danger of sleep apnea may cause high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure or a number of other medical issues.

The only way to know for sure is to consult with your doctor who may ask you to perform a sleep study or sleep test at home.

Signs of OSA or CSA

Excessive daytime sleepiness

Sleep apnea tiredWith the busy lives that we live today, most people spend their waking hour’s yearning for an evening nap. Working long hours and playing multiple roles in life will quickly drain you of energy and give the feeling of being tired. Not to mention eating and exercise habits are also a contributing factor to daytime tiredness.

Think about the days when you get the recommended 8 hours of sleep and still walk around in a zombie-like trance? If sleepiness continues with 8,10, or even 12 hours of sleep then OSA or CSA may be keeping you up at night. Since this condition does not allow uninterrupted sleep, you will wake up feeling tired and drained of energy no matter how many hours you sleep.

Waking up with a headache

headache osaPerhaps you wake up with a headache and don’t know why? While this could be a sign of a number of other problems, it is also a sign of sleep apnea. Pauses in breathing result in a decrease in oxygen flow to the brain, hence the headaches.

Having a big neck

fat neckHow does having a big neck relate to sleep apnea you ask? Larger necks are typically the result of being overweight. If the fatty tissue is visible on the outside, you can bet that excessive fatty tissue exists on the inside. OSA is often the result of fat tissue blocking and collapsing the airway. How big is too big?

  • Men with a neck circumference >17″
  • Women with a neck circumference >15″

Having a neck size in this range will increase the likelihood of having sleep apnea or the possibility of eventually developing it. After all, being overweight is one of the leading causes of OSA.

Pauses in breathing or gasps for air

Do you pause randomly in between breaths whiles sleeping? Do you gasp for air while sleeping? These are two sure signs that you may have a medical problem such as sleep apnea. Ask your partner, family member or friend to listen closely to your breathing as you sleep. If they notice either of these signs then it may be time for you to get a professionals opinion.

Forgetfulness

confusedIf during the day you become forgetful or have a hard time concentrating, this may also be a symptom. This symptom closely relates to daytime sleepiness as your brain never really gets a chance to rest and reset itself at night. You may spend your waking hours in a daze, having a hard time focusing and often forgetting small details or perhaps what task you were performing.

Final thoughts on snoring and sleep apnea

These are only a few signs that your snoring problem may be more than simple snoring. Remember that not all who snore have sleep apnea and not all who have sleep apnea necessarily snore. The only way to tell if your snoring is a result of OSA or CSA is to consult with your doctor who can administer testing in order to determine the cause. Knowing whether or not you simply snore is a very important step before decide which direction to turn for treatment.

Device description

GMSS2.0The MpowRx is a tongue stabilizing device that works by pulling the tongue muscles forward, clearing the airway from breathing obstructions. This appliance is one of three TSD’s that are currently available without having to present a prescription. According to the manufacturer, It has been clinically proven to reduce snoring and sleep Apnea while getting a better nights rest.

MPowRx was created by Dr. Leslie Dort of Calgary Canada, an actual dentist and sleep researcher. Dr. Dort who sells the exact same device under the brand Good Morning Snore Solution for about $50 less. It was created in response to a common problem that often receives little attention from suffers.

Constructed of a medical grade silicone, this mouthpiece secures to the tip of the tongue as it gently rests on the outside of the lips. When installed, it closely resembles a baby’s pacifier.

The manufacturer offers these instructions for use:

  1. Place the flat part of the TSD between the inner lips and outside of the teeth
  2. Suck the air out of the bulb while squeezing the tip
  3. Insert tongue and release the suction by removing your fingers from the bulb
  4. Relax your tongue.

As for the useful life of this device, most should be able to use it for up to a year or more. Since it does not come in contact with the sharp edges of the teeth, it is not as susceptible to wear and tear as many mandibular advancement devices are. If the TSD becomes worn or damaged, replacing it will be necessary in order to ensure proper functioning.

