side effectsFor over 2 decades now, snoring suffers have been using mouthpieces (oral appliances) to alleviate their snoring problems. This practice has been studied by multiple medical researchers and while many of them argue over the exact rate of their effectiveness, they all agree that such devices effectively controls snoring to some degree.

During their studies, researchers began to take notice of a few mild to moderate common side effects as they began to surface. Here are the most prevalent ones that some have experienced.

Dry mouth / Hypersalivation

drymouthDry mouth and Hypersalivation are perhaps the most common side effects experienced by users. Dry mouth is most commonly seen when mouth breathers choose an oral appliance that is designed with a narrow opening which allows a concentration of high volume air to create a stream. This stream of air then travels through the mouth when it enters the airway. The continuous movement of concentrated air tends to dry out the mouth.

The other extreme is hypersalivation and this can be experienced with both types of mouthpieces, with breather holes and without, although it is more prevalent in devices without.

Throughout the years most people have likely slept with nothing in your mouth. When a large piece of plastic is inserted, your body will try to adjust and may create excessive salivation. As a result, you awaken with your face in a puddle of drool.

Tooth discomfort / Pain

toothacheAn oral appliance is also known as a Mandibular advancement device and works by holding your lower jaw (mandibular) in a slightly forward (advanced) position in an effort to clear a restricted airway.

The typical design of a MAD consists of two dental trays that are custom fitted to conform to your teeth. While the design may vary, most use the front of the upper teeth and the rear of the lower teeth to hold the mandibular forward. This means that you will experience constant light pressure on your teeth as you sleep and may wake up in the morning with soreness around your gum line or teeth.

Masticatory muscle pain or stiffness

As mentioned, this treatment works by pulling the lower jaw forward and holding it there as you sleep. While you may not experience tooth discomfort, you are likely to experience stiffness or pain in your jaw muscles at least for the first couple of days. Jaw muscles are not used to being stretched and held such an unnatural position for an extended period of time. As a result, you will likely experience an aching sensation for a few days. This is similar to the feeling experienced when going back to working out after taking an extended break.

So far, the side effects discussed are common and generally considered mild and typically go away on their own after just a few days. The following side effects are far less common and more serious than the previously mentioned.

Changes in occlusion

occlusionSome long-term users have reported a change in their occlusion. While pulling the jaw forward for 8 hours or more per day, you could potentially run the risk of your jaw remaining in the forward position once the piece is removed. The muscles can become accustomed to resting in this position and remain there. However, this side effect is not of extreme prevalence.

Loose teeth

LooseOne of the least common side effects is loose teeth. This is most commonly experienced by those who already have an existing issue with their teeth which is further irritated by using an oral appliance. Once again, this is not a common side effect but it is something that you should be aware of.

More information

Keep in mind that an over the counter oral appliance should not be used for the treatment of sleep apnea without the close supervision of a doctor. There are a plethora of excellent studies which highlight some of the side effects of a snoring mouthpiece. A few of them are here here and here.

Which mouthpiece should I buy?

The anti-snoring mouthpiece is one of the most highly effective stop snoring solutions available. With over 100 different products to choose from, deciding which one to buy can be challenging.

As a snorer and product reviewer, I have tried many of these devices and created a list of recommended devices that will help to make this decision much easier.

SleepTight – My #1 Recommended Snoring Mouthpiece

sleeptight creamThere are over three dozen do-it-yourself mouthpieces to choose from. Some have special features while others are quite simple. The “SleepTight” is a product that I have tried and can recommend because it has several desirable features at a reasonable price.
Its most notable features include a larger air hole at the front and grooves that are incorporated into the tray which helps to create a tighter fit. For mouth breathers, an opening that provides adequate airflow is necessary and the SleepTight has the largest opening that I have seen in a mouthpiece.
It’s a great choice for those who tend to breathe through their mouth while sleeping or those with allergies, sinus issues, colds, a deviated septum or who have consumed excessive alcohol. The SleepTight was designed by a seasoned dentist with over 30 years of experience.  Here are a few key points to consider:

  • Created By Dr. Michael Williams
  • FDA Cleared

The popularity of anti-snoring mouthguards has exploded in recent years as people all across the world, Australia, UK and USA in particular, have discovered just how effective these simple devices can be when it comes to eliminating snoring.

In the United States, snoring suffers in search of snoring relief are having great difficulty locating this particular snoring solution in their local drug stores. Throat sprays, OTC pills, and nasal strips, and chin straps are all easily found but what about the snoring mouthpiece? Being a popular choice in snoring prevention, one would think that major retailers would be all over the sale of these?

Walmart, Walgreen’s or CVS and the sale of anti-snoring mouthpieces

mouthpiece for snoring WalgreensAfter doing your homework, you decide to go out and purchase a snoring mouthpiece locally from a Walmart, Walgreen’s or CVS only to come home empty-handed. Why is it that these devices can be found all over the internet but can not be purchased from your local box retailer? There has to be a reason behind this.

While in other countries such devices are openly sold at retail establishments on store shelves, the United States has a different take on the subject of “over the counter” Mandibular Advancement Devices. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration regulates the sale of such products. They classify snoring mouthguards as a class II medical device, placing restrictions on the sale of this product. The FDA believes that such devices should be prescribed and fitted by a physician due to concern that misuse may cause medical concerns. For instance, someone may purchase this device to stop their snoring which is ultimately caused by an undiagnosed and more serious condition known as sleep apnea.

FDAFor several years now, this battle has been fought between the FDA and snoring mouthguard manufacturers. UNITED STATES v. SNORING RELIEF LABS INC is a well-known case in which the FDA pursued Snoring Relief Labs (makers of Snorban) This case dates back to 2000 but was an ongoing issue for several years prior. After reading this court case the message is clear – the FDA is against the open sale of anti-snoring mouthguards without a prescription.

What about online retailers?

You have likely seen several US-based companies selling their mouth guards that promise to prevent snoring. So how are they able to sell their products?

While there are several workarounds, many manufacturers take advantage of, the Exemptions From Adequate Directions for Use as outlined by the FDA. Often times the consumer will have to fill out a questionnaire concerning their health before being able to place their order. The order will only be completed if they meet the criteria by answering all questions correctly.

Then there are other manufacturers who suggest that their products are being sold as a night guard to prevent teeth grinding but claim that their devices are “constructed exactly the same as an anti-snoring mouthguard”.

Others flat out sell their snoring mouthpieces with total disregard when it comes to obeying the law.

Why can’t you buy them at your local retailers?

Snore EliminatorSo you found mouthguards for teeth grinding but none that are specifically labeled for snoring at your Walmart, Walgreens or CVS? By now the answer should be fairly obvious. While there are several small mom and pop businesses who are manufacturing and selling these products at the risk of the FDA cracking down on them at a moments notice, the big players are choosing to sit on the sidelines due to the potential legal risks associated with selling such products. Perhaps this will change one day if the regulations become more relaxed but for the time being, don’t expect to see them appear on retailers’ shelves.

In the meantime, if you are interested in buying a mouthguard to help with your snoring you will find a ton of great devices that are can be purchased online. I’ve tried well over a dozen and found that almost all of them work to some extent. One of my favorites is the Good Morning Snore Solution because it barely takes up any room in your mouth and works incredibly well. You can read my complete review which also includes a video that I created that goes over my entire experience using the GMSS. This newer method of treating snoring is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional “boil and bite” type mouth guards and has been proven to be just as effective.

Home sleep study kit

Home sleep studies can be conducted for as little as $250

Recently, I decided to examine the cost of Polysomnography, better known as a sleep study. A sleep study is used to screen for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. It is typically conducted in a sleep center or hospital and involves being connected to various sensors which monitor heart rate, oxygen levels in the blood, breathing patterns and eyelid movement. Once all monitoring devices are attached to their proper location, the lights go out and you will eventually fall asleep. While sleeping, the sensors send information to a device that records and analyzes every breath that you take, or perhaps don’t take. After completion, the doctor examines the results and gives a recommendation.

After a bit of searching, I found that people who went through a sleep study were receiving bills for as much as $4,000. Talk about sticker shock! Depending on location, the amount billed seemed to vary from $2,500 on the low end to $4,000 on the higher end. These costs do not include the initial visit with your physician, visits with specialist or follow-up visits which can add several hundred or even thousands more to this price.

While this may not be of interest those who have good insurance coverage, an increasing number of Americans are without healthcare or have a plan with a very high deductible. For the average person in this position, undergoing a sleep study can really place them in a financial bind.

Introducing the at home sleep study

sleep study kit at homeAfter seeing the high out-of-pocket costs associated with the Polysomnography, I started to investigate alternatives to the traditional sleep study. The first concept that came to mind was an at home study. After all, at home equipment is available for analyzing everything from drug use to blood pressure, glucose levels and even paternity testing. Why not sleep apnea? Lo and behold, home sleep apnea tests are available and at a reasonable price.

The available testing kits typically consist of many of the same monitoring devices that are found in a sleep lab. This equipment is offered on a rental basis and contains a device which records all information that is later analyzed by a physician.

Most kits contain breathing sensors that attach to the nose and mouth, a heart rate monitor, strap that detects movement of the chest, and blood oxygen monitor. The patient follows the manufacturers provided instructions and sleeps as they normally would in the comfort of their own home. This procedure is conducted for anywhere from one to three days. Once completed, the unit is mailed to a laboratory where the results are analyzed. Many online companies that offer this service will even write a prescription if needed.

Cost comparison at home sleep apnea test vs sleep study in lab

compare sleep studiesPerforming an at home apnea test is obviously going to be less expensive, as the equipment being used is not as technology advanced and you are not paying for the facility and staff. We already know that you can expect to pay upward to $4000 for a sleep study but how much does an at-home sleep study cost?

One can order an at-home test for as little as $250. This is considerably lower than the overall price that one would expect when entered into a sleep study.

At home testing criticism

user reviewsNot everyone is welcoming home sleep studies as an alternative to lab sleep studies and for good reason.

It is important to remember that these types of test are fairly accurate when it comes to diagnosing most with moderate to severe cases of sleep apnea. Others who have very mild OSA will likely miss a proper diagnosis when using this type of test. However, the majority of people may benefit from using such a device. Keep in mind that if the results come back negative, it may be a good idea to further investigate.

Also, critics say that at home devices do not detect brain activity which is a key factor used to help determine if there is an issue. In a lab setting, several sensors are attached to the head which monitors brain activity during sleep. Without this, critical information is not being used to drawing a conclusion.

In addition to diagnosing sleep apnea, the more expensive Polysomnography can help to determine if another sleep disorder is present. With the at-home study, some may rule out OSA and fail to investigate another sleep disorder. It is possible that you have one of several hundred different known sleep disorders.

About the Noiselezz

The Noiselezz hinged mouthpiece in white front view

The Noiselezz has a hinged snoring mouthpiece that is available in 2 different versions.

The Noiselezz I and  Noiselezz II are both produced by Therapy Control Products, an Alberta Canada based company that specializes snoring and sleep apnea relief products. The Noiselezz is a Mandibular Advancement Device that brings forth the lower mandibular as a means to create a clear passage in which air can flow without any obstructions to go around. Breathing obstructions, excessive tissue, or loose tired muscles are all contributing factors that cause snoring.

Unlike most MAD’s out there, this one has been created so that most people are able to use it right out of the box. Several others require that you do a “boil and bite” or even send a mold of your teeth off to a laboratory which can take several weeks. Using this device may be as simple as removing it from the box and inserting into your mouth after a quick rinse.

A “spring hinge” allows for free movement of the jaw so that you can speak and breathe through your mouth. A hinged jaw is a feature that very few manufacturers are offering as these are typically one piece and often have no breathing holes at all. If at any time it loses it spring action, you can refresh it by giving it a quick bath in hot water.