Also, since it is not worn between the teeth, it is denture friendly. This one advantage that these devices have over all others.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

OSA and MpowrxIf you have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and are looking for an alternative to using a CPAP machine, you may be wondering if the MPowRx will work for you. The answer to this question greatly depends on the severity of your condition. You are more likely to benefit from using this oral appliance if you have acute to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. More severe cases will likely have to stick with a CPAP machine.

Before treating your OSA with any mouthpiece of any type, it is imperative that you consult with your doctor to ensure that you are making the right decision.

Price

Cost of mpowrxA single pack and a two pack are available. The single pack costs $169.94 while the two-pack costs $199.94. In comparison to other TSD’s such has the AveoTSD, it is slightly more expensive when you purchase just one but when two are purchased at once the price drops significantly and aligns more closely with its competitors.

UPDATE: You can now purchase the MPowRx branded under the name “Good Morning Snore Solution” for $119.94. These are currently on sale for $99.94 each at the manufacturer’s website which can be accessed using the button below.

User reviews

user reviewsMPowRx is a newcomer to the market so there has not been very much buzz surrounding the positives or negatives associated with this product. There have been quite a few sleep apnea patients who have reported success while using it and often substitute it for their breathing machines. A handful of dental hygienist and others in the medical field have commented on how effective and non-obstructive this small device is.

Others who have tried it express difficulty getting accustomed to having something stuck to their tongue at night. Some complaints of tongue tenderness or even soreness. The side effect of excessive drooling has also been a common complaint of users. While these complaints are commonly cited, people often get used to using this product after a few days and these side effects eventually disappear.

TMJ suffers seem to rave about the MPowRx as it’s one of the few out there that can be used with this issue and other issues such as wearing dentures.

I have personally tried the MPowRx (branded under the name Good Morning Snore Solution, by MPowRx) and was very impressed with it. Below you will find a video that I made documenting my success with this product.

Personal recommendation

Does it work? While there are less expensive TSD’s out there, this one is backed by actual clinical data, is approved by the FDA, Australian Department of Health and Ageing and Health Canada. It is also listed with the Better Business Bureau with zero complaints currently filed. While the company has officially been in business since 2007, most of its activity has been in the past two years.

With clinical research conducted by an actual dentist who also studies sleep, Mpowrx Health & Wellness has certainly done their part to ensure that they are producing a quality product that works. This is a step that is often skipped by anti snoring device manufacturers due to the high costs associated with conducting such studies. Others simply base their products off of similar pieces that have already been studied.

One aspect of this product that I do not like is the fact that you must have at least one nostril open in order to breathe at night. The MpowRx does not accommodate those who have issues breathing through their noses. Therefore, if you have sinus issues or are chronically sick, you may want to consider a MAD with a hole that allows for breathing.

If you are looking for a stop snoring product that does not take up much room in your mouth and are able to breathe through your nose, this is a great product that has proven results. While more costly than some other devices, it actually works and is not intrusive. You can also check out their website using the link below.

Since 1999, Snoremate has helped thousands of snoring suffers kick their bad habit. This simple device is constructed from thermoplastic materials and works by gently pulling your lower jaw slightly in front of your upper jaw. The result is a less restrictive air passage that does not give way as air rushes past it. This snoring prevention tactic has been used for over 2 decades now as snoring is becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States.

Snoremate description and specifications

Snoremate with handle and storage case

Snoremate sells for $36.99 with Free shipping

The actual device resembles a mouthguard that is often used by athletes to prevent damage to their teeth. Being constructed of a thermoplastic material, it can be molded at home to fit over the ridges of your teeth and gum line.

Molding the Snoremate is a simple process that involves dipping the piece in hot water for 12 seconds, inserting into the mouth while moving the jaw slightly forward and sucking all of the air out. After a few seconds in your mouth, remove and place in ice cold water. The manufacturer recommends that you leave the attached tab for a couple nights before removing it with a pair of scissors. Leaving this behind will allow you to remold the appliance if you find that snoring persists due to lack jaw advancement.