There are however some exceptions to this rule. If your teeth are crooked or if your teeth are abnormally placed, you may have to make some adjustments to create a more comfortable fit. Remember, unlike other devices, you do not want to attempt to reposition the lower jaw advancement. This is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment. If localized irritation occurs (irritation in a specific area) you may have to make some adjustments.

Using a sharp pair of scissors, trim away any excess material that may be rubbing on your gum line. From here, simply dip the unit in hot water (maximum temp of 163° F) for 5-10 seconds. Doing so will soften the plastic material. Do not heat beyond this temperature and do not leave in hot water for more than 5-10 seconds.

Use a household item such as a spoon to open up and reshape the area that is irritating you. It may take several attempts to find the perfect fit.

It is best to wear the device during the day when first getting used to it. This will allow your body to adjust and gives you an opportunity to identify problem areas that may need to be reshaped.

Noiselezz I vs Noiselezz II

The manufacturer offers 2 different models but whats the difference? While they are both effective when it comes to controlling snoring, the second edition has a slight modification which helps to keep the device in your mouth at night. This is a common issue that some were experiencing with the first model so the second edition was created. Aside from the modification, they are identical with the exception of a $5 price difference between the two.

Price

Price tag with magnifying glass over topThe Original model cost $44.99 while the second edition will set you back $49.99. There is, of course, a $7.50 shipping and handling fee on both devices. In comparison to other MAD’s on the market, the price is middle of the road – not the cheapest yet not the most expensive.

Customer feedback and reviews

Yes, No, Maybe decision diceReviewers who left positive feedback all agree that the simple design is better. It is more compact and slimmer than many others on the market, making it more comfortable to wear at night. Overall, it seems to correct the issue of snoring in most people.

There are however a few exceptions in which people were not satisfied with the results. Those who were not satisfied complain of jaw soreness or excessive dry mouth. There were only a few reported cases of either one.

Here are a few comments that were left by Amazon customers who have purchased this device. (Source: Amazon)

“It did take some time getting use to, the sore jaw and teeth in the morning, but they are all that way. This is so simple in design. I found the material quite soft and haven’t had any issue with gum rubbing. And, it is so easy to clean. I just pour Listerine on it, rub it around, dry it off, and it’s ready to go.” – Tillman

“This item hurt my gums and my jaw. The pain lasted for several days. I threw it away.” -Ifca

“There wasn’t any directions with it first off. It didn’t fit my mouth and it really hurt my teeth and couldn’t keep it in my mouth.” – Andrew Pahl

What is our opinion?

Man sitting on top of question mark making decision While some find that the one-size-fits-all design does not necessarily fit everyone, it does work for most people. Unfortunately, there are a few that it does not work for although there may be hope if you take the time to reshape the area that is bothering you.

The hinged design is a definite plus and is often left out by others. This allows you to slightly open your mouth to allow air in. For many, this is an important feature.

I prefer the fact that these are pre-set and often do not require molding. Most devices require an often complicated boil and bite process before they can be worn.

Simplicity is often best in many cases, and with a snoring mouthpiece, this is no exception. The simple design leaves little room for error and helps to keep bacteria out of the crevices. Other more complicated pieces can harbor bacteria and be very difficult to clean.

This product works like any other device so the technique is nothing innovative.

If you have regular teeth and gums this product may be a good choice. If you have snaggleteeth, a custom mouthguard may be a better choice.

If you want a mouthpiece that is very similar to the Noiselezz you may want to consider the Zquiet which I have tried and highly recommend. It sells for about the same price yet has been better engineered in comparison to the Noiselezz. You can get more information here which includes my complete review.

The Zquiet is BPA and latex free and has also been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. Also, it is made in the United States and not sourced from China or any other country that may be using questionable materials or practices.  The company who sells this device has been around for several years now and unlike the Noiselezz, it comes with a 100% money back guarantee. This is a product that I have used to correct my snoring and would recommend to anyone looking for a ready to use a device that is both comfortable and effective.

Device description

MEDiTAS Ltd is at it again with yet another anti-snoring device that rivals its Easifit and Custom versions. This design combines the best of both worlds as it includes the ability to create a mold at home while allowing the ability to make jaw advancement adjustments.

SleepPro Contour front view

The company who manufactures this mouthpiece also has a line of other products including two other mouth guard like MAD’s and a chin strap support. They sell their products worldwide in the United States, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Ireland and Italy. MEDiTAS has been doing business since 1998 which is an unusually long time when compared to many of its competitors in the snoring solutions business.

Why choose the Contour?

Man scratching head asking why The SleepPro Contour is best described as a hybrid between the Custom version and the standard version.

Upon arrival, it comes in two pieces which are custom formed at home in your kitchen using hot water. Here is the basic process used to create a custom unit.

  1. Boil a small pot of water on your stove top and pour into a small bowl.
  2. Insert the handle into the device as instructed and submerge the Contour in boiling hot water for 3 minutes before removing.
  3. Once cool to the touch, place unit in your mouth and bite down with your lower jaw in the forward position. Use a sucking motion to remove excess air while pushing on your cheeks all around the device.
  4. After 40 seconds, remove and place in icy cold water. Once cold you may remove the handle that was previously inserted.
  5. Adjust the strap to the desired level. The manufacturer recommends that you start somewhere in the middle and gradually increase the setting until your snoring stops.
Incremental adjustments

SleepPro Contour MouthpieceThe Self Fit Adjustable model mimics some of the same oral appliances that are commonly issued by dentist or doctors. Having the ability to make up to seven different incremental adjustments sets this unit apart from its competitors. There are only a handful of others who offer this feature combine with the boil and bite technology. Since almost everyone responds differently to mandibular advancement device settings, having the ability to adjust the advancement makes this product highly effective as it should work for most people.

Maximum comfort

There are numerous devices out there that claim to be one size fits all. These products often turn out to be a disappointment as many complain of jaw and gum pain after waking in the morning. While there will be some degree of discomfort with any piece, the Contour minimizes this discomfort by allowing you to control just how far you move your jaw forward. If you find the pain unbearable, try replacing the straps with shorter ones to allow the lower jaw to recede a bit. Strike a balance by finding a comfortable position that is in fact effective. For most, this will be the adjustment that is slightly beyond the middle point.

What does it cost?

Green dollar bill signOne of the most commonly asked questions is “how much does it cost?” The unit price is $129.95 while shipping cost $7.50. If you have recently purchased any other SleepPro product you may be eligible for a 20% discount by simply emailing the company. It comes with a 30-day money back guarantee which means that in this case, they will refund 50% of the purchase price if you are not satisfied with your purchase.

While the Contour is not the cheapest MAD on the market, it is uniquely designed and highly effective when it comes to snoring prevention.

My experience using the Sleeppro Contour

I recently had a chance to try out this anti-snoring device. From start to finish, I documented everything in the video below from the initial fitting to my follow-up opinion.

Unboxing and fitting

While unboxing my Sleeppro, my initial thoughts were “how many pieces does thing have?”.  After reading over the instructions, it became clear that most pieces were only used one time while others were never used at all. I found the fitting process to be much easier than initially anticipated. Here are the steps that I followed to fit the device.

Supplies needed

  • 1 Cup of boiling hot water
  • 1 Cup of cold water
  • Retrieval tongs
  • A stopwatch
  • Mouthpiece
  • Fitting handle
  • Set of provided adjustment bands

Fitting instructions

  1. Snap the fitting handle into the notches on the lower tray while paying close attention to the method that you use while snapping into place. I would recommend going in at a 45-degree angle and then snapping down.  The trays are marked both “upper” and “lower”.
  2. Use the same method described above to snap in the upper dental tray.
  3. Completely submerge the device into a cup of hot water for 3 minutes. This will soften the moldable plastic gel inside of the tray.
  4. Remove the device using a pair of tong and allow it to sit for a few seconds.
  5. Carefully insert into your mouth. Ensure that it’s not upside-down. Bite down and hold for 45 seconds.
  6. Remove from your mouth and drop into a cup of cold water. Allow to sit for 2 minutes.
  7. Remove from cold water and carefully remove the fitting handle.
  8. Replace handle with a set of matching bands. Start with the midrange bands.
  9. Check for fit
  10. After using for one night, make adjustments by replacing the bands. For more advancement, use a shorter band, for less advancement use a longer band.

In the end, the process turned out to be much easier than I would have ever imagined.

Seven-day trial

Front view of my custom molded SleepPro Contour

My SleepPro Contour after completing fitting process

Although it did stop my snoring during the first night, I did wake up in the morning with a sore jaw. Because of this, I replaced the bands with the next larger size. Doing so fixed the soreness issue and the next 6 nights were amazing!

It not only effectively controlled my snoring, but it was very comfortable. Overall, the Contour had a low profile that allowed me to close my mouth to a comfortable level. There is a thin air gap between the upper and lower tray that allowed a massive volume of air to enter my mouth.

The molded plastic hugged my teeth very closely, helping to keep it in my mouth. I did not have any issues with it remaining in my mouth the entire night.

Overall, I really like the Contour because it has several desirable features including comfort, breath-ability, and adjustability.

What do the critics say?

Animation of two people talking to each other Being one of the most versatile MADs on the market, many people claim that this is the perfect anti snoring mouthpiece as it can be fitted right in your home and is adjustable. Most people report being satisfied with the comfort level and ability to breathe through the mouth while sleeping. It looks as if SleepPro has found the perfect hybrid device that is effective, long lasting, and easy on the gums and jaw.

Others disagree and say that it is too bulky and causes them to drool excessively while sleeping. Some have a difficult time during the fitting while others say it’s not effective. While these types of complaints do exist, it seems as if they are few and far between.

When reading customer reviews on the net, one should be aware that competitors often leave negative feedback in an effort to steer customers towards their product. Likewise, you will find that some manufacturers leave feedback on their own products giving their products glowing reviews. For this reason, it is best to learn about the product and read user reviews with a grain of salt.

My recommendation

Man questioning if he should buy SleePro Contour When it comes to snoring prevention, this is perhaps one of the best products available. I prefer a unit that has holes which allow for breathing, one that is soft and comfortable and one that is adjustable. Perhaps the only way to improve this MAD is to offer the same design with a lab molded option. This would increase the overall price but will create a more precise piece that would be thinner.

While fitting one may be somewhat of a challenge to the average user, this process only has to be done once. Keep in mind that you are able to make adjustments to the advancement at any time. Simply remove the existing straps and replace with a shorter or longer one.

My recommendation is that you give the SleepPro Contour a try if you are able to afford the extra expense. If $127 is too much there are several simple boil and bite devices that may work for you.

You may also want to consider the Good Morning Snore Solution (further info can be found here). The GMSS will cost you about the same amount as the SleepPro Contour but requires very little room inside of your mouth. It actually works by holding your tongue forward which has been clinically proven to work just as well when it comes to preventing snoring as your standard mandibular advancement device. I also own one of these and prefer it to the Contour because it doesn’t require any fitting or assembly plus it simply fits on the end of the tongue and is held on by a gentle suction. I’ve recommended the GMSS to my father and grandfather who snore just as much as I do and it worked wonders for all three of us.

About the SnoreFighter

Snorefighter side view

The Snorefighter has 3 available models – for mouth breathers, nose breathers, and a combination of the two

In 2005, Yanzhong Li and Winston Li created Kudo Research, a Connecticut based company that manufactures and distributes the Kudo SnoreFighter.

The SnoreFighter is similar to several other MAD’s as it works by holding the lower jaw slightly forward thereby creating a less restrictive air passage that does not flap around and collapses. After all, vibrating tissues are the main culprit behind snoring. By addressing this issue, snoring is usually eliminated or in some cases greatly reduced.