One of the first things that you may notice is the lack of an air hole for breathing. While several others offer this feature, Snoremate left it out because of side effects such as airway dryness and noise issues. While these are valid points, the absence of breather holes can be problematic for sinus suffers or those who have a cold and have a blockage in their sinus cavities.

This is a one size fits all apparatus that can be used by either men or women. However, it (or any other MAD) is not recommended for use by children. The main reason is due to interference with the growth of the mouth structure.  In addition to the age restriction, those who wear braces or dentures should not use this product. Also, those with teeth, gum or jaw issues should avoid use.

Effectiveness

Decision dice. Yes, no maybeThe makers of Snoremate claim an 80% rate of effectiveness which corresponds with several clinical studies that were completed on MAD’s and snoring prevention. While other manufacturers are claiming 95% or 98% customer satisfaction, (no the same as the rate of effectiveness) they are surprisingly honest with their claims. Anyone interested in trying this type of gadget to prevent snoring should have realistic expectations. Depending on the severity of your snoring, it may or may not work. Keep in mind that it does come with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Useful life

Clock and a calendar While the ideal mouthpiece would last a lifetime, this is nearly impossible due to the nature of the product. It is important to choose a material that will be soft enough to be comfortable yet durable enough to last for a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately, the Snoremate fell slightly short in this aspect. The manufacturer clearly states that you should replace your piece every 3 to 4 months as the materials stretch out and allow the lower jaw to move back into its original position.

Cost

Green money signYou are given the option to purchase either 1 or 2 mouth guards from the manufacturer. The cost of one is $36.99 while two cost $44.99. Both are currently being offered with no shipping charges. If you purchase 2, the overall per unit price is $22.50. This is substantially below the average selling price of comparable items.

User reviews: What are people who actually purchased it saying?

Three people talking Most who have tried this product can agree that it is effective at preventing snoring. Married couples are reporting sleeping in the same bed together for the first time in years. Others claim to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the world.

There are however others (likely the other 20%) who claimed the Snoremate did nothing for their snoring and gave them a sore jaw in the morning.

Others report excessive salivation in their sleep and sensitive teeth after using. Similar side effects have been reported while using other over the counter MAD’s. Remember that no oral appliance is perfect and they all have at least some issue.

Expert opinion

Of all manufacturers who sell anti-snoring devices, this company is by far the most honest when it comes to truth in advertising. While this may drive away some potential customers, it enables others to have realistic expectations of the performance of their product.

I find the Snoremate to be constructed in a similar fashion as other mouth gear available on the market. Let’s break it down and examine the pros and cons.

Pros

  • 80% effective when it comes to snoring prevention.
  • Can be molded in your home without going to the dentist or sending off to a lab
  • Soft thermoplastic material makes wearing comfortable
  • At $22.50 (when purchased in quantities of 2) it provides value
  • Can also be used as a mouthguard to prevent teeth grinding
  • 14 years in business means you are dealing with a committed business

Cons

  • Life expectancy is 3-4 months
  • Can not be used with nasal blockage

Red OK StampWhile the longevity of the product is fairly short, this is made up for by the lower than average price. I would recommend purchasing 2 at a time in order to get the most bang for your buck.

As for nose breathers, sorry, you are out of luck. Since this product does not permit breathing through the mouth you must depend on your nose for breathing.

Anyone who has a mild to moderate snoring problem may want to consider this inexpensive option and perhaps move up to a better-built model down the road.

One such product that I recommend is the Zquiet which costs a few dollars more but is well worth it. I own one of these and have had incredible results. Here’s an excellent comprehensive review that I wrote which highlights my experience using this product.

The Zquiet is one of my favorites because it allows you to move your mouth free to take a sip of water or even speak. It’s quite compact and unlike the Snoremate, it doesn’t require you to boil and take an impression. I simply used mine straight out of the box without doing any modifications. Like all other mandibular advancement devices, it works the same by holding your lower jaw forward as you sleep to prevent your throat tissue from flopping around.