Just how effective is this product? Kudo Research claims that it is 93% effective which is a higher percentage when compared to several clinical research studies that suggest average effectiveness for MAD’s is somewhere in the mid-80’s.

As for construction, it is made from an FDA approved moldable plastic resin. While pre-formed to fit around the upper and lower teeth, it can be fine-tuned by submerging the entire piece in a bowl of hot water for several seconds. After a few seconds in a hot water bath, the device is removed and cooled for just a few seconds before inserting into the mouth. Once in the mouth, the user moves their jaw slightly forward, bites down and holds for several seconds while the mold cools. From here it is removed and dropped into a bowl of cold water which helps to cool and retain its shape.

While there are a lot of similarities between this device and several others on the market, Kudo is the only company that allows you to choose from 3 different products – one for mouth breathers, one for nasal breathers and one for those who tend to breathe using both methods. This is perhaps one of the most important decisions that one must make before making a purchase. This company has all of their bases covered when it comes to product selection.

Kudo Research vs. Ranir, LLC

Two boxers fighting There has been some recent controversy surrounding the Kudo Research (makers of the SnoreFighter) and Ranir, LLC, a Michigan based company who produces oral health care products. Ranir manufacturers a similar oral appliance and claims that Kudo has infringed upon their intellectual property rights. The complaint was filed on November 1, 2012, and the results of the case have not been made public yet.

This means that it is possible that the device will no longer be available in the future or will have to be redesigned before entering the market once again. As of August 21, 2013, the website is still live yet the price and ordering information contains a broken link.

Price and Guarantee

Price under magnifying glassWhen initially introduced in 2009, the SnoreFighter was being sold for $34.99 + $6.00 shipping. Today the selling price is $39.98 + $7.00 shipping cost, bringing the grand total to approximately $47.00 shipped to your doorstep. The company does, however, offer a second unit for only $20 more which significantly drives down the overall price. Unlike many competitors who offer a 30-day money back guaranty, this one comes with an additional 30 days for a total of 60 days.

Consumer feedback

product reviewOver the years this device has received a great deal of feedback from customers who have used it. It is among the most popular products on the market and has been reviewed by many. In almost all cases, customers who purchased it were very satisfied with their buying decision and claim that not only is it comfortable but it also is very effective at eliminating snoring.

There are of course the 7% who did not have much luck making it work. The critics complain about chronic jaw soreness, difficulty molding the device and having issues keeping the appliance in their mouth the entire night. While these complaints are likely legit, such side effects are commonly seen with several other similar boil and bite mouthpieces on the market.

Actual consumer reviews speak the loudest when it comes to knowing the true effectiveness of a product. Here are a few bits of feedback that were left by actual customers who purchased and tried this oral appliance.

“I’ve actually tried both this one and the Pure Sleep. Both, (according to my wife at least!), worked well. I got the Snorefighter after the Pure Sleep got trodden on.” -Paul Goss

“I don’t own the snorefighter, but I’d just like to chime in here on what I see as a very reasonable price – if it works! –Micaela

“So, I saw that part of their mission statement is “Create Happiness” and I thought I’d review it. For me, it’s a 5 star mission statement.” -Peter

Our thoughts

Ok stampHaving the ability to choose the type of piece based on your breathing habits is a key feature that sets the SnoreFighter apart from all others.

The boil and bite soft thermoplastic material allow you to create a custom unit in your home with only a bowl of hot water and a few minutes. Simply give it a quick bath in hot water, remove and create your mold – it’s that simple.

Comfort is also important as some companies manufacture mouthguards that are said to induce pain while wearing. With the SnoreFighter most agree that it is one of the most comfortable anti-snoring devices on the market. Since you will be wearing it for at least 8 hours every night, it is important that you are comfortable wearing it.

When it comes to price, the individually purchased unit is priced a bit on the high side at $35 but if you purchase a second one at $20, the average cost drops to $27.50 which is reasonably priced when compared to the available alternatives.

Although not as innovative as others that are available, it is still effective, affordable and comfortable. Plus you really can not go wrong with the additional 30 days that the company gives you to decide if it’s right for you.

Overall, this product is worth giving a go if would like to try a basic inexpensive mandibular advancement device. If you are more serious about using a MAD as a long-term treatment solution, you may want to think about a better designed and more comfortable device such as the Zquiet. You can read over my critique here for more information on this product.

The Zquiet is a lot more compact in comparison to the SnoreFighter and also does not need to be boiled in order to fit. In fact, it can be comfortably used without any modifications. I really like the hinged design which is a feature that is usually not offered by others. Their design makes it easy to talk without removing the device and even allows you to drink with the appliance still in your mouth.

Being overweight is the #1 cause of snoring

Being overweight is the #1 cause of snoring

It is not uncommon for snoring and sleep apnea sufferers to inquire about undergoing surgery to correct their problem. In a society where people are interested in a magic bullet to resolve every issue, it is alarming to hear so many suggest surgery as a first option where there are so many safe, nonsurgical solutions to this common problem.

The truth is, in most cases the cause it simple – being overweight. People who are overweight tend to have thicker than average necks. Extra deposits of fat which restrict airflow are a major contributing factor that causes snoring. By taking measures to lose weight you will not only improve your overall health but reduce or possibly even eliminate your snoring problem.

But I am not overweight you say? While there is a positive correlation between overweight individuals and snoring, having a few extra pounds actually may not be the cause of your problem. There are numerous, less common causes that you may want to think about. Among these are sleep position, alcohol or sedative use, water consumption, or simply muscles in the neck that tend to relax.

The good news is that in most cases you can take measures to resolve the cause of your snoring without having to resort to surgery. Going under “the knife” should be at the bottom of your list of choices. Here are a few suggestions that you may want to try:

  • Don't ask your partner to wear ear plugs. Address the issue.

Don’t ask your partner to wear earplugs. Address the issue.

Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), Tongue Stabilizing Devices (TDS), Snoring chin straps, anti-snoring pillows, nose strips, nose cones, or nasal sprays have been proven to be effective to some degree.

    Snore

The snoring mouthpiece is a great choice for snoring relief

  • Sleep on an incline by slightly elevating the head of your bed
  • Stay away from alcohol and sedatives. These relax throat muscles and make them more likely to flap against each other.
  • Stay hydrated. Some speculate that a contributing factor to snoring is thick mucus caused by a lack of hydration. Remaining hydrated has several health benefits and may also help with your snoring.
  • Try throat exercises to tighten muscles.
  • Watch what you eat. As previously mentioned having excess fat can really cause some serious health issues, including snoring.
  • Give up smoking. Did you know that smoke causes inflammation or swelling of the airway? This may be a contributing factor to your problem.
  • Develop healthy sleeping patterns. Going to bed on time and getting enough sleep is essential to your health and will help to prevent snoring. If you are asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow this is an indication that you are exhausted and your body will instantly go into deep sleep mode.

snoring surgeryIt is, of course, advisable that you visit your doctor for advice if you suspect that you have sleep apnea – a condition where you repeatedly cease to breathe for several seconds while sleeping. It is common for sleep apnea suffers to snore while snoring is not always an indication of the condition. If unsure just ask your doctor.

Perhaps you have tried all the above and then some without results. At this time you may want to consider a surgery to correct the cause of your snoring. This usually involves removing the Uvula or tonsils or any other object that may be creating a breathing obstruction.

Another procedure involves introducing radio frequencies to the soft palate in an effort to shrink tissue and reduce the obstruction. This is also an effective surgical means.

There are of course other options that you may want to discuss with your doctor.

Product Information

SnoreWizard Front view

SnoreWizard does not require you to “boil and bite”.

The SnoreWizard is made by a United Kingdom-based company and has spread across to Australia, South Africa, and into the United States. It was a man by the name of David Hawkes who invented the SnoreWizard in an effort to correct this own snoring problem. Fast Systems Limited; the company behind SnoreWizard sells a variety of innovative and high-quality products, including this one to consumers all around the world.

This device is considered a mandibular advancement device and like all others corrects snoring by pulling forward the lower jaw ultimately tightening throat muscles and clearing air passages. While this method of snoring prevention does not work for everyone, the developers of this product suggest a 92% success rate. This is a bold claim as several studies confirm that MAD’s are effective in 80% to 85% of cases.

It is constructed of a safe soft plastic material and is a one-size fits all solution that does not involve any type of drugs. The front of the unit features a breathing hole that accommodates just about any type of sleeper.

During the sales pitch, the manufacturer suggests that its product was tested by a “leading professor of respiratory medicine” who confirmed its effectiveness. Unfortunately, they provided no further information indicating exactly who the professor was and what methods were used in the testing process. The inability to back up such claims can be damaging to the devices credibility.

What’s different about it?

School of gold fish, one different In a market where so many manufacturers are competing to sell a stop snoring mouthpiece, one has to differentiate their product from all others. Often times, you will see companies who seemingly appear overnight all selling an identical boil and bite mouthguard with all sorts of exaggerated claims. Within a few months, these companies are replaced with a new wave of startups who repeat the same mistake as the others did.

Creating an innovative product is one step that so many forget to include in their business plan. Fast Systems Ltd. brought to market one of the first mouthguard devices that are ready to use out of the box. While a bit of trimming with a sharp pair of scissors may be necessary to achieve maximum comfort, no heating or boiling is necessary. Since many people have a difficult time fitting a boil and bite unit, having an oral appliance that bypasses this step gives this product an edge over several of its competitors.

In addition, this apparatus has breathing holes which are found in very few MAD’s. This is a necessary feature for those who tend to breathe through their mouth while sleeping. Also, allergy and cold suffers require a breathing solution while having blocked nasal passages. The SnoreWizard allows snorers to breathe freely in this case.

Cost and availability

Price tag under magnifying glass indicating price of SnoreWizard Having access to this snoring mouth guard is simple if you reside in the UK, Australia or South Africa. You can simply visit the manufactures website and purchase directly. However, in the United States, there are a handful of distributors who promote and sell this device. They can be found on eBay, Amazon, Google Shopping or similar online retailers.

The average cost (in USD) is $59.99 with shipping charges of $5.00. This is slightly higher than the average price of a similar unit but keep in mind this is a unique product that can not be found elsewhere.

User feedback and reviews

Three speech clouds reviewBeing an as seen on TV product, there is certainly no shortage of customers who are willing to provide feedback in the form of a review. Most reviews are positive in nature, assuring us that this gadget actually works. People have credited it with saving their marriage and having the best night sleep in a long time. There were even quite a few who have tried it as an alternative to Obstructive Sleep Apnea CPAP and have had moderate success.

As for negative feedback, some complained of a dry throat while others experienced excessive drooling. Others were unable to get over the initial discomfort that is commonly associated with just about every MAD on the market today. Aside from these complaints, the general conscientious is that it actually works.

Listed below are a few comments that were left by actual reviewers. (Source: Buzzillions)

“The snore wizard is great! I am not overweight but do snore quite heavily. Simple to use. Teeth/gums can be slightly sore the morning after. Soreness will cease after 15 – 20 minutes when you wake. ” -KB

“WELL, day 1, NO SNORING AT ALL! We both woke up in shock that it not only worked, but so well and immediately! I am SO happy I can’t even tell you!” -Jen

“Was to large and bulky for a female with an average sized mouth. Unable to shape it to fit. Need to offer sizes” -Anonymous

Buy or pass?

Street sign showing cost and benefitsThe SnoreWizard is a unique product that many have confirmed to be a viable solution to solve their snoring problem. While there are a few naysayers, the vast majority of people who have actually tried this device can agree that is in fact effective.