What’s the Prosnore?

Prosnore 1 on top of storage caseCreated with the help of Dr. Gregerson, the Original Prosnore is a custom fitted mouthpiece that is best classified as a Mandibular Advancement Device. Its unique feature is the ability to have your device custom fitted in a laboratory. So far, no other seller is offering such a service.

Unlike the majority of oral appliances that are being sold, the creators of Prosnore actually send you a custom mold kit which includes teeth trays and molding clay. Simply follow the instructions and mail your impressions to the laboratory so that your custom appliance can be created and mail back to you within 2-3 weeks.

The jaw advancement feature is like no other currently available. While most snoring mouth gear relies on the entire set of upper teeth to hold the lower jaw forward, the Original Prosnore only fits the lower teeth and uses a protruding extension which is secured in front of the upper teeth and gums. This extension holds the lower tooth line slightly in front of the upper,  tightening the throat muscles and preventing excessive tissues from blocking the airway. This creates less bulk in the mouth, making it more comfortable to wear.

The company has been selling the Prosnore since around 2007, which is a bit longer than average when compared some of the other devices that are available.

Sleep Apnea and the Prosnore

Man laying in bed next to woman wearing CPAP maskOn their website, they suggest that Prosnore is capable of eliminating your snoring and sleep apnea. In general, manufacturers of similar equipment steer clear of using such verbiage due to liability issues. In fact, you will be hard-pressed to find anyone selling this type of product to make such claims.

While the use of oral appliances has been proven in a clinical setting to reduce or eliminate the common condition of obstructive sleep apnea, doing so without the supervision of your doctor or dentist can be an extreme risk to your health. Only certain cases of obstructive sleep apnea may be treated using a mouthpiece. It is even riskier to self-diagnose yourself with sleep apnea and self-treat using an over-the-counter MAD. There is a possibility that you could have central sleep apnea which requires a much different approach to treatment.

Whether you are already diagnosed with OSA or believe that you have OSA, it is extremely important that you consult with your doctor before using the ProSnore or any other device to eliminate your snoring. Treating an un-diagnosed issue or known issue with anything not recommended by your physician is never a good idea. Remember, there can be several reasons for snoring, some serious, some not.

Selling price

Money Bag with dollar signWith a retail selling price of $119.99, this is certainly not the cheapest product on the market. They do however offer standard shipping for free and upgraded shipping for just $10 more.

User reviews and testimonies

Review speech bubbleAs with any other stop snoring gadget, you are going to find various reviews scattered throughout the internet. Most who have commented on the ProSnore are satisfied with the workmanship and effectiveness of the mouthpiece. The Prosnore delivers as promised, stopping snoring in most cases.

One company has been selling this device on eBay since 2007 and after looking into their reviews it appears as if they have absolutely zero complaints pertaining to the actual product in the past 12 months. Overall, they have a feedback score of 98.9% after over 3,500 transactions. Keep in mind that the seller also sells a few other products aside from the Original ProSnore.

There are of course those who snore heavily who do not benefit from using this appliance. There are a few who report issues with it not working as well (falls out at night)  as those who have a difficult time breathing through their nose due to the lack of mouth ventilation.

Honest opinion of the Prosnore

Thumbs up, thumbs downWhile no anti-snoring product is perfect, I am fond of this particular device for several reasons. Here is a list of characteristics that I approve of:

  • Created with the assistance of an actual doctor. Dr. Gregerson has a reputation to uphold and by endorsing this product he is putting his name on the line. He is a dentist who is on the board of the American Dental Association.  This is assurance.
  • This is the only product that allows the buyer have a custom-made impression created in a laboratory. This creates a more precise fit, unmatched by others who offer a simple boil and bite impression that is completed in-home using hot water.
  • Since it has a low profile and does not require the use of an upper tray, it doesn’t occupy much space in the mouth. This makes wearing it comfortable.
  • Prosnore has been sold for more than 7 years now. In an industry where most snoring mouthguards have been around for a couple of years or less, you are dealing with a company that has stood the test of time.
  • $120 is 1/3 the cost that you would pay to have the same oral appliance created by your dentist or doctor. While not a $30 device, you are getting a professional product at a reduced price.