As for design, the creators nailed it with an innovative fitting process that does not involve dealing with scalding hot water or biting down to create a custom piece. Although they say that it works right out of the box, you may want to consider doing a little trimming with a sharp pair of scissors in order to get the best fit. In many cases, this is not even necessary.

I also prefer the breather hole design that is included in this piece yet left out of so many others. This is one necessary feature that I always look for while making a purchase decision. Quite a few people buy a mouthpiece without this feature are quickly become disappointed with the results as the piece is more likely to fall out while sleeping.

If you are in search of a no-hassle solution to fix your snoring problem, you will likely be satisfied with this products. It is constructed of a thinner than average material that makes it comfortable to wear, easy to use and affordable.

There are of course better options available that are in the same price range. For instance, the Zquiet costs the same yet offers several additional features in return. I own one of these and have recommended it to several of my friends and family members who have a snoring problem. My Zquiet review has more information on this device including an overview of my personal experience.

This product works right out of the package and does not require a complicated fitting process. The “living hinge” allows you to take a drink of water or even communicate with the device installed. I found it to be very comfortable and much less intrusive than larger mouthpieces such as the SnoreWizard.

What is the Snore Eliminator?

Snore Eliminator with package and travel case

The Snore Eliminator is a price leader – 2 for $47

The Snore Eliminator is a stop snoring mouthpiece that was designed to be effective and affordable. Sylvan Inc. based out of North Myrtle Beach South Carolina is the company behind this product. It is owned and operated by Entrepreneur Sylvan Newby. The actual device was designed by Dr. William Vachon, a Myrtle Beach oral surgeon who has been practicing for 15 years now.  The oral appliance was recently released into the market in October of 2011 and has since become a commonly discussed snoring solution across several blogs and message board.

The device itself is classified as a “therapeutic mouth guard used to prevent snoring” and is considered to be a mandibular advancement device. It works by positioning the lower jaw forward so that it slightly protrudes from its original position. As a result, internal muscles and fat are pulled forward, clearing the airway. This procedure for correcting snoring has been proven in clinical trials and used for over two decades now. An overwhelming majority of people who have used similar guards to prevent snoring have had success.

Sylvan Newby, inventor of Snore Eliminator

Sylvan Newby it the face behind Snore Eliminator

Like many others, it can be molded at home with the use of hot water using the following process:

  • Using your stove or microwave, heat a bowl of water to boiling temperatures. Remove from heat source and set aside.
  • Unwrap the Snore Eliminator and place the breather spacer in the front hole
  • Carefully submerge the entire device into the boiling water for a few seconds then remove
  • After a few seconds, ensure that it is no longer scalding hot by touching it to your skin.
  • Insert into the mouth and firmly bit down while pushing your cheeks in for several seconds. Meanwhile, continuously suck in to remove as much air from your mouth as possible.
  • Remove the entire device and place in a bowl of ice-cold water. It will help to prepare this water ahead of time.
  • Check to ensure that you have achieved the desired fit. If not, you may repeat the process a couple of time.

The secret behind the mouthguards ability to reshape itself is due to the material in which it is made from. While the manufacturer does not specify exactly what it uses to create its product, similar ones are created from a thermoplastic material the becomes pliable and shape-able once it reaches temperatures in excess of 170 degrees or so. Since the most effective way to reach a consistent temperature across the entire surface is to boil it, this is the technique that is widely used.

Perhaps one of the best features that this product offers is a breathing hole. Only a small number of devices are designed with this important feature that is a must for anyone who is not able to breathe through their nose.

The price

Price tag under magnifying glass The Snore Eliminator cost $37.00 and is currently being sold with free shipping. If you are in search of a better value, pick up the two pack for $47, which also ships for free. This is only $23.50 per device shipped to your doorstep.

Comments from actual reviewers

Thumbs up or thumbs down The Snore Eliminator is made using a simple design that is effective and affordable. Most who have tried it can agree that it stops snoring exactly as indicated by their sales pitch. The manufacturer claims a 93% rate of effectiveness. This seems to coincide with the reviews that are appearing on the internet.

There, however, some common side effects that this snoring device share with others. The most notable side effect is a sore mouth after using the product. Unfortunately, any time you introduce something new to your body it typically reacts in a negative fashion. Luckily, this symptom typically clears up after just a few days. In addition, you may have a difficult time keeping the Snore Eliminator in your mouth at night. If this is the case, try to remold it for a better fit.

Here is some feedback from customers who actually purchased the Snore Eliminator. (Source Amazon.com)

“Best thing on the market, my wife was at her wits end until i found this product. I was skeptical at first but right off the bat, it assisted with my sleep habits. My wife couldn’t be happier.” – Robby Rocks

“I am not satisfied. it has decreased the volume, but my husband snores as before. We tried to modify the shape many times, but the result is the same. I would not recommend to spend money on this product.” – Shilde

“Does it work? Yes! There are still lingering minor problems…one tends to drool a bit and a tiny snore here and there. However, the awful rattling that can be quite distressing is basically gone.” – Lesley Zychla

Should I buy the Snore Eliminator?

illustration of person pondering on top of question markIts a fact – this particular oral appliance delivers as promised. It was created by an oral surgeon and comes with a 100% money back guarantee. Overall, everything seems to check out okay.

The molding process is similar to several others and can be completed at home in less than 10 minutes. This makes it desirable if you are searching for something that can be used immediately as soon as you receive it in the mail.

Although relatively new to the market, the Snore Eliminator has already made a name for itself as an effective solution that prevents snoring. Many people have left positive feedback in reference to this product while few say it does not work.

The breather hole is a plus and is often left out by most manufacturers who offer a similar product. Their air hole ensures that you are able to breathe, even if your nose is stuffy. While this can be a positive feature, some find that it causes the back of your throat to dry out.

Perhaps the Snore Eliminators best feature is the price. When purchased individually, your cost is going to be similar to many others that are available. However, when you purchase the 2 pack for only $10 more, the cost drops to just under $24 per unit which means that it costs much less than many of its competitors.

While the Snore Eliminator may work and is inexpensive, I would not consider this a long-term solution for anyone who is interested in treating their snoring every night. A more appealing product is the Zquiet which does not have to be fitted and is much more compact in comparison to the Snore Eliminator. You can read my complete review to see why it’s better than most boil and bite mouthpieces. I’ve used the Zquiet and it is just as effective as the snore eliminator yet much thinner and compact. It allows you to breathe through your mouth, speak or even have a liquid refreshment before going to sleep.

The SleepPro custom is an upgrade to the original SleepPro, and offers all of the same features with the added bonus of having a 100% customized design. Aside from the Prosnore II, no other snoring relief product offers a lab produced oral appliance.

What is the SleepPro Custom?

A molded SleepPro Custom The SleepPro Custom is considered a MAD and is very similar to the oral appliances that you will find at your dentist office. The process used to create this device is identical to the process that your dentist would use yet it is sold at a fraction of the price. The truth is, in most cases fitting one does not require a doctors assistance. There are 5 simple steps used to create your own customized mouthpiece.

  1. SleepPro will send you an impression kit which consists of a couple trays and dental grade impression clay. Press the clay into the upper and lower tray.
  2. Carefully insert each tray into the mouth and bite down to create an impression into the clay.
  3. Open your mouth and remove the trays, being careful not to distort your new impressions.
  4. Send your mold to the lab in the provided container. From here your piece will be created using medical grade plastic resins
  5. Your new device will be mailed to you soon after it is produced.

Creating a custom fitted snoring device ensures a closer and more comfortable fit in comparison the popular boil and bite devices that are most commonly offered on the internet. This guard is constructed from thin plastics that hugs every valley and nook around your teeth. Being thin addresses the commonly cited complaint of being bulkiness.

MEDiTAS Ltd, the company behind this product is based out of the United Kingdom and has been in the medical supply business for over two decades now. They produced the original SleepPro in 1998 and more recently offered the custom edition.

Standard vs. Custom – what’s different

SleepPro Easifit vs SleepPro Custom While both the Original and Custom devices are highly effective, there is a few notable difference that you should consider:

  • The original is a one size fits all device that is formed by using hot water and pressure from your teeth. This process is often referred to as boil and bite. The custom is created in a laboratory using an exact replica of your teeth.
  • With the custom, you are getting a closer fitting unit that is thin and closely follows the contour of your teeth. A thinner and closer fit means less bulk in your mouth. Generally speaking, this makes it much more comfortable to wear at night.
  • If concealing your anti-snoring device is important to you, the custom does a better job. The standard is clear and blue in color while the custom is completely clear.
  • The custom cost nearly 4 times as much as the original.

How much will it cost?

Sack of money with dollar sign printed on it While going with a custom fitted piece is typically the best choice, it is important to weigh in on the cost to ensure that it fits into your budget.  A professionally fitted piece can cost several thousand dollars and will likely be very effective. The ultimate question is how much are you willing and able to spend?

The SleepPro Custom costs $199.99 plus an additional $8.25 for shipping while the average cost of a B&B device is somewhere around $50 including shipping. However, if you have purchased the original series in the last 6 months you are eligible to receive a 20% discount if you purchase the custom.

Two-hundred dollars is the average price of a device that uses a similar fitting process.

Customer reviews

Illustration of three people conversing This particular device has generally been well received by those who have tried it. Those who have tried it rave about how comfortable it is compared to other devices. The level of comfort far exceeds most boil and bite devices that are available. Some have commented that the custom version does not make your mouth feel full of plastic like other snoring mouth guards do.

A few found that the return time on the finished product takes a few weeks while others receive their unit rather quickly after sending off their impression. If you are in need of immediate results then you may want to keep this in mind. The finished product should work on the first night although it may take a couple weeks to arrive in the mail.

Here are a few reviews from actual customers who have tried the sleeppro custom:

“I am delighted with the SleepPro 2. I wake up much less uncomfortable than I have ever done with either of the boil-and-bite alternatives I have tried. I have found that it stays in place all night without exception and I really like the ‘hole’ in the front that allows for breathing through the mouth – making it suitable even when I’ve been congested with a cold. ” – Hemma Procter (Source: sleeppro.com)

“Hi – i posted some time ago re snoring affecting relationship. We have bought a SLEEP PRO S2 Custom made mouth peice for my snoring dh- it ( fingers crossed- dont want jinx myself!!}stopped the snoring from first night and nothing heard since. – Linconlass (Source: Mumsnet)

Our expert recommendation

Check PlusThe SleepPro custom is a unique custom-fitted device that offers a lab molded design which is only available from a handful of manufacturers. The molding process creates an exact replica of your teeth, providing a level of comfort unsurpassed by several other MAD’s that are currently available on the market.

When deciding which OTC stop snoring device may work for you, many people factor in the price of the product while making their decision. Compared to the available alternatives, this price of the SP custom is quite a bit higher. However, when compared to similar lab formed units, the overall cost is right in line.

My recommendation: if you have tried other boil and bite devices and have found them to be uncomfortable, you may find the custom line to be closer fitting and more comfortable. Most who purchase this particular product are interested in a professionally fitted unit without paying the price of a professional to fit it. This can be an excellent alternative to a more costly solution. On the other hand, $200+ is quite expensive and there are lots of great alternatives out there for 1/2 the price.

If you are unsure about the steep price tag and would like a product that works well I would suggest the Good Morning Snore Solution. You can read all about it here. The GMSS is about 1/2 the price of the SleepPro custom and works just as well. Unlike the SleepPro or any other Mandibular Advancement Device, the GMSS works by attaching to the end of your tongue and holding it forward while you sleep. I’ve tried this device and was rather impressed with the results. It stopped my snoring and unlike most traditional oral appliance, it barely takes up any room in the mouth.