On the downside, it does not permit one to breathe freely through their mouth. This can be a deal breaker if you have a tendency to breathe orally while sleeping. Fortunately, they have created the ProSnore II which actually comes with breathing holes in order to allow free breathing.

Overall this is an impressive product that seems to work great for those who have tried it.

I would recommend the use of this snoring appliance to anyone who is able to afford the $120 price tag and also has the spare time to wait for it to arrive in the mail after taking an impression. You can get more information and purchase one by visiting the Prosnore website.

UPDATE: I have been informed by the manufacturer that the ProSnore Original and ProSnore II are currently unavailable. The Good Morning Snore Solution is a product that I have been using for a while now and it would make an excellent substitute. Also, check out some of the other products that I have tried and would recommend.

If time is an issue or you would like to save a few dollars, the Good Morning Snore Solution is an excellent alternative that I have personally tried out. I’ve created a full review of this unique device with lots of great information.

It can be used the day that you receive it in the mail and does not have to be fitted, in a lab or at home. It features a simple one size fits all design and takes a different approach to snoring prevention. I’ve tried both jaw advancement devices and tongue stabilizing devices and have had luck with each type. I have however found that tongue stabilizers such as the GMSS are just as effective as traditional mouthpieces yet take up very little room in your mouth.

2015 UPDATE: It appears as if EZ Snore Stopper is no longer being sold by the manufacturer. The Snoremeds is an alternative that I have tried and is equivalent to the EZ Snore Stopper yet sells for less than $20 per unit when purchased in the value pack. You can Read my review on the Snoremeds here.

Ez Snore Stopper is yet another anti-snoring mouthguard that has recently hit the market. It is a MAD and as with several others, it uses the heat and bite process to create an exact mold of your teeth. This device works by gently moving the mandibular slightly forward, just past the maxillae. In essence, it pulls loose muscles and tissue forward, preventing tissues from flapping in the airway which is where the sound of snoring typically comes from. Similar oral appliances are used today to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

Info on the Ez Snore Stopper

EZ Snore Stopper with carry case and handleThe Ez Snore Stopper is made from Ethylene-vinyl acetate, which is created from vinyl acetate and ethylene. It is a simple one-piece device that does not allow for free movement of the jaw. It features an oblong oval shaped hole in the front, enabling breathing with the mouthpiece in.

Before being used, it must first be custom fitted to your mouth. According to the manufactures instructions you simply:

  • Remove the Ez Snore Snore Stopper from its packaging and insert the provided blue spacer into the air hole
  • Dip the device is hot water for several seconds
  • After a few seconds of cooling, insert the mouthpiece into your mouth
  • Position your mandibular slightly forward while creating negative pressure in your mouth by sucking the air out
  • Remove and allow to cool. Remove the blue spacer.

Once you create a custom mold, the device is ready to use. If you are unable to create a perfect mold the first time don’t worry. You can try several times until you achieve the perfect mold.

Who’s the creator of it?

Shawn Hart, EZ Snore Stopper

Shawn C. Hart of Fountaintown, IN is assumed to be the person behind EZ Snore Stopper

Behind every great invention is a creator. So who’s the great mind behind this device? This is a great question as no one seems to know. Their website offers no information on the person or even the company behind this product. After a little searching, I found that the unknown company selling this product owns a Medical Supply Store named Hart Medical Supplies which operates out of a 2 bedroom house in Fountaintown, IN.

Howard L Owens is listed as the owner of the 13-acre estate and operates under Hammons and Hart Holding Co LLC. Shawn C. Hart is listed as the LLC’s registered agent.

Their website was registered just over a year ago in May of 2012.

Beyond the available public information, there is no background of the creator or supplier of this device.

Is the Ez Snore Stopper any good?

Three people sharing a review of EZ Snore StopperThis device has only been available for a year or so and there are only a small handful of reviews available. The majority of these are user submitted testimonials that are posted on the main page of their website. The people who have tried it give the device glowing reviews claiming that they had the best night sleep ever with absolutely no snoring. There are a few reviewers who claim that this device closely rivals some of the more popular units that have been around for several years now.

Other reviews claim that the product does actually work but can cause dry mouth as a concentrated jet of air moves through the narrow hole, drying out the throat. In addition, some complaint of a distinct whistle sound coming from the mouthpiece.

Other than these two issues, all else seems to check out okay with no major complains or problems.

Cost to own

Green dollar Bill signYou are able to purchase either one or two mouthguards at a time. If you purchase one, the price will be $29.99 + $9.99 shipping and handling. The total cost per unit when purchased this way is around $40. Save $10 on each piece when you order two at a time. The overall cost of two is $49.99 + $9.99 S&H or $30 each.

At $30 per unit, the EZ Snore Stopper tops the list as the lowest cost device available.

Recommendation

Red OK StampBeing among the cheapest snoring pieces available, this certainly is a selling point, especially when similar devices such as the SnoreDoc are selling for $10 – $20 more.

Due to the lack of information provided on their website, it is likely that the seller, presumably Mr. Hart, is sourcing the guards from somewhere and acting as a re-seller.

While the country of origin or status of FDA registration is unknown, it has been stated that it is created from a food grade Ethylene-vinyl acetate material.

It is likely that this device is as effective as others when it comes to snoring prevention and best of all features the ability to breathe through the mouth. After all, several studies suggest that similar MAD’s are effective when it comes to reducing snoring.

While I dislike the lack of company transparency, clinical data or FDA compliance, I believe this could alternative for someone who is willing to give it a try and save a few dollars in the process but proceed with caution. The company who offers the suggested name of “As seen on TV” provides a 30-day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with your purchase.

Keep in mind that going the cheapest route is not always the best decision. While it works sometimes, you are in fact taking on a risk not knowing all of the details about the company or the product.

It’s always a good idea to choose an FDA approved product which is more likely to be safe. One such device that I have tried and really like is the Zquiet. You can read up on my review if you would like more information. This product is, in fact, FDA approved so you know that you are getting a device that can be used safely.  In addition, it contains no BPA or latex and is made in the USA. As for product performance, I’ve found the Zquiet to be superior to most boil and bite devices including the EZ Snore Stopper. It is thin and does not fill your entire mouth up with plastic. I’ve tried several mouthguards to control my snoring and it is one of the easiest to wear and most comfortable products out there. It will, however, cost a few dollars more but your mouth will thank you.

SnorBan has a long history dating back to 1994 as it was the first quit snoring mouthpieces introduced in the US without the need for a prescription. Since then, they have continued to provide their product, despite government opposition.

Device details

Snoreban closeup side view

SnorBan was the first to sell MAD’s to the general public and is a cost leader today

The SnorBan prevents snoring by holding your jaw in a slightly forward position in order to prevent a blockage in the airway which is supposedly the primary cause of snoring. It is a mandibular advancement device featuring the commonly used boil and bite at home molding technology.

Before being used, it must first be custom fitted to your mouth. No special tools are required, just 2 cups of boiling water, 2 cups of cold water and a pair of sharp scissors. The process is simple and requires that you:

  1. Dip the device in boiling water for 12 seconds.
  2. Remove and insert into mouth for 30 seconds. While in the mouth, suck in on your teeth and press your outer cheeks to create the mold.
  3. Drop the formed mouthpiece into cold water for 10 seconds.
  4. Trim off holding the strap in front of the piece.

This oral appliance should last for between 12 and 18 months, depending on how well it is cared for and whether or no you grind your teeth at night.

Creator and company history

Fitted SnoreBan

This is how the SnorBan appears after it is molded

The inventor behind SnorBan calls himself “Dave” yet provides no last name. Dave is an inventor and real estate developer who created the first prototype of this piece back in the early 1990’s to solve his snoring problem after a failed surgery attempt to stop his snoring by removing his uvula. He then created several devices for friends and family members to try out. After having success, Dave took his idea and began producing the SnorBan.

It wasn’t long until the long arm of the law started to crack down on his invention, claiming that it is a medical device that requires a prescription. A long battle was fought and today his invention is sold with a lengthy disclaimer, suggesting that it’s sold as a “sports mouthpiece” although it is exactly the same product that is being sold in Europe as a stop snoring device.

Keep in mind that it is not FDA registered. The manufacturer cites the reason for it not being cleared by the FDA is the additional costs associated with obtaining this approval which would ultimately be passed down to the consumer. While this may be true, there is likely other underlying reason why it has not been approved, hence government disapproval.

They do however assure you that all products used are safe as they use FDA compliant materials for the products which are sourced from the USA. Also, Snoring Relief Labs Inc. actually make the units in the United States and they are said to contain no BPA and are free of latex.

Cost comparison

Price of SnorebanThose who are money conscious (and who isn’t these days) can rest assured as this is one of the least expensive MAD’s on the market. The base price is $33.95 plus the cost of shipping which is $4.95 in the United States. For under $40 you can have an appliance that would cost several hundred dollars if fitted by a dentist.

When compared to similar products in its class, the SnorBan is priced much lower than its counterpart. The creator openly suggests that he has kept the price low throughout the years, making only minor adjustments to offset increases in production costs.

Reviewers opinion

Snorban reviewsSifting through user reviews can be very challenging when analyzing a product that has been around for so long. This is perhaps one of the most reviewed devices on the market, mostly due to its age. Unfortunately, other companies deliberately drop bad reviews, often making bogus claims to steer potential customers away.

After combing through the dirt, it fairly obvious that SnorBan has quite a few satisfied customers who have solved their snoring problem with this mouthguard. In fact, numerous reviews refer to is as a “marriage saver”. For most, it appears to work as advertised and is effective at preventing snoring.

As for complaints, some report difficulty keeping the mouthguard in their mouth the entire night. It also seems to cause salivating issues for some.

Also, most who have reviewed this product report tenderness of the front teeth which typically only lasts for the first few days.

Others complain about the lack of a breathing hole. This is an essential, often left out feature that is a must if you have chronic sinus issues and are unable to use your nose to breathe. Also, chronic cold suffers will not be able to use this product as having clear sinuses is essential.

Should I buy the Snorban?

Should I buy it question markThe fact that Snoring Relief Labs Inc. (the company behind Snorban) has been around for nearly two decades now should be a key indicator when it comes to deciding if this mouthguard actually works.

The boil and bite feature allows you to custom mold this device to fit your mouth perfectly without ever leaving your home. As for molding it, the process highlighted above is simple and can be repeated if necessary.

Unfortunately, the design does not permit air ports to allow for breathing through the mouth. If you have difficulty doing so then this product may not be for you.

Price wise, this is one of the most affordable and effective snoring solutions available on the market. Similar products often retail for around $60. Some are charging over $100!

If you are able to effortlessly breathe through your nose and would like to see if a basic mouthpiece will work, you may want to give it a try. Keep in mind that many find such boil and bite devices to be uncomfortable because they are so thick and bulky.

One product that I’ve tried and would recommend it the Zquiet which is a fraction of the thickness of the Snorban and doesn’t need to be fitted using the boil and bite method. I actually wrote about my experience here. The Zquiet cost about $20 more than the Snoreban but offers several features that are often considered a necessity by long-term snoring mouth guard users. Its compact design takes away the infamous mouthful of plastic feeling and it enables you to breathe freely through your mouth while sleeping. Aside from the fact that it works straight out of the box and requires no fitting, I really like fact that you can open and close your mouth free to speak or even take a sip of water.
